Sweet Sri Lankan Lady in Kalutara, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

- Upon my arrival in Kalutara, while parking my tuktuk, a guy invited me into his restaurant. After having a small pastry and a tea he asked me for 1000 Rupees which is about 10 times the price it should be. Obviously I didn't appreciate this behavior so I asked some other people about the real price.
After that I continued exploring Kalutara center and I met some funny characters. Also a lady that was selling some sweets. I ordered some and it was delicious!
After that I made my way to Richmond Castle which is located in a beautiful tranquil area just outside Kalutara. I toured the place and chilled out a bit in the gardens.
On my way back to Kalutara I picked up a lady with my Tuktuk, we had some awkward interactions until I dropped her off in the center. Am I now a certified tuktuk driver?

Hi Tim, first as a Sri Lankan I convey my sincere appolagies for that scammers behaviour. Im from Kalutara and this man is known to cause trouble to every one. Loitering in the town hunting the innocent.
Regarding the boats with Belgium Logo, these were donated by a Belgium charity soon after the Tsunami as a helping project to the Sri lankan fishermen who lost their boats. Keep exploring 🇱🇰 there are good people. . . ❤❤❤

Hi Tim, your action will open the eyes of other scammers. Some gem merchants hv become millionaire over a short period bcoz an ordinary person not aware of the actual price. I read in the papers today that the particular sales person was arrested.

First and foremost thank you for bringing this incident upto this extent, least now our SL government will see the real state and the consequences of having such a poor managemnt stratergy within this country's financial controls they have in all trades. Also not to mention the poor controle they have upon prices and retail rates not only for forigners even for locals. Arresting this man for this incident is not the solution but planing out to avoid such situations is what we need to focus on, that will happen if we have better policy and management professionals in the ares which is what we lack in our country.
Finally, I wholeheartedly appologize as a Sri Lankan citizen for what you went through and I also would like to request you not to judge our country's level of warm hospitality from this incident as we have much much more for you to discover.

Dear Tim, I am really sorry about your experience at that restaurant. I also live in Kalutara city. I have also got food from the same shop where you ate. But that person who guided you is not the owner of that shop, he is an employee of that shop. It is very unfortunate that you were charged more for the food you received. Some people (small percentage) commit such unjust acts. But majority Sri Lankans are not like that. Most people are good & very hospitable people. I think you have experienced it too. The Tourist Police would be happy to assist you. Itchy Boots, a tourist from Netherlands posted a video of a cop demanding money (not in Sri Lanka) and those cops on duty were fired

We have exactly the same vadai cake and tea here in Malaysia. For one vadai and a cup of tea, it would cost you about RM 2.50 here. The restaurant owner charged you 800 Sri Lankan Rupees which is about RM 12.60. That's at least 5 times the real price if you were to eat the same meal in Malaysia.

The ugly truth is, this shop owner says that he is a Buddhist and that he would like to take this Belgium guy to the Kalutara Bodiya. Then he goes and scam this tourist for 5 times more than the regular price. The beauty is, when he shops from the street vendor (woman) he gives her 5 times more than what she asked for. Then she says pointing at the church across from the street, is her church showing the Holy Cross College. This is a really bad message for Sri Lanka as a tourist nation and as a majority Buddhist community. The consumer service authority should seriously look into this matter and make sure that all shops whether it is street food or restaurant food to have PRICES MARKED on the item to make it easier for tourists. If we are calling Sri Lanka a tourist destination. As I know the tourist industry is helpless with this terrible situation. This is an on going scamming faced day in and day out by the tourists. This video clip is going to do a serious damage to Sri Lankan tourism. I’m glad that this culprits face is exposed. Great job Tim. They always blur the face of criminals. I don’t know why? Perhaps, utter stupidity. This man should be charged for hindering the tourist industry in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka desperately needs it’s tourist industry to pick up.
