Dawn! Best quote ever! "One impulse buy and all of your savings has gone out the window." So SO good. I've actually never thought of that in those terms. Thank you so much for the reminder. It's one of my errands today and I'm bringing you with me. You're going to sit on my shoulder whispering that phrase over and over.
If you are on the fence about buying the decluttering course I can PROMISE YOU you will make your money back in the things you WONT buy in 2024 because of how much you have learned from the course! I bet I have saved myself at least $1,000 or more of not buying things I would have normally bought just from tips, tricks and decluttering from the course. I would buy it again in a heart beat! 20/10 recommend! ♥️🙌🏻
I second this. You will be so glad you signed up for Take Your House Back! I consider myself a lifetime member now. Will always renew as decluttering is never done and the TYHB community is extremely supportive!
@ellie448 Yes. Your home will be a chaotic mess if you took her advice and shopped for a hoard of clutter from her sponsors: Dollar Tree, Costco, etc.🤣😂👏🤑
We go to Costco at the beginning of every month (even driving 80 mins one way!). They have so many organic choices that we cannot get otherwise. So we say yes Costco is definitely worth it. For sure there are times for browsing, but if you know what you're there for then you can go in and get your staples and get out.
Dutchie here, living in the land of the Stroopwafels I really had a good laugh seeing you buy them as a specialty. The dutch way to pronounce the 'roop' part is like 'rope' not like the oo in 'roof' But luckily it doesn't matter how you pronounce their name, they will taste good anyway!
It looks like a nice outing with the boys. They are growing up and behave so well. When my husband and I go to Costco we always have the $1.50 hotdog and drink and call it a date.
Except that he took the car down when told not to-not a huge deal, but in my house that wouldn't be considered behaving SO well either, which might be why she didn't. Lol.
@angelaromolo6517 that is great. We all have different expectations. As a mother and a teacher as well, I think they behaved fine (not "amazingly"), as I already said.
Just so happened that I'm decluttering Christmas decorations and getting real about the 'just in case we want to make a ....fill in the blank'. It's gotta go and hopefully someone shopping at the thrift shop this year will love all the lights, ornaments, and stuff for crafting! Thanks for keeping me company Dawn!
Your kids did so well in there 😀 I loved the hot chocolate tins - they would be great teacher presents like you said. Though in my granddaughters school (I’m in the UK) the parents all donate a small amount of money and the teacher is given a gift voucher. I think it works really well because the teacher can get something lovely that they need (or want) ❤
That's a great idea for the teacher. My sister-in-law used to be a teacher and while she appreciated the sentiment from her students, she said you only need so many things with an apple theme, Avon perfume, etc... I think that is a much better way to do it and they can get something they need and will actually use.
As a teacher I can say we don’t expect any gifts from pupils, especially in these difficult Financial Times. I do know there are some people who do want to get us gifts and the best ones I have received are vouchers people have joined together to get, stationery for in class or a great present I received one year was every kid in the class gave me a flower so I ended up with a beautiful bouquet. Such a special, low cost, idea.😊
I shop Costco almost exclusively. We stick to our list. And stay to the outside aisles of the store. I don’t do the impulse buys. Learned by experience. I’ve found that their appliances, big and small, are the kind of off models and don’t work out well in the long run. So I skip them for sure. Produce is a great buy. With a freeze dryer, what we can’t use up quickly never goes to waste. I enjoyed your shopping trip. I never look at the toys or seasonal things so I’m glad you did and I could just watch over your shoulder! Thanks!
I just watched a 1949 Christmas movie that I see with new eyes after decluttering-it was basically normalizing way too much shopping, aquiring, gift amounts, and excessive holiday decorating that would require so much space to store all year! It helped promote the mindset and expectations that helped lead to the overabundance accumulating in so many homes as clutter that actually gets in the way of peace, daily activities, and relationships instead of enhancing life. I am so much more careful about buying anything now, which is the other part of a home staying clean and simplified. Gifts are generally consumable unless clearly a needed and wanted item! Dawn is a great teacher!
Not sure if your are in the US, but US society is *very* much geared to capitalism and consumerism. It is truly ingrained as you observed in the movie. The question is why.
I love what you said about the Raold Dahl books! He wrote James & the Giant Peach, Charlie & the Chocolate Fact, and one of the James Bond movies. Married to actress Patricia O’Neal. Super old school. Fun trek with you and the boys for some Holiday Costco.
Dawn, I hosted Thanksgiving this year and got so many compliments on my home and decor. All thanks to your decluttering tips and challenges!! I love my home now, too. Thank you!!!
Omg those peppermint pretzel crisps are the best thing ever! We stupidly bought them three weeks ago to try and now my husband has eaten three bags in three weeks 😂
Costco has excellent prices on winter coats this year. I got two coats for less than what I would pay for one anywhere else. Great place to stock up for a coat drive!
SO many good lessons in this video for your boys on this shopping trip. It was a realistic; to see just how easy, even as minimalists, we can all be swayed by the sales and stock in stores especially this time of year. Easy to bird walk away from our shopping list. I don't shop at Costco, but I liked how you shared with the boys the price comparison, restraint, think time, and how you modeled noticing things you didn't buy so the boys could see that you also had a wish list, and the step through and conversation while window shopping is priceless. Something I always did with my daughter. It's gives value to have that wish list both for you to know their interest for intentional giving as well as the boys to have something to look forward to receiving on their list.
