The Rocketeer is a totally underrated comic book movie. Easily my favourite comic book movie. First Avenger is where I started with the MCU, and it became clear that it was really gaining momentum
The Captain America movies were my favorite MCU movies and the most consistently grounded, well written, and well directed series of movies in the bunch.
Phillips said it himself: "I asked for an army, and all I got was you. You are not enough." He was disparaging Steve, but in his own way he did have a point. Even with the serum, the odds of Steve beating Schmidt alone were very slim. That's why he needed help from Bucky, Peggy, Phillips, and the Howling Commandos.
Tony's GRANDfather? Selling Ammo? the movie literally explains why Steve ends up a Bonds Sales Gimmick in neon letters. Did this guy actually watch the damn film? If you can't get those basic details right, I have to guess, no.
I love this movie. It was great in 2011, and its still great now. The cast was amazing, from Chris Evans to Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell and Dominic Cooper. Tommy Lee Jones was great as Colonel Phillips, and Stanley Tucci was also memorable as Abraham Erskine, even though his scenes were limited. There were some great supporting characters too, like Bucky Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, and Arnim Zola. I loved the fights between Cap and the Red Skull, and was truly disappointed when Hugo didn't return for the Avengers sequels. But overall, it remains a highly entertaining film, and I give it a 9/10.
A great origin story that beautifully captures Steve's innocent heroism and like someone here wrote adorable "lack of cynicism". It will stand the test of time and even be one of the few MCU movies worth remembering in a few decades. And his character culminates in "Endgame" when he stands alone against an impossible force and just straps his shield tighter ready to engage. One of the greatest scenes ever. 👍
They get a couple of things wrong here. Howard Stark is not Tony's grandfather, he's his father. And the question of why don't the military use Cap other than putting him on stage is addressed in the movie when Tommy Lee Jones states that he was promised an army, and all he got was one soldier. Cap became to valuable to risk as he is the only source of the Super Soldier Formula.
I was never a big Cap fan as a kid, but this was undoubtedly my favorite Avengers origin movie. I just loved the WW2-era setting. If I could change anything about the film, I would make it 30 minutes longer, as the third act seemed a bit rushed. Could've used more Cap vs. Red Skull. I actually liked this more than Winter Soldier.
I thought the Red Skull was one of the best and most grounded villains. Also, in the movie he wasn't a Nazi. It was pointed out that he was an ex SS officer who wanted to created his own retro futuristic army in order to take on both the Allies AND the Nazis. I also liked the WWII setting. Being someone who watched loads of WWII movies as a kid, it came across as a WWII movie with a superhero, one where they went as far as including real life Nazi experimental weapons like the Triebflügel VTOL interceptor and the giant Landkreuzer super tank. Quite genius, connecting these drawing board experimental weapons with Red Skull and Hydra.
Yes it 100% stands the test of time Infact it's far better them most of the mcu as it does not rely on cheesy jokes and crappy one liners that make you cringe I love this film!!!
It's been a while since I've watched this one, but I remember just liking it at the time. The performance from Chris Evans was believable, the action was fast-paced, I just thought that Marvel was in a hurry to get all the Avengers their own standalone films, that they didn't have enough time to put down a solid story. I still enjoy the movie and the character
Great video. They had 2 choices when deciding to make this movie. 1. “Real” World War 2 Superhero movie OR 2. Fantasy World War 2 Superhero movie. They went with number 2. But for the sequels they went way harder
I absolutely love CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Sure, it has some dull parts to it. But overall, it's a great movie. In this fan's opinion, Joe Johnston was the prime choice to direct. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER has the same feel as another movie he directed - THE ROCKETEER, another Disney movie from the 1990s.
I HATED captain America before this move. Chris did an amazing job with the character and made me love C.A, and in a weird way, gave me a sense of pride in my poor country.
Captain America was very much of his time & created for WW2. An iconic comic book cover is Cap punching H@tler. I was surprised they chose this character for the MCU since he would seem so dated to modern audiences but was equally pleasantly surprised how well they integrated him into the present. A man out of his time. Sure, it's been done before in scifi shows like Buck Rogers but it worked & he bacame a good character who juxtaposed Tony Stark. The earnest Boyscout to Stark's snarky cynicism which would later divide The Avengers. I enjoyed Cap's debut film.
I remember review were mixed but favored. I really liked it and loved that they got Joe Johnston who directed The Rocketeer. The only thing I ddin't like was the Hydra Soldiers using energy weapons which they should have stuck to machine guns. I understand they used the tesseract to make the weapons but it just felt out of place.
