    Hey Tom,
    I'm about to do all that as I changed valve cover gasket and still no spark.
    As I was changing it smelt the petrol in the cylinders which indicates my pump is working so r my injectors...
    I'm now more focused on the ECU as I know the ignition cable get the signal from it and I replaced the sensor and no change...
    Thanks for the help m8 I really appreciate it!
    I wouldn't manage that sensor without ur video :)

      +Ivaylo Vasilev Yeah, if you smell fuel, then the crank sensor is ok (should be)... if you are not getting enough fuel, you can smell fuel, but it's not enough to run the engine. The timing belt could have stripped teeth.... it can still move / rotate the engine, but timing could be off due to the stripped teeth. Check fuel pressure, and the cam/ crank TDC marks.

    I had to cut mine out as well, I just did this in my car, but the zipties on like 3 cords together including the one for this sensor, I was worried if I tried to cut the zipties i could damage the others, so I cut the old sensor out, new one is much shorter and better though

    Hi Tom,
    I managed to replace the sensor, but still I get crank no start.
    So then I had a closer look at my spark plugs and they had oil on as well as the ignition coils..
    I don't know if it's enough to prevent spark, but I'm changing rocker cover gasket all together.
    EPC light still ON.
    What worries me if it's not the sensor and the light is still on, I don't know what it could be.
    I have engine light on as well.

      Scan for fault codes...oil in the spark plug wells can be an issue but you should have at least one plug that fires. they don't all stop at the same time unless there's an electrical issue. how did you check for spark & spark control from the ecm? is the timing belt OK? is the fuel pump running? the pump fuse? the ignition coil fuse?

    Nice work Thomas. What were the symptoms for this crank sensor replacement?And I must say, that you've got a lot of patience to work on these cars as crapped as they are. Take care....

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Customer complained about long crank time when hot... I was able to recreate the symptom on the hoist (had no rpm signal when viewed with VCDS). Original sensor, so I did not bother scoping... although, I also checked fuel pump current ramp just in case, it was a bit bumpy but still ok. I figured I post this video so people can see that the sensor can be replaced from the top (as one of my viewers pointed out to me).

      ***** Did the same with the wife's 1.8 it had a RPM sensor code and hard start, caught it with no RPM and just put a new sensor in it, as you,I did not bother to scope it as it was OE and original.

  • @ivaylovasilev9376
    @ivaylovasilev9376 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It cranks all the way, no start.EPC light ON.
    My spark plugs are fine,
    Diagnostics confirmed my suspicion of the sensor....hopefully it will fix the problem, as u know it could even be bad wiring or ECU.
    I'll let u know of my progress tomorrow,
    I have also an electrical problem, as I switch off my car....the fan comes on by itself and eats by battery.
    And it does that on it's own demand, it could happen 5 minutes after I turn it off or an hour.
    Do u think it could be a bad ECM relay?

      @EXOVCDS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Thomas,
    I find this video very informative thank you for posting.
    Attempting this exact procedure tomorrow on my 2001 1.8t A4.
    Located the sensor, must say it's one hell of awkward place they stick it...
    Just wanted to ask, the 10 mm bolt that holds it is that a normal 10mm socket I need to use to take it out?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @EXOVCDS

    My car hasn't been starting easy when it's cold and/or when it sits too long, if it's just been a couple hours, it will start right up but in the morning is when I have the most trouble, especially now that it's getting colder out. I make sure to go out and start my car on lunch breaks. Well I got around to checking codes, p0116, p0321 (speed ignition input/crank sensor whatever it's called lol) and P0420 which is catalytic converter don't know why but that's the easy one to remember, is it coincidence that it has to do with exhaust? Which I think P0420 can be set off from running too lean or rich and giving giving bad emmissions and in return setting off the p0420 catalytic converter picking up those bad emissions, then again that could be a host of many other problems all on it's own. But I started from the basic and cheapest with changing those 2 sensors the one on this video (crankshaft position/ignition speed input) sensor, and the coolant temp sensor, located by the firewall behind the engine with the c-clamp and 4-pins. I hope it's not the one underneath by the radiator fan, can't get much info on that coolant temp sensor and if that one would have a different code thank P0116 or not. Well i'm letting my car sit overnight and not touching it until morning to see if it still has trouble starting or not.
    I also have an engine ticking noise, almost makes it sounds like a diesel engine but not quite as loud. It only does it when the engine is hot (a few minutes after needle hits normal operating temperature) and low RPM or idle. It doesn't do it when my engine is cold. Or when I give it high RPMs. The noise ticks steady with the engine, until I get to a higher RPM and it goes away until i let off the gas and the RPMs drop again. I was leaning towards timing chain tensionor, but told also could be sticky lifters, or even a spark plug, even though I don't think I'm misfiring when my engine is hot. It's weird my car has one problem when engine is cold, another when its hot

    I'm having problems with my a4 cab, its an 04 audi A4 cabriolet 1.8T FWD model, the engine turns but doesn't turn on, we changed spark plugs on a engine mechanics suggestions and it seemed to work for 3 days but i just got tow'd home by dad. i was told if the car cranks but doesn't start. and the rpm dial doesn't go past zero then it would be the crank shaft sensor. just wondering if you could give your second opinion on it. the cranking and not turning on has been intermittent and very random for the past 2 weeks, and earlier i was able to turn it on after the cranking issue however it shut off on me and gave me a Red ( normally orange) battery warning light. just wondering if im looking at the right place to solve my problem.

      @EXOVCDS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Sheeley Every start-up or only when cold / warm. Could be a faulrt EVAP purge solenoid, fuel pump (fuel draining back), fuel pressure regulator... you need to monitor engine sensors & fuel pressure to find the issue. The ECM data stream can be monitored to find values that are out of place... the trick is finding them when they happen.

If it doesn't help start the engine... it could still be the pump, but you would have to check further inside the car at the pump connector.