So fun to see you get the stroopwafels. I love them too and they originate from a town really close by to were I live. Also to heat them up: I like to use the microwave (even more effective than putting them on your cup). It takes seconds (try 10 seconds). Take a careful first bite: the syrup filling heats up more than the outside cookie part. Enjoy!!!
You have to have a heart to heart talk with yourself before going into Costco, then it is possible to avoid impulse buying. We currently are saving a for a vehicle for our daughter to take to college, so I keep that in the back of our mind. We are having a contest who can save the most each mouth, such a fun competition between myself, husband and daughter. Car we need not little things!
Sam's Club has it where you can scan items into the cart and not have to go through the check out and you can see how much money you are spending as you shop and even take items off your list if need to put something back. I know in Minnesota where there is a Costco there is a Sam's club not too far... my kids used to drink Prime until I googled what it exactly was and now they are not allowed too. I appreciate all your videos.
I ended up getting a 4foot lit Christmas tree. My husband complained since we already had a 4foot tree but this one was so much more sturdy and the lights are so pretty !!!
Don’t regret the cute tins. We bought them last year and we’re disappointed to discover how little servings are actually per container. But the stroopwaffles are delicious…better fresh in Holland though.
Twenty minutes!! I can't imagine getting through a store that size. I like how you tell the boys to add items to their lists and they were okay with that. I would love the hot chocolates. Swiss Miss is my favorite brand. Hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. 😊
Dawn, your reactions to your Costco finds and your children’s wants are so similar to mine! 😅 I’m glad you heard me saying “get the queso dip!” 😂 It’s actually super helpful to have someone peruse Costco for me before I go this month! ❤😊 Thanks!!
Those sleds are the best. So simple but so fast and easy to steer! Other kids always want to borrow my kids’ when we’re out sledding. Beats anything I had growing up or anything else our kids have had.
We gifted the axe throwing set to my husband for Father's Day. It's obviously an outdoor activity which makes it seasonal for us MN folk, but it's great fun and remarkably safe for the kiddos. ❤
Stroopwaffels are amazing!!! I enjoy shopping at Costco for the holidays. I do have to be careful about blowing my budget at Costco, just because they have so many great ideas for gifts for family and friends.
We got the card game set for my mom’s house. Great deal! I passed on the beat board, seems like clutter to me. I remember one year you showed these building sets that come in a box. I can see them in the video. I got the bowling and pinball for my kids. They seem great and you can recycle or toss when they’re done building and playing.
I LOVE Costco, especially for some of the specialty items. In Northern Virginia we have all of the items you showed, including the Christmas greens in the planter. I bought one last year and it lasted forever. It was so pretty on the porch. The grass fed beef is also great. So easy and delicious, if a little pricey. We buy a lot of the same items! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
Those seasonal planters at Costco look so small in the video! I was surprised that you thought they were a good deal 😂. Then I actually saw them at my store in NC and they are almost 3’ tall. They are a good deal
Enjoy the stroopwafels (oo spoken o from the beginning of ozone) with love from Holland. If you want to make life easy syrup waffles which is the literal translation. When you eat them, lay them on top of your favourite hot drink mug for about a minute or two. The heat makes the syrup soften which just tastes better. Traditionally eaten with coffee to counter act the sweetness.
Your mixed feelings at the end of your shopping trip just had me cracking up. Sometimes the occasional treat is good for the soul. You did really good overall after facing so many obstacles.
Costco is similar around the different regions, but here in Charleston SC we have zone specific plants. We went in yesterday for eggs, coffee & biscotti. Came out with two fresh wreaths, two San Disk "thingies" (but returning the ones from Amazon) and socks for my grands. And we found a smart TV for my mom. So, yes, it can be dangerous to go into Costco. Thank you to everyone for explaining the squishmallows (had no idea it was Harry Potter related) I believe if you are frugal and a minimalist you can stick to your list, but also realize what's a great deal. I can now tell you where all the Costco's are in 33 states, as we continue our Airstream journey across America. Thanks for taking us along Dawn & your young gentlemen ~ Nanna Wanda
Sneaky Prime made it to the checkout!!! Im in the UK and love seeing what Costcos have! The HP squishmallows are adorable - so glad im not able to impulse buy them! happy TG
I hear you on Costco and mostly try to avoid it at all costs! My parents do a lot of their shopping there and are pretty disciplined with a list. But I do take advantage of tagging along with them 2 or 3 times a year to pick up some very specific things 😃
We've never been to Costco, but we have been to Sam's & impulse buys are real, especially this time of the year. The boys are so sweet. Smart idea of putting things on their Christmas lists.. 😊
Hello Dawn, yes Stroopwafel are the best🤭 but I am from the Netherlands so I know. And yes we put them on the tea or coffee mug to melt the caramel a little bit. But you can also put them ,very sort, in the microwave. Be careful because if you do it to long you burn your mouth on the hot caramel inside. Greets Simone