Not only does it "stand the test of time"... the entire 1st generation of Marvel films were made with such care that I find them to be vastly superior to the films that followed. I could understand someone pointing out flaws in the CGI in certain places... and how that has improved over time... but in general they are fantastic. The first Thor is my favorite MCU film
I'd pick any Phase 1 film over the garbage they are regurgitating at us ever since Endgame. And yes, that includes the highly underrated Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2
the 2nd and 3rd movies of this trilogy are arguably the two best in the MCU franchise history, so this one naturally has trouble competing with that...if I'm honest this is my least favorite of MCU phase 1 movies. Thor 1 is the most underrated of that group.
Why is a person that’s not a fan of the character giving his thoughts about how well the film holds up now? Why am I supposed to care about what you think? The film is a great character study that remains true to the character in the comics. Watching this film, I felt the studio respected the source material and was not afraid to embrace it, flaws and all. Bad opinion piece. 🤮
Compared to just about everything post-Endgame, this movie absolutely holds up. I'd watch this 100 times in a row before watching The Eternals or She-Hulk once.
Is this video deliberately obtuse? Or did the author(s) not actually watch the film? 1. The “uncanny valley” concerning pre-serum Steve Rogers is highly subjective but still manages to sound more like cynicism than legitimate criticism. 2. The claim that the movie doesn’t “get going” until after Rogers is transformed ignores the essential context it constructs, as well the entire excellent performance of Stanley Tucci. 3. The disbelief and confusion expressed around using Captain America as a propaganda tool instead of using him for combat, which was clearly explained in the movie 4. The implication that you can only really “make a difference” in war by fighting in it, and 5. Describing Howard Stark as Tony Stark’s “grandfather” when he’s actually Tony’s father. p.s. Some smaller negative points: 1. starting a sequence describing the conclusion of the film with footage from the middle of it 2. Saying “finally having his final battle” which is pure lousy, lazy writing.
Holy crap…Howard Stark is his father…you clearly know nothing about this character…you should not be reviewing it and embarrassing yourself. Stick to X-Men
I never cared for this movie. I know people love it, but it seemed very paint by numbers and very predictable to me. I loved winter soldier, and it may be my favourite mcu movie.
Actually, Disney bought Marvel in 2009. This movie started filming in June of 2010, about six months after the sale. It was distributed by Paramount, but that was due to a legal contract Marvel had made with them, which would not expire until after the first Avengers film was released in 2012.
Howard was Tony's father, not his grandfather. As for Red Skull, he needed more scenes to be vicious. I enjoy it.
He's just old enough to be his grandfather. Had Tony at age 50+
How could Joblo make such a mistake???
Lack of proof reading @okidokicreations1075
One day I’ll watch a JoBlo video without some glaring error in it that makes me wonder who they have working there. But it is not this day
You can see how Joe Johnston's Rocketeer influence the style and tone of Captain America. Hugo Weaving was awesome as Red Skull.
This is quite an overlooked entry in the MCU. Joe Johnston made the Marvel version of "The Rocketeer" and it's a really solid origin story.
The Rocketeer is a totally underrated comic book movie. Easily my favourite comic book movie. First Avenger is where I started with the MCU, and it became clear that it was really gaining momentum
1 of the more underrated MCU movies
TRULY.
still one of the best origin stories ever made, yes rivals up with there with Batman Begins!
The Captain America movies were my favorite MCU movies and the most consistently grounded, well written, and well directed series of movies in the bunch.
I think the main reason they didn’t have Steve immediately go into battle is because all of the serum was destroyed and he was the only backup
No shit
Tony's GRANDfather?
Selling Ammo?
the movie literally explains why Steve ends up a Bonds Sales Gimmick in neon letters.
Did this guy actually watch the damn film? If you can't get those basic details right, I have to guess, no.
Calm down bro, he just made a simple mistake 💀💀💀
I love this movie. It was great in 2011, and its still great now. The cast was amazing, from Chris Evans to Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell and Dominic Cooper. He must have been taking a leak during the assassin destroying the super solder goo and running
I was never a big Cap fan as a kid, but this was undoubtedly my favorite Avengers origin movie. I just loved the WW2-era setting. If I could change anything about the film, I would make it 30 minutes longer, as the third act seemed a bit rushed. Could've used more Cap vs. Red Skull. One of my fav marvel movies! and the tone reminded me of indaina jones and the rocketeer!👍👍
Captain America Winter Soldier is my favourite film of this character, its just a great action film that can stand on it's own outside of the MCU!!
💯
Captain America the First Avenger is one of my favorite of the MCU universe.
I always watch the MCU film's in March. From the 1st of March till the 31st, I watch one a day.
I love this movie. It's done right. The music, the colours, the costumes.
Plus Hayley Atwell in THAT red dress! 🤩
still my favorite and most watched MCU movie.
