      Hi guys, can you tell me if the alternator / voltage should ever be reading same when idling or driving the car as it is with engine off? I have noticed sometimes when I'm driving the voltage only goes up to 13.6 to 14.5 when I ease off the accelerator and am coasting in gear or braking. Is this "normal" for an E91? Sometimes it kicks in at 14.5 to 14.7 immediately at idling when parked and stays like that the whole drive.... Is this just normal maintenance of the battery by a functioning alternator system, or is there a problem with the alternator? Also FYI I know the serpentine belt needs changed and am about to have that done as the belt is cracking now that it's done 210k miles 🙂 Just wondering if the belt being old and at least one pulley squealing would also contribute to the voltage being patchy like it is occasionally from the alternator?

    Thanks BMW, this is so much easier than having a voltage gauge in the car or coolant temp gauge.

    I’m in the US and my vehicle had one letter and the rest numbers. It didn’t work at first. What I did was only count the last 5 numbers and didn’t include the one right after the letter. 👍🏾

    My voltage reads around 11.6v using this method. Thanks for the info. You also have a video on alternator diodes. Can the diodes be replaced separately or does the whole alternator have to go? Any alternator brand replacement suggestion?

    • @Explore-Gobal
      @Explore-Gobal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Upon further troubleshooting it turned out that the bolt to the serpentine belt tensioner partially sheered off, which cause the belt to slip and the alternator to stop charging. Nothing wrong with the Alt after all. I think the tensioner was a little over $20 and the repair was a piece of cake.

      When the car is running you should see around 13-14v, if you're consistently under that I would check the alternator.

    • @antoniop1968
      @antoniop1968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good battery will sit at a steady 12v when charged. If your getting anything under that, your car is draining your battery. I'm getting 13.9 - 14.3 when I'm driving, I also know I need a new alternator, so I'm inclined to believe we need more.

    • @antoniop1968

      I've also compared the readout to a multimeter at the battery and they are the same.

    REMEMBER - Just add UP the LAST 5 Digits. My car showed the letter A followed by 6 digits which added up to 33. 33 did not work, however when I added up the last 5 digits I got a different number 24 which when entered worked perfectly.
    My voltage is reading 11.4 and wont to 11.0 when the AC was on. Hmn...

    In my Chevy there are gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, water temperature, and voltage. I don't have to pump codes and solve equations to get basic necessary system information. F*&king German Engineering. I also own an E90 btw. I came here wondering how to access basic troubleshooting information. FFS what a joke.
