    Eric, Mike Malaska, who works with tour players, teaches standing the club up from the top or redirecting the momentum of the clubhead so it tips forward and remains above and outside your hands. He wants to see the butt end of the shaft pointing just outside the right foot when the club is standing up. He says at that point the swing is done and you just rotate at that point and feel the club floating with the butt end of the club finishing pointing down just outside the left foot. He has an excellent TH-cam on this working with LPGA tour player Margarita Ramos. His teaching seems to run counter to yours as he promotes standing the club up as the downswing start whereas you talk about looping it from vertical at the top. I would appreciate your comments on this. Thank you.

    This is awesome and really addresses the two things I really need to work on. I constantly struggle with the weight shift in the feet and getting the club too flat behind me. Great advice on creating effortless speed. I will certainly give this a try on the range but since I'm just now FINALLY getting some consistency with two elements of the swing I've learned from your videos (the bowed wrist and hip rotation which have added solid impact and more consistent flight path) I will probably save this for later. The good news is that with the improvements I've seen from implementing your instructional videos I don't feel the need for more distance (even though we all want to crush the heck out of the ball).

      I’m an older single digit golfer and have been doing the “loop” thing for years and I get more speed/distance but not as accurate as a single plane....this the first time I’ve ever heard WHY and HOW it works...coupled with your shallow swing lesson about the wrist, it really gave me an understanding and confidence in what I’m doing. I have found when I use the “whip” swing I need to follow thru higher, lower causes violent hooks or swipes, higher seems to square up the club...thanks for this explanation, gives me something to experiment with in practice, and hit it further when I really need it.

    Eric- the pro at my home course has been teaching these same swing motions for years. He has 2 pros on the Ladies' tour under his tutelage, so it's valid. I've struggled for years intellectually to understand what he shows me. While the feel of the swing is essential to muscle memory, the mental association (picture in my mind's eye) has been at issue. Your video makes everything so clear that it's my AHA moment. Can say that when I do allow the club to loop, the speed gain gives me an immediate club to club and 1/2 advantage. While I'm on the verge of 60, I know I can gain that yardage consistently from this moment forward. Thank you for a cogent, well-reasoned and intellectually sound explanation. Can't wait to go out and be fully committed to the process.

    Eric, can you talk about the rotation of the forearms on the downswing? Marcus Jones commented below about shallowing the shaft. I've found that rotation of the forearms slightly clockwise (for a right hander, I'm a lefty so I rotate counter clockwise) at the start of the downswing drops the club head behind and shallows the shaft . Also, allowing the lead heel to come off the ground in the back swing and coming back to the ground in the downswing has helped increase my distance.

    Interesting Eric. Most great ball-strikers seem to compress into their backswing (but perhaps not the Long Drive Dudes?); some then compress further during their downswing pre-impact through left hip depth and head moving out over ball eg. Woods, Hogan, and a long list of others. Few rarely 'Raise' during backswing, or perhaps I'm wrong (WTF do I know?)?
    (Wayne Defrancesco even teaches this.).

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people who golf for a living stay pretty level or go down slightly. Long drive guys go UP. Either can work. Both types GO DOWN during downswing.

      @mikehardwicke23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CogornoGolf (I actually made an error in my reply, but that's not relevant to your reply- I meant 'lower through left and right hip depth'). So the long_ball guys go Up, Down, Up and the Money_guys go Down, Down, Up? I guess from the biomechanical perspective both work as long as the 'Transition' phase is 'Down' and the 'Delivery / Impact' phase is 'Up'? (Phew- that was long-winded. Sorry Eric!).

    Hi Eric!! One of my good friends really struggled with his severely STRONG R hand grip. His R hand was truly completely UNDER the grip with his VEE pointing down his target line. If he ever hit a good shot, it was just plain luck. He has committed to a "new" and much improved grip but is now struggling w "feel" in his swing. To him, every swing now feels wide OPEN. Do you think this "turning under" move would help his ball striking with his "new" grip and swing?? Many thanks!!

      Hey Chip!
      Unfortunately I don't think I can offer much good advice to your friend without seeing his swing and knowing more....would be making way too many guesses...could be so many things going on.
      Of course those "feels" sound normal. Grip changes are hard. They suck. It would be normal if we went from a STRONG grip to a NORMAL grip to have FACE way open....bc you have to adjust other variables
      Some of these videos on that topic may help, if not if you check out cogornogolf.com I can see his swing video and we can help

    Good video, Eric. Does this mean you're not an advocate of the single plane swing? Also, is this why Dustin Johnson bows his left wrist at the top of his backswing? I assume this action allows an upright backswing then drops the club into the "slot" on the downswing. Finally, like the look of your driver. What make is it? Thanks.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Single plane "idea" is okay but in reality the plane is shifting. Most all great ball strikers on a slightly lower plane during downswing than backswing.

      You go into "Left Side Bend" to get the shoulder down
      From 1/2 back to the top you go into "extension" to get taller.