Captain America: The First Avenger is literally one of the only MCU films I like.
Winter Soldier? I think its arguably the best MCU film
Loved the movie. Skinny Steve at the end had me in tears. Adored it for its lack of cynicism, like Donner's Superman.
As a kid, I remember reading the Captain America comics. I hated the tv show but thourghly enjoyed this movie
I surely liked this movie all from the start. Always watch it when on TV even..
Yes it 100% stands the test of time Infact it's far better them most of the mcu as it does not rely on cheesy jokes and crappy one liners that make you cringe I love this film!!!

I could watch it all day ! I love the caracter, I love the movie. And Chris Evans is perfect in it !
I ADORED this movie…and still love it….and it brought the best writers (Chris Markus and Steven McFeeley) into the MCU!
Great video.
They had 2 choices when deciding to make this movie.
1. “Real” World War 2 Superhero movie
OR
2. Fantasy World War 2 Superhero movie.
They went with number 2.
But for the sequels they went way harder
I love the dieselpunk genre
It's so unique and underused
Yes 👍
Its an awesome movie 😎
Saw this in theaters with my wife and kids 🎉
Great standalone movie doesn't get enough credit, Chris Evans was perfect as Captian America Hugh Weaving fantastic as the Red Skull
It's a great movie, watched it a few days ago... It's simple and efficient
I think its probably really underrated and fun when you watch the state of mcu today
Captain America was very much of his time & created for WW2. An iconic comic book cover is Cap punching H@tler. It’s one of my favorites.
The movie that started CGI “xplosions,” TV lighting, and making movies look like TV specials.
We covered this recently on the podcast Desert of the Reel: A Movie Podcast.
What is that song you have playing at the end of the vid? I really like it!
This movie is better than anything MCU has done in 5 years by a long way.
This is my favorite MCU movie. It's a shame the narrator didn't get it.
I would have perhaps given this episode to someone with an affinity for the Captian America comics
Red Skull is not the most substantial MCU baddies but Hugo Weaving is in full movie star baddie mode.
It was mentioned they used Cap as an entertainer to explain the costume and his hero name.
It's hard to love this movie knowing how much greater Winter Soldier would be.
I'd pick any Phase 1 film over the garbage they are regurgitating at us ever since Endgame. And yes, that includes the highly underrated Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2
Interesting... 🤔
Constantine is awesome
I give this shit a solid 4.56/10.
I still blame AVI ARAD for the failure of the 2005s FANTASTIC FOUR
1:36 I feel like somebody's already said the same exact thing in another video before using the same clips
the 2nd and 3rd movies of this trilogy are arguably the two best in the MCU franchise history, so this one naturally has trouble competing with that...if I'm honest this is my least favorite of MCU phase 1 movies. Thor 1 is the most underrated of that group.
yes
Yes. Only word necessary.
Why is a person that’s not a fan of the character giving his thoughts about how well the film holds up now? Why am I supposed to care about what you think? Yeah this guy stinks in general
I liked the movie more than you did and I thought the red skull was a great adversary.
Compared to just about everything post-Endgame, this movie absolutely holds up. I'd watch this 100 times in a row before watching The Eternals or She-Hulk once.
Now i can see what's wrong with small steve rogers, the face was too big.
No sadly. I liked it the first time i watched it and ive watched it twice since then and it got cornier and cornier.
Howard was Tony's father, not his grandfather
It probably has aged even better without all of the terrible quips, CGI and THE MESSAGE in most MCU content now.
It’s okay to be wrong sometimes
The movie is just ok (a 5/10). The first half is good, but the second half is bad. The Winter Soldier and Civil War are MUCH better movies.
The tone isn't the same all across the board nope
It just lacked decent action scenes
Guys, next time you break down a movie: watch the movie first so you’ll have your facts straight.
I dont agree with you on with sooooo many things.
3rd like!
🥱🥱 And so ?...
@@alancrisp1582 sheesh. buzzkill. It's my lucky number bro!
The movie is great fun fun. The review is kind of bland.

The movie is 10x better than this review
This guy thinks Tony Stark's grandfather is in the film😂 please don't take this review seriously if he can't identify the characters or do basic math.
Now Cap is a woman. SMDH
Holy crap…Howard Stark is his father…you clearly know nothing about this character…you should not be reviewing it and embarrassing yourself. Stick to X-Men
The Batman sucked ass
They should have stopped after Endgame.
I never cared for this movie. I know people love it, but it seemed very paint by numbers and very predictable to me. I loved winter soldier, and it may be my favourite mcu movie.
Do Americans still see patriotism positively? It feels like they don't 😢
The MCU was better without Disney

You should’ve Ford Focused the deck
