      the thrill of the reload! I'd be lying if i said Metal Gear Solid didn't heavily influence which guns i like, especially MGS3. I never gave much thought to wheel guns and i really didn't give any thought to the Colt SAA until i played that game for the first time. It made me go back and take a closer look at the real M1911A1 that my great grandpa used during WWII and the wheel guns he left behind. He hated single actions with gate loading though, so he only ever got more modern double actions that you can load with a speed loader. i don't think he ever used a moon clip, but i have shot wheel guns that were set up for moon clips before, and its pretty awesome.
      Part of the reason why cowboy action shooting is so amazing is that you are forced to be so fast and accurate with these handicapped guns. its like watching the world's fastest sprinter cover himself in weights before running at the olympics, and he still wins

    • @reliantncc1864
      @reliantncc1864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Blonde Viper A sense of urgency caused by using an inferior and obsolete gun? I'm gonna pass on that. I also do not want to be holding back a potential fight-ending shot in the hopes of getting a better shot because I'm worried about running out of ammunition. A modern handgun is in every significant way superior to a revolver. That is a fact. I like revolvers. I own two. But if I am picking a practical gun, I will never choose a revolver over a modern handgun. Would you? Oh, and I practice plenty.

    I have a Colt SAA with 5 1/2" barrel chambered in .38-40, make in 1904. I learned to shoot a handgun with that gun at age 11 and carried it for many years. In Jan 1973 it saved my life! In the early '90s I semi retired it and bought a new generation Colt SAA with 4 3/4" barrel in .45 colt! That has been my primary carry gun ever since. These guns are what I feel the most competent and proficient with. For me they they have a "pointability" I have never been able to duplicate with any other handgun. At any distance under 20 feet I don't have to use the sights. Came in handy in near darkness that Jan night.

    This man is a Craftsman, I have a double action, nickel plated Lightning, in pieces in a box, pearl handles and everything. Tore it apart to replace a spring and I will be Darned if I can figure out how it goes back together, love the gun, though.

    Mine would be a Great Western that was only made for a couple of years in the fifties in California. There was a shortage of Colt single actions due to all the TV Westerns and Great Western built guns until other manufacturers caught up. It is a clone of the Colt but it is important to me because it was left to me by my uncle who was like a father to me. We shot it a bit when I was a teenager and it was the first big bore pistol I ever shot.

    OMG.... I gotta say this is probably one of my favorite videos of yours and just at the right time, since I just purchased my first single action colt! I've always looked at you as a cowboy, especially since you have "that look," so I was personally glad that you chose the Colt with the stag handle (my own favorite)! BTW... thanks for going the extra mile and wearing the cowboy hat this time and hoping to see you wear it more in any future cowboy related fire arm videos. :)

    I wonder if there are any records left that would show who that cavalry Colt was issued to? It might be interesting to know more about the history of that gun and how it got from being an army issue in 1883 to Hickok45's collection in 2022.

    • @anthonyiocca5683
      @anthonyiocca5683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those records are called a “hand receipt”. The armorer maintains the “hand receipt”when the weapon is issued. Once the weapon is turned back into the armorer the “hand receipt” is given to the soldier filled out and dated as turned in.
      The armorer has the weapon, the soldier has the hand receipt proof he turned in the weapon. So unless the soldier kept that hand receipt as a keep sake is where it could be. Even today the U S Army doesn’t maintain a by name record of who was issued what and when.
      Since that weapon was in very good condition it may of not been issued much…

    I definitely agree with the "mid-range" barrel length. I think the 5 1/2" has just the right balance/range ratio. I love a good 7 1/2", but they do take a bit longer on the draw. ;)

    My choice is a no brained for me: 3rd gen 7.5" blue. Just because that's what I like. I shoot a Uberti Cattleman 7.5 45 colt blue. (Can't afford a real colt). Despite the old technology, I was impressed with ergonomics and balance from the first shot. I see why it was so popular in its day. Love the gun and the caliber! I only have (1), a Ruger 4 5/8" New Model Blackhawk convertible .45-Colt/.45ACP. But it continues to be my favorite handgun of several, not only to shoot and reload for, but for its amazing range of applications and capabilities from low recoil cowboy action to .44-mag levels (and everything in between). The reliability, safety, simplicity, and nostalgic appeal no doubt adds to the SA popularity and longevity.

    I like your choice, but all your SAA's are excellent. I noticed one thing since I am a grip maker--the grips on your final choice don't fit well, they could be made perfect but it would take quite a bit of shaping, sanding to get em perfect. If I lived nearby I'd offer to do the job for you, no charge. I am a fan of your videos.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've actually fitted a few myself. It's a miracle that these just happened to fit reasonably well, since I just robbed them off a different gun I sold long ago.
      I've not tried to improve them because I'm thinking that I'd like to have one-piece stag grips fitted to this Colt and my other one just like it that was also made in 1964. They would make a nice pair.
      Tough to find stag these days, especially one-piece grips that somebody could fit.
