Coverdale is bass baritone . Not glenn . And Coverdale tore up for years on tour , Glenn didnt that much in 80s and sang others than metal screaming . David is never in head voice .

Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin were the two most versatile members of Deep Purple: they painted from a broad pallette and to have to play Smoke On The Water was like dumbing down, especially for Tommy, who had recorded with Cobham and Mouzon and was a solo artist in his own right. Drugs didn't help of course, but they were restless, and Glenn's album Play Me Out and Tommy's Private Eyes are proof of this. They didn't like hard rock.

Hardly no singer from this era keeps standing strong in mid range (they all go low or high to avoid) - Glenn does it flawlessly, as always.