I am amazed at your Costco in your area. We live in Fresno California and our Costco is ALWAYS so crowded that we can barely move around. It has only become this way in the last three years. We seldom shop there any more. I used to really enjoy shopping at Costco but now it is an ordeal.
I love Costco. It's right down the street from me and our family goes several times a month. It's the only place I buy clothing because everything actually fits, it's great quality, and they have such an easy return policy if something doesn't work for me. I also like buying things I use all the time (tampons, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.) in bulk so I don't have it buy it often. It's also great to be able to try out new food that we normally wouldn't using the samples, and we ALWAYS buy a cooked chicken. Cheapest dinner ever and you can use it in so many ways! Oh and side note: the cafe also has really cheap, delicious food. Way better than most fast food places.
love Costco for the eggs Irish butter TP, paper towels, the turkey you got, frozen broccoli cauliflower pizza celery hearts guacamole sweet onions lots of organic food good deals on turmeric and CoQ10
Stroopwafels are AMAZING! And do try balancing it on your coffee cup - the heat makes the caramel go super-gooey and lovely. We have a Welsh version called Tregroes Toffee Waffels too
Thanks for showing us what’s at Costco right now, dear Dawn! I saw so many fun things for gifts, and it’s neat to “window shop” sometimes! You will love the stroopwafel! I live in the quaint little Dutch town of Lynden, Washington, in the northwesternmost corner of the US, a few miles south of British Columbia, Canada. We have stroopwafel at the store and we can buy them at the Dutch Bakery as well. They are super delicious! Enjoy!! 😃
We are across the border, in Abbotsford! My inlaws used to have stroopwafels at Christmas! Yes, Lynden is a sweet town...I go to the quilt shops there on occasion!
Might want to check out the Prime Drinks Ingredients, Risks And Safety Concerns, especially in children. Pkg says not for those under 18. Up to you though. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!🎄🎄
My trick with Costco is going every week (it’s only 10 minutes from my house). I go with a list and I DO NOT BROWSE!! I’m in and out in under 20 minutes (plus extra time if it’s busy) and I only get what I need. Frozen fruit and a few veggies are a good price here in Ontario🇨🇦🥰
I've never been to a Costco but I hear everyone talk about them. They look pretty overwhelming!! I live a 6 hours round trip drive from the nearest Costco. A 2 hour round trip drive from the nearest Walmart! A lot less temptation to shop!!!
Same kind of relationship with Costco, love and hate. Do not go often because I get so many impulse stuff. At the same time, love to get wines (for gifts) and almost ready to eat food, since I hate to cook.
Quick request to do a review of your "how to take great photos of family/kids" technique, (ie take a video and then do screenshots) because I'm sure some of our new friends on your channel have not seen that video and it is a lifesaver! Someone mentioned it on Diana's Bible study. Love you and loved seeing the boys!
Great self control! I’m surprised you took the kids with you! Now you will have to go back to get all the things they wanted! And I love Bobby And FlavCity too!
Dawn, here's something to consider: Squishmallows are the childrens' THROW PILLOWS . 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This might be my favorite comment of the day. 😄
Cool idea !
😂😅
My college kid still loves them. Costco has some.great Harry Potter House ones that we are trying to keep from purchasing but they are so cute!
🤣🙌🤣🙌🤣

