Great video, but I really wish you would have shown a color managed version of the footage...I am sure your LUT is really cool, but one of the coolest things about this, is they didn't just add log, they added Log that is supported in editors, namely Davinci resolve. I just think that this highlights the difference between like Filmic Pro's fake log, and actually native log that actually adheres to some standard like ACES, etc Oh, also, the LUT might be super useful if you use BlackMagic Camera iOS app (which gives you false color, zebras, HDMI clean feed, and basically every other feature a BlackMagic camera would give you in their UI), which allows you to add a preview LUT, and also you can use ProRes 422 LT to save a little space. BlackMagic Camera is free...you can also just put BMC on the action button...
The Cinema P3 app has been offering 3 different Prores Log profiles for a couple of years on the iPhone 13 & 14, and also lets you film in Prores Proxy, LT, regular and HQ. Amazing app.
Pseudo log as Cinema P3 does not have access to the RAW video, just the DolbyVision or Rec709 version Apple will give them. So with a decent LUT Cinema P3 converts one of those back to log. The DolbyVision version does have a lot of information so the right LUT could do a decent job. But contrast and sharpening will still be way too high in the file. I've been experimenting with the alternative apps ProCamera (the German one with three stripes), Blackmagic Camera, FilmicPro and the native camera app on an iPhone 14 Pro. It's awfully hard to get files out of an iPhone which don't look crunchy and overly colourful. These files grade very poorly in DaVinci Resolve. Results are better in FCPX. Log without the extra sharpening and contrast is a big deal. If anyone does have a workflow/app to get high quality gradeable video out of an iPhone 14 Pro, please let me know.
12:35 you would be correct except… black magic released their camera app for free and you can set the action button to open that app directly. So you can literally access it with the touch of a button and have all the controls you would have on a regular black magic camera, with the obvious exception of aperture which is fixed. this app really couldn’t have come at a better time, also, get some Samsung 256gb thumb drives, they are fast and cost like 25 bucks. Much more practical than sticking a t5 on the back of your phone with a USB’s cable dangling around.
One last step is to adjust shutter speed with a ND filter. Because the aperture is fixed, shutter goes too high to adjust exposure and that increases also the sharpness of the footage.
I can't wait till the "how to record" in ProRes video. I might add that I feel that best additions are VND & Mist filters! Lastly, I'd like to see your recommendations for video apps.* Matt - the BlackMagic Cam app is really great - plus it has zebras and it's free.

Recording to external is not new. You could do it with 3rd part apps. I can do it with my iPhone 11 and black manic app. However there is a big problem … the lightening port is not fast enough for 4k60p. Other smaller files can work tho. So the new 15 pro series (must be pro) has usb-3 speeds that can keep up w it. H264 4k60p is about 100 mbps or about 13 MB per second. The SD card reader I have for iPhone 11 can only write about 8 MB / sec at best. What I do is I can just record to internal storage up to 4k60 and wireless copy to my PC to edit using AirDiskPro which will copy at about 35 mb per second over WiFi, faster than using an SD card adapter.
The reason they want you to use external is 30 min of ProRes 422 is 256gb of storage. It would fill your phone in that time. Then you’d have to transfer it off each time. That’s crazy. This way you can get 2 TB SSD for cheap and record 4 hours per SSD at that size and swap them out as you go. Yeah usb c 3.0 (not 3.1 or 3.2) + 20w charging... On top of that the prores log isnt there yet. What people forget is the iPhone's sensor size. Wont be surprise if they add a micro sd slot then call it the latest and greatest again... If you really want film features I'd recommend the xperia 1V. 1 inch sensor + s cinetone 😀
Can’t wait for next year’s video, when Matt says “remember what I said last year? Well, forget all that!” Don’t know why Apple wants to court Pro’s ….they gave up on them when FCPX came out.
As great as smartphone cameras are coming along now, I still wouldn't use them to record events, weddings or films. The lack of sharpness, DOF, dynamic range and video quality is what keeps me away. Only reason to use iphone and galaxy is to capture candid moments. Capturing these candid moments allows me use the footage for documentary or wedding videos that adds that past look. And besides, would you really spend $1,400 usd on a smartphone just to record videos?
This familiar (naysaying) rhetoric is beyond old at this point Harry...it's almost as if you're trying to convince and placate yourself, with your own comment. You'll long be aware that we've had feature films made with iPhones and that was back on the iPhone 7. This current generation is more than capable of handling films, events and weddings...'the lack of sharpness' comment was particularly laughable, especially when the iPhone is notorious for being overly 'sharp' and often needs softening with filters / external lenses, etc. It's okay Harry, we're not trying to replace your Sony a7IV!...you can relax...and recognise the real and tangible capabilities of these current phones...and do remember that 'real' cameras have flaws and limitations too.
@@reliableandrew Okay want to prove your points? Let's make a bet. Whoever films a wedding better will have to pay for the wedding plus the other person's expenses. Don’t give you excuses? Lol…I’ll let you calm down fella…2 deep breaths should do it. I’m not a film-maker (yet) Harry!…I’m merely a teacher of Computer Science with an opinion. In any case, film-making for me would first and foremost be about the STORY itself, with, composition, framing, lighting and equipment only in service to the story. ‘Better’ will ALWAYS be subjective to the eye of the beholder, fella…and when inward validation is secure, external validation isn’t necessary (in the form of any ‘bet’) so I have nothing to ‘prove’. This is all well and good and really fantastic review covering this, but and this is a big but: the lenses are full frame equivalents of 13mm f/10, 24mm f/6.3 and 77mm f/24 (120mm f/21 on the max)! I mean.... when was the last time you needed to film something and you reached for an f/24 lens? or really that strange 120mm focal length? or the strange 13mm focal length, especially at f/10? - Plus 24mm is a bit tricker and more distorting than the 26mm they used to have in older models. I would go as far as to say video from the 13 and 77/120 is unusable in almost all cases, so you are just stuck with 24mm, but at f/6.3? - I don't know how often I could use that in practice...
Almost all raw video is compressed - blackmagic, prores raw, red raw, etc. There is no reason in the world that Apple cannot implement ProRes Raw in a future update. The data ratee and footprint is actually lower than standard ProRes, so I would politely disagree that we won't be seeing it sooner than you think.