I got down to a three handicap and competed on the local and state am. events. The issue is I was never satisfied. I'd remember the miss hits and forget about anything I did that was good.
    I'd play good rounds and go to the range after the round for hours, trying to tweak this or that. I burned myself out and finally got hurt. Two shoulder issues kept me out of the game for four years.
    Since I am healthy again ( About a year and a half now) I have never recovered my game. I'm still a 12. One of my quests is to make the easiest swing possible. No thoughts, just one or two.
    I don't want to think about shallowing my arms at all. I want to take the club to the top and rotate through the shot. This shallowing you talk about I want to happen by itself.
    I finally played some real good rounds at the end of the year without thinking about anything but playing. Practice becomes a curse to me. I have been known to spend 6 or 7 hrs at my clubs driving range.
    Maybe you can talk about the mental game more and how to practice things without getting carried away. If I have a two hour block I want to spend 30 minutes hitting balls and an hour chipping and putting. I can't get myself to stop. If I hit the ball poorly I can't get myself to leave the range without hitting good shots.

    Hey Eric, I do most of what you said and have been playing for 50 yrs but I.ve lost my swing. I think where I lost it is where to put the weight on my feet. Folks have been telling me hills but for some reason I think upright I should be more towards my toes? If so should I be equally distributed or weight favoring either right or left? Thx

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert....not everyone exactly the same...but if you are talking setup I would say
      pressure on the balls of your feet (just forward of middle)
      pressure distributed evenly 50/50

    On your other video on solid contact you discussed staying low and getting lower through the backswing and not getting taller. Seems to oppose your direction on this video. Is the difference specific to hitting a driver longer?

    • @richardnannini30
      @richardnannini30 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good comment, I am also a little confused. Is it taller with driver (hitting up on the ball) and lower with irons (compressing the ball)?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly. This is driver specific for creating more SPEED....also UP vs DOWN with body motions can be different with Driver with ball on a tee and angle of attack UP not down with irons on ground
      Good question!

    Eric thank you for this great video & instruction. Can you please tell me in regard to the role of hands/arm in the golf swing is it correct that your swing (downswing) is more lead side dominant ie lead arm/hand controlling the downswing ie pulling rather than a hitting action with the trail arm/hand dominating thru downswing & thru impact or a combination of neutrality of the hands?....have you done a video specifically on this?
    *I am using 'trail' & 'lead' side terms simply because I am Lefthanded & this description makes it far easier for a left hand golfer to understand.
    Many thanks again & i do hope you reply to my question.
    MarkPlunkett (Australia)

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mark...
      Unfortunately I don't know if that question is answerable how you would like it to be.
      I think the answer is neither....and both.
      I don't think it is neither lead side dominate nor trail side.
      Both play a role and but forces into the club.
      Some great players feel more lead side and others more trail.
      Is a baseball swing or tennis 2 handed backswing more of either? Would have to measure...
      People will always tell you what they FEEL...but real when measured is a different ball game.
      I would think of them more as equal partners....that doesnt mean you cant FEEL one side or the other and produce successful movements and shots

    Imagine my dilemma, I’m a true left handed person but learned to play right handed. I’ve taken lessons and had my swing corrected (I played a lot of baseball left handed) the mention of the backswing and getting the club behind you is great. I’ll be trying this on the range. BTW I’m 65 now.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some guys don't move as much forward and/or move forward and then back up some. Definitely some different micro movements with driver as the goal is different, ball is teed up, angle of attack different, etc

    I used to play with a figure 8 swing, very much like you advocate. The key that made it work was the timing---waiting on the club at the top to drop inside. You're right. It is effortless when done right. I didn't realize that it held more power potential. Does it require less rotation as well?

      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Doug.
      What I was trying to get across was this...
      1. Get the shaft more vertical going back
      So that
      2. You can get the clubhead behind your hands coming down
      Hope that helps.

    Good stuff, future videos lets talk about changing attack angles for driver,woods,irons, wedges. I think pros are pros because they can hit 6 degs up with a driver and then 9 degs down with a wedge very easy. I hit super high wedges but sting more drivers. Love to hear your thoughts/teachings

    Good instruction. Add on, be relax and allow max body motion. So often i tends to stiff up thinking it make bigger power. More relax = more whip = more outcome.

    I have experimented with flatter & vertical backswings & vertical=effortless power. No comparison. Vertical makes the club feel lighter as Eric says which means less tension in your arms & hands which helps create an optimal position for clubhead speed. It also makes it easier to rehinge sooner rather than later which I feel also enhances clubhead speed.

    Eric, is getting taller on the backswing a form of early extension? I have this move in my backswing and have been trying to get rid of it thinking it was a bad thing. When I see my swing on video, I come off the tush line in the backswing but then get back on the line in transition. At impact, I seem to get off the line again. Your thoughts? Thanks for all the great instruction.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're going to get taller for speed purposes...most of that should come from EXTENSION not from losing your forward bend. IF you lose your forward bend some you may have to offset with weight toward heel.
      In a general sense getting taller you can risk not having enough left side bend....which can be an issue in transition...yes.
      That move isnt for everyone.