Gotta love when the boys say 'meh' at some of the toys. Already showing some good shopping skills.

Yeah, stroopwafels 🇳🇱!
They were invented in 1810, and in Holland they are a staple we never grow tired off and that fits all occasions 😋
They are so good!
We go to Costco at the beginning of every month (even driving 80 mins one way!). They have so many organic choices that we cannot get otherwise. So we say yes Costco is definitely worth it.

It looks like a nice outing with the boys. They are growing up and behave so well. When my husband and I go to Costco we always have the $1.50 hotdog and drink and call it a date.
I was half expecting Dawn would treat the boys to hotdogs! They were SO well behaved.
Except that he took the car down when told not to-not a huge deal, but in my house that wouldn't be considered behaving SO well either, which might be why she didn't. Lol.

Costco has excellent prices on winter coats this year. I got two coats for less than what I would pay for one anywhere else. Great place to stock up for a coat drive!

We looove the packs of merino wool socks at Costco. We’re trying to cut back on polluting micro fibers and these are nice and toasty!
My parents are Nana and grandpa too. i’ve never heard anyone else have that combination for their grandparents. Love your videos.

Dawn, you have awesome skin and your boys have grown so much. I like how they helped you out at shopping, I missed mine so much, he just got married.
Oh i cant believe how big the boys are getting! ❤❤❤
I saw Adeline in the decorating videos of them outside and I was like 😱 she’s so tall!
My Costco is always so full of people I can’t believe how empty yours is. Lucky you.
It was a Wednesday afternoon, I don’t dare go on evening or weekends, I’m not that patient!!
I go the last 45 minutes of them being open. It’s the least crowded at that time.
You look so pretty in this video Dawn!!
Literally the best money I’ve ever spent on this course❤.
Dawn, your boys are precious!
Dollar General for Christmas lights!! We got 200 light strings for $2!
Thanks Dawn - I feel overwhelmed with all that choice and think if I went to Costco I would come out with an empty bank account!
That axe throwing game is pretty fun. The kids where playing that at my nieces house this Thanksgiving.
The "No" at 00:41 made me laugh out loud.
Stroopwaffles are life changing!
I’m in Washington state and we have the greenery pots too.
You can make your own garlands. It could be an art project. You have ribbon, glue guns, and pine trees.
💯 %! Don’t waste money on things you really don’t need.
Nice little helper you have
Dawn-I feel the same as you about Costco. The hot chocolate is really good!
I’m glad to see my boys aren’t alone in their love of multiple camos.
They’re at our costco in PA! I buy them every year!
Love the White queso
My trick with Costco is going every week (it’s only 10 minutes from my house). I go with a list and I DO NOT BROWSE!! I’m in and out in under 20 minutes (plus extra time if it’s busy) and I only get what I need. Frozen fruit and a few veggies are a good price here in Ontario🇨🇦🥰
The queso and stroopwaffles are a must purchase!
I've never been to a Costco but I hear everyone talk about them. They look pretty overwhelming!! I live a 6 hours round trip drive from the nearest Costco. A 2 hour round trip drive from the nearest Walmart! A lot less temptation to shop!!!
You need to do a review of the items you bought that are new to you 😊
Costco queso is life!! ❤
Same kind of relationship with Costco, love and hate. Do not go often because I get so many impulse stuff. At the same time, love to get wines (for gifts) and almost ready to eat food, since I hate to cook.
The white queso is our favorite, the Mexican street corn is my brothers favorite
In Mississippi here, we have the greenery and the potted plants, but not the snow boards! 😂😊
Big carts and so much math. Such a great description.
Good call on the queso! I get it everytime
Your boys have great haircuts!
