    Quickie tip: Diffraction doesn't usually start to kick in until ~f/16-ish, *however* , if you reduce the focusing distance then diffraction starts to get worse much sooner - it can start to mess with image sharpness as soon as f/11. This doesn't mean you can't shoot at those tighter apertures, but if you're looking to squeeze as much sharpness as you can out of the shot and the focusing distance is very close then it's something to remember. About ~f/8 would be as tight as I would want to push very close macro shots if sharpness is a concern. Chasing a bug around a flower? No problems - go for it - f/11 will be fine. Getting super fine detailed shots of a piece of jewelry or something like that? Stick to f/8.

    I don't know about "best" but it is certainly the most SOLID prime in Sony's lineup. Unlike newer G and GM offerings this one is ALL METAL. Also, the push pull snap focal ring is the very definition of solid. I really like the Diamond knurled texturing on it too, way better than the horizontally stripped rubber on the rest of the lineup. Part of me wish that the rest of the G and GMs can be of this all metal construction with its satin finish and finely checkered focus ring... yeah, yeah, it will make everything heavier than they have to be but that feel is to die for. It doesn't have an aperture ring though so you'll need to use the shutter wheels on the body.
    --
    You can pick one up used for $500 give or take. If you have the money, it's one of the most satisfying buys in the realm of FE lens irrespective of price or brand.

    This is the best macro lens that I have ever owned!
    I sent your video to the Atomos guys in New York. They were impressed with how you solved the sync issues.
    I have used your method with great success.
    There is a new sync time code generator box coming out with Atomos. It will calibrate the Atomos via the HDMI to the Sony with a 3.5mm cable.
    It will automatically sync other sync boxes or you can buy a smaller sync box to hook up to other devices including your cell phone or Go Pro.

    You made this lens look so good, Pav that I wanted to go and caress my own copy! It has a very unique build and stands apart from all the other Sony lenses. It is a toss up between the 90mm and the 24mmGM which one I love handling the most. I got my 90 macro a few months after it was released and went through a bitter snowstorm across town to buy it as it was the only copy left in the city due to being in such high demand. It was my first full frame lens, bought before I had switched over from my a6500. At the time, it was also the most money that I had ever spent on a lens, ha,ha!

    First time to your channel! Great content! I’ve been using this lens for the past few years (A7RIV) and I dipped my toes into the Fuji water with the XT4. I’m wondering if you could offer your opinion on the Sony 90mm 2.8 vs the Fuji 80mm 2.8 macro. Thoughts?

    • @davidwamback9000
      @davidwamback9000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert, the Fuji XT4 is a 26 mp APS-C camera, whereas the A7RIV is a 61mp Full frame camera, and the Sony lend I stated by DXO mark as one of the best in the world and will stand up to 61mp, so the Sony wins in terms of image quality (especially blown up ) & tripod mounted. However the Fuji in terms of camera stabilization may be better than the Sony & the lens has fast auto focusing. Perhaps for hand held the Fuji will give you more "keepers" than hand held Sony, but the keepers from Sony will have better IQ. In addition the Sony can be cropped much more. If your only intent is to post online, I doubt the difference will be noticeable to the naked eye by most viewers.

      90mm is a better lens overall - best to google minimum focusing distance for these lenses.

      yes, I can't see why not. The only thing to watch for is that the auto focus needs to be in the ball park area for it to work quick. It has got very loooooooong way to travel from macro to infinity and it will sometimes hunt if you change the focal plane from super close to far away often.

    Most dedicated macro lenses are very good (I have the Laowa 100mm macro and Sigma 105mm, currently).. Having used both the Sony and the Sigma I personally think the Sigma 105mm has the edge over this (barely) for FE if you don't need the built in image stabilisation... But both are extremely good lenses..

    • @joele4197

      @@PavSZ The Laowa is 2:1 which is nice, but obviously manual only so not good for focus stacking but for single shot macro it's a lovely lens to use and the IQ is superb too.. It's a true APO design so you won't see any bokeh CA..

      I have the Laowa 65mm macro (Manual) lens - It may be 2:1, but the Sony 90mm f2.8 images are far superior, albeit it does cost twice as much. The Laowa, however, is tiny and easy to carry about when hiking.

      There is no issue with focus when u use it on Sony A7iii or similar bodies, which I use. It struggles in low light on A7. I have used it on both bodies and can tell the difference. Still its the sharpest lens I have used and don't regret buying it.

  • @ipadize
    @ipadize 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Build quality is top and pictures are tacksharp. the only downside of this lens is the rather noisy autofocus if you do films.
    also a really nice feature is the af/mf "switch". also this is i believe the only focus by wire lens for sony which is linear and not acceleration based (meaning no matter how fast or slow you manually focus, it will always focus to the same distance relative to the position of the focus ring)

    • @tkermi
      @tkermi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me the bokeh in other than macro use is not great - too busy for my taste. But then again this is a macro lens and for that it's great. Still for me its picture quality is not quit as good as Laowa lenses but the build quality/reliability is better.

    I have it, bought in November 2018 as one of my first 2 lenses when I switched to Sony (the other one was the Batis 40/2.0). I love it too, only issue with it is when using it to shoot people the eye AF often misses the eyes. Not by much, but it's noticeable. When instead you manage the nail the focus, the sharpness is unbelievable. But yeah if you need to melt away a busy background 2.8 might not be enough. I found that just by being a bit more careful on the background choice it can work very well indeed for portraits.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that;'s the trade off between super blurred background or perfect sharpness on eyes. I shoot people a lot with 50mm f1.4 and 80% of time I have it at f4 - safe

      @@NLMusique I don't think macro lens is the best for generic food photography all together. Great for going in super close to focus on one part of the dish but may be not the best for shooting full plates etc.
      It will be ok, just not the most versatile.
      I've been shooting food professionally for nearly 20 years with 50mm and only recently with 24-105. With that I can get more of the food in the shot and go super close if I need to.
      In regards to lights - I've been using a lot just a single portable LED video light and placing it on the table, next to the food, pointing it up, then using a big white card held just above to bounce the light back.

I have done Macro Photography since 1980, so I do now a little about Macro Photography, first you do not need autofocus for Macro shooting, i fact it is much easier with manual focusing, second the stabilizer in the Sony 90mm makes it more vulnerable and more complex Lens design, so a manual only focus Macro Lens will always be the best choice for me. As far as I know at 1:1 the stabilizer system in the Sony 90mm only gives half a stop !!! So that system are a waste ! If you are lucky you get a good Lens sample, if you are unlucky you may get a bad sample of the Lens which many have tried ! I will not recommend this Lens for serious Photographers for Macro shooting.
