    Cody’s video: • Why every professional...
    The most important thing! and I forgot to mention it, the fact the 90MM has Optical stabilization and can help with the hand held b-roll.
    Cody and I are always going back and forth about which lens is better the Sony 85MM f1.4 OR the Sony 90MM f2.8 macro lens. We set out to see based on how we use the lens which one would be better.
    To make this fair both lenses are used on the same Sony A7iii with the same picture profile on auto ISO set with 1 stop over exposed.
    I'm blown away at how much sharper the 90 is in both photo AND video. Now, as stated the auto focus isn't as fast in the 90 but I love how sharp this lens is.
    It's still by far the best lens I have ever bought. I use this lens more than any of my other lenses.
    Which would you choose?

    I was thinking of getting the 85mm 1.8 even though i have the 90 because i only see it as a macro lens. This persuaded me to keep practicing with 90. Thx for the great content!

    Very well done video and practical evaluation, Paul. Thank you!
    As an amateur photographer who enjoys many aspects of the hobby, from landscape, to city walks, interesting faces, low-light and architecture I own both the 90mm f/2 (for macro) and the 85mm f/1.8…because the salesman sold it to a newbie.
    Can you think of any possible reason for owning both these lenses? I could return the 85, pay about $100 restocking fee and just move on, or keep both and chalk it up to experience. What do you think?
    Thanks for all your videos; I am glad I discovered them. Bravo!
    Best,
    Will

      Thank you so much for your comment! I will say, IMO the 90 was not designed for video so the auto focus is much slower than the 85. If you plan to shoot any video and want nice bokeh and shallow depth of field use the 85.
      If you plan to just shoot photos it seems redundant to have both in my opinion. See if websites like MPB or KEH have a good trade in value or maybe even sell it yourself.
      Cheers.

      @@PaulMDillon Many thanks for your guidance, Paul. The Photography store told me this morning that to take back the 85mm f/1.8, which is still in their sealed Sony box and for which I had paid $548, they were only able to
      give me a credit of $400. That means that though they are kind enough to take the lens back, they are charging me a $148 restocking fee, which is 27%!! So I am stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. This store aside, what do you think of my keeping both? Thanks again!

    Do you recommend the 90mm for product photography?
    Thanks for the video!

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what type of products. The thing I do know, is this is still one VERY sharp lens, especially for the price. You can find them used 700-800 and like $900ish new. You won’t find another lens at that price point that’s that sharp. 🤙

    I had to return the 85. It was just too rough with its focus. So much hunting and noise it felt like a 15 year old lens. I went with 70-200 and splurged as it completes my bag.

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Direction my friend (Cody in the video) returned his 85 as well. My next lens will surely be the 70-200 2.8! I’ve wanted that for awhile now

    the MFD of 85mm lenses is really annoying, and I use crop mode and clear image zoom to get around that annoyance. I use the 1.8 version, so no issues with weight.

      Guy With Camera I had my eye on that lens before I bought the 90. If I can find someone with that lens I’ll definitely check it out.

    • @PaulMDillon

      Enzus I actually don’t use either to vlog with as both focal lengths are much too close. I use the Zeiss 18mm 2.8 to vlog with

    I've owned the 90mm 2.8 (very sharp for macro photography) for a couple of years but reviews indicate the Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro might be a touch sharper. Should I trade in the Sony for the Sigma? I'm in a dilemma!

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No way really!? The 90mm lens is one of the sharpest lenses Sony has made.
      Do I need to buy the Sigma lens for a comparison video now 😂

      I went Sony, absolutely nobody who doesn’t zoom 300% will see any difference and sigma has no OSS.

    I already have the 90 mm macro and have been straining to make a decision on whether or not I need faster glass… I think I’m just gonna stick with my 90 mm....However 1.4 sure is a lot more light annnnnnnd the Bokuh....Arrrrrrgh!!

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. It’s a very hard decision between these 2 lenses.
      On the one hand, having faster glass is great for low light. what bums me out is that darn 2ft minimum focusing distance 😬

    I assume you mean the 1.8? I didn't know there was a 1.4, ah the GM gotcha.. yeah I find the FE 85 1.8 is amazing for the price. I just picked it up in Japan for 340.00 used.

    So I use to own the 85 1.4 GM its a fantastic lens, its TAC sharp and the bokeh is very nice. However its slow and noisy when autofocusing which didn't bother me too much because I only shot stills and wasn't in a hurry. I recently sold it and bought a Tamron 17-28, mic and a few other things to get into video. I miss the 85 mm but in this situation I think I am going to pick the 90 2.8 macro lens, The 90 can be used for portraits, video and since I do wildlife photography I can use it for bugs/insects too. Lol at Cody and the Eagles I am the same way......SQUIRREL !

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cody’s always running off when he sees wildlife lol. When recording this video before I saw any of the footage I thought I loved the 85 for video. After seeing how much sharper the 90 is I fell in love. Great all around lens in my opinion.

    • @PaulMDillon
      @PaulMDillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re correct. Lens use is subjective. This video was made because my friend Cody and I try to use them for the same thing. That’s why we decided to see which one was better for our use.

    • @golfkhakis
      @golfkhakis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s incorrect... the 90G is also designed for portraiture
