  • Last used in 1982, the Dumbarton Rail Bridge is a rusting relic sitting in the San Francisco Bay.
    I decided to check it out up close so I grabbed the quad and went exploring!

    This actually shows just how much infrastructure would still be required to rebuild the Dumbarton Rail Bridge, obviously the section from Redwood City to the bridge needs serious rebuilding, while the side to Fremont is largely complete. Of course, the next thing before the bridge is reactivated is that a through bridge inspection needs to be undertaken to determine if the bridge is still considered structurally sound? However, companies like Facebook have donated money in order to see the Dumbarton Rail Bridge reactivated.

    Wow, awesome footage. I was raised in Newark and this was the actual bridge used near my house when I was a kid. Really brings back memories.

    Very useful... Looks like the only thing blocking access is the fence at the start of the bridge section.

    • @evmoFPV

      Yeah there's plenty of people who've gotten out on it. The middle swing section though would be really hard.

    • @dumbwithmilan
      @dumbwithmilan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was a hole dug under the fence. I just crawled under it and went on the actual bridge. I see why it’s blocked off though. The railway bridge has gaps in it which can be easy to fall into the water if you slip.

    If any of ya’ll want info on this bridge, it stopped service around the 80s and was destroyed by a fire. This video has more info th-cam.com/video/aoLM9nGW6KM/w-d-xo.html . They want to rebuild it now and make it a train line for commute.

      Many bridges built by the Southern Pacific Railroad (such as this one) were built with 2 track capacity should the line ever need to be expanded. This line unfortunately never had the traffic to justify adding a 2nd track, much less survive past the 80's. There is a bridge with this quirk over in Marin County, a very nice place to visit.

      You have to have customers on it or it has to increase route shipping speed first. RR's won't touch it if it doesn't increase earnings.