That's why the app has LUT support, so you can see how the image looks with the desired color grading already during the recording.
@@whoismatt I'm seeing issues currently with the hdmi clean feed not working on the iPhone 15 Pro in the blackmagic camera app. Filmic Pro works just fine, but not the blackmagic camera app. Seems as though they need to fix this in a future update.
Gr8. What ssd size you bought in iphone 15 pro. 256, 512 or 1tb?
would definitely buy luts . I need them ..waiting 15 pro shooting today.
Hello Brother, I would like buy an iPhone 15 pro for filmmaking (videography). How many hours can i expect battery life in the iPhone 15 pro. Can you please reply for this comment soon...?
But are the file sizes better compared to Sony's Slog3 10bit 4:2:2 XAVC H or HS with a normal SD Card (not a CFExpess Type A card) ?? Like I really wanna know, Apple says 1 min of ProRes Log is around 6 GB so I am curious since I don't have a mirrorless yet. How would this 1 min footage compare to 1 min of Slog3 or S-cinetone?
With the BM app you can record internal 4K 60fps in ProRes or H265
Verdict on Black Magic Camera ?
Hi Matt. I loaded some videos onto an iPhone 15 Pro Max from a micro SD card to try to edit some footage from a go pro hero 9 black. Video was shot at 30 fps in 1080p but vn or cap it won't recognize any video on board. Do you have a fix?
Can you make a video of how to use sony slog3 hdr? / hdr workflow
Hey Matt
is there a difference between the sound quality on video recording between iphone 15 and iphone 15 pro?
i was thinking that there might be a difference between their microphone
I haven’t heard of there being a difference
_Yes, but what can you tell me about Zack Snyder’s project of a short film using the iPhone 7 Plus?_
I'm thinking of getting one of these for high quality vertical video.
How can you have a patent on RAW video??
can the iphone 15 plus shot in log?
Can’t wait for next year’s video, when Matt says “remember what I said last year? Well, forget all that!” Don’t know why Apple wants to court Pro’s ….they gave up on them when FCPX came out.
Have you tried the new Blackmagic camera app?!
@whoismatt Is Iphone 15 Pro Max good enough to replace the Sony a7 IV for travel vlogging and night photos?
You can only use an iphone to record your footages. Nothing else such as external lenses or ND filters. Just use your iphone. While me on the other hand will use all my cinema cameras. I'm challenging you right now to filming. Don't give me excuses and come up with a bunch of bias reasons. Let's go right now! I'll be waiting. Got a contract and everything for you.
@@harryvuemedia
Hiya Harry...will try to be civil here, but who are you exactly, to issue such an (infantile) ‘challenge’, or ‘bet’…much less to set the terms of said ‘challenge’, simply over a difference of opinion? You’re kinda making me laugh here, especially the part about having your contract ready! Did my little itty bitty comment trigger you into having some sort of ‘battle’ THAT much?
It does sound as if your livelihood depends on your camera, if so, I wish you and your family the best.
P.S. Nice shots with Lizzie.
@@reliableandrew Didn't bother to read your post since you don't give me an answer at the beginning, so have some cheese with your wine. I'll bring over sea salt as well. Have a nice day! :)

Great! I'm glad you 'didn't bother'. Equilibrium is restored!...and it's one less disgruntled individual in denial that I have to respond to! Toodles.
can anyone explain the flickering at 01:25?
The wind moving the tree shadows?
With BlackMagic Camera Apps you can film 60fps 4k ProRess Log
Can you make a iphone 15 reg vs pro video comparison please?
With the new shortcut button you can launch any other camera app seamlessly
Please comment on quality of video while zooming far distance ,does the pixel collapse ?
You can see an example when I zoom in to 15x with the 5x zoom camera
Thanks for the video, new sub. As a newbee in video recording I use the iP 13 PM, would you recommend upgrading to the 15 PM? I'm not at your level yet, and primarily record walking around cities site seeing so nothing fancy. I use the regular camera, no prores and use either 20 or 60 fps.
Can record EVERY video to external storage or only High Res ? Great video by the way thanks !
Only high res mate😢
It's getting cooler and cooler with this iPhone, well, it's probably for advanced photographers and cameramen , it's like a universal camera
Yes, tell us about the patent battle between Apple and Red! 😀 Great video BTW!!
Share pls some LOG video samples with original files.
Yes waiting for the video with complete tuto for log shoot along with focus control, bokeh in video, cinematic
Great clip! Have you done the video about Apple versus Red?
Not yet I need to
Matt..Thank you for all your videos !!
Apple lost to Red so sad but that's what patents are for but I sure would like to see a video on it. Thank you in advance. I'm a proud and happy Iphone 15 ProMax 1 Terabyte owner & amateur film developer. Thanks again!
All of the biggest upgrades are on the video side for iPhone 15. I think they have pretty much taken it as far as it can go on the photo side which is unfortunate. I am starting to shoot more video though, so this is cool.
Also- 422 color space should help a lot with green screen work. Not just grading. The color channel is twice the data and resolution from 420.
Does it matter if it’s the Max or the regular Pro? @Matt
Nope!
Awesome content dude
THanks for the detailed video.
Wow very informative thanks matty 😊👍
