have you considered going the way of the swashbucklers? i’m quite sure that you can “totally normally acquire” the game, move over the dlcs to your legit game directory, should run fine. alternatively just download dlcs directly
The Dutch going fascist is an odd thing that happens before Man The Guns I'd assume, strangely enough Mexico also turns fascist, even if historical is on.
As someone who has only played with the free stuff in the game, I can tell you that happens because those nations don't have any other advisors, and pick the demagogue, slowly turning them ahistorical.

In combination with the ai being dumb, and choosing an ideology advisor instead of an actually good one.
With the "new" base game some things in the game dynamics just changed a bit weirdly. Things I noticed compared to the "old" basegame: -The soviets always lose completely in historical. Even when you send 50% of your supply as lend Lease in the hope for them to push out more units -the Netherlands will turn fascist in historical for some reason -the AI allies need player support to win in Africa (else they will screw up big time) -republican Spain seems to win more often. -japan is able to overwhelm China much more easily
Pre-DLC merge you COULD have puppets in the base game-one kind of puppet, without the autonomy system. T4V added subject management but they did exist before it.
Let me tell you I'm kind of a new player I have almost 300 hours and I was telling you for over half of that I was playing with no DLC and it was a struggle to play any other country but I finally had those three free ones and then I bought no step back and the ones for the Balkans even though I don't have all the DLCs this makes the game so much better is kind of crazy how DLC changes so much😭😭😭
if you literally cant afford the game, just pirate it. If you ever become rich, you can pay for it, devs did a good job but yeah the pricing isnt really centered around the average guy.

The worst thing about basegame hoi is the missing navy designer. It is absolutely necessary to enjoy building navy, without it it's absolutely painful.
0:38 Ah yes, without the free Poland focus tree dlc. That happens. Only encountered that when I launched the game from the folder, without an internet connection to steam, while only having the game from steam library sharing. It was weird.
The only designer that adds much to the game is the Naval one. It makes sense that you can upgrade tech, and add it through refitting older ships. The plane and tank designer would be a fun stand-alone feature in a simulator, but it's just make work. I have done exactly what ISP is doing recently, that is playing with "all" the DLC turned off, and only miss Man the Guns for the naval designer, the US alt history which actually has some good buffs to go interventionist democracy US, and the sea tile control feature.
To this day, i am still puzzled by their bizarre choice to give Switzerland of all things a focus tree. Their whole thing throughout history is not getting involved. Could have had an Austrian focus tree. At least they were somewhat involved in WW2, certainly more than Switzerland, just why Switzerland i don't think even the Swiss want a focus tree. Paradox really is just a mystery.
I've been a fan of HO4 for years. Wanted lately to buy either HO4 and slowly buy the dlcs as i learned the game, or Stellaris, and I was trying to decide between the 2 (even watched your base HOI4 video from a year ago). I saw this video today and I didn't even know the first few DLCs were added to the base purchase. I won't say that fact, and your video, convinced me or anything, but my game finished downloading before i finished this video. Nice video comrade
I’m glad that they still include some of the alt-history paths in the base game, because I feel like if you couldn’t go ahistorical aside from manually justifying, clicking different events, etc. without paying $19.99 the game would get real old real fast.

My main issue with designers is there is no indication what is good and what the numbers you see actually do beside the "bigger number is better" how much does one military factory give in terms ot production how are you supposed to know what a expansive tank is what do the breakthrough stats mean in exact numbers same as soft attack etc, from watching ton of videos i concluded that 15 production of a tank is roughly the "ideal" cost soft attack armor breakthrough no fucking clue so i just do the "bigger number goes brr"

Now imagine me before they added that dlc, the only focus trees were the main nations with no alt history paths, Poland, and only recently Finland. No air volunteers, no puppet interaction, no designers, impossible to quell resistance cheaply, no armored cars, no special forces stuff. It was legitimate difficult to take out France because the French and English Ai get insane buffs to aircraft that are unbeatable. And forget fighting the United States and Russia at the same time. No winning

the designers are cool for roleplay and minmaxing, but I would REALLY love it if there were buttons you could press at the beginning of the game to deactivate so and so designer. sometimes, I just want to go zoom with light tanks without having to worry about making them too expensive, or build a fleet of sub 3 and destroy the royal navy.
Dutch always flip fascist without dlcs, but if you do the Germany focus path that nobody does which is flipping your neighbors fascist and allying them instead of annexing them, they would probably flip even faster

I have a weird idea for another terrible game ISP! Puppets only! Generaly: as UK (they fit the best for it, but I guess France or USSR could do it too) release all/most of your colonies (you can leave Malta, Belize and all the one-tile as to not burn down your PC) as puppets, and use their troops as a backbone of your army. You have to call all of them in case of war, so the front is the same as if you were playing normal UK. Also, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland count as colonies too. Of course your can run some elite units from British core terrytories, but only to the limit of your manpower (can't use the trick with using colonies manpower for your builds). I am curious as to how that would go for you...
