I see no reason a meeting between a complainant and a defense lawyer couldn't or shouldn't be recorded.
Even if you're in one of the 12 states that requires two-party consent all they'd have to do is notify you that there's a microphone recording things said in the meeting and if they still agree to talk there then it's a done deal, they just consented.
What lawyer would openly allow their 16 year old client to talk with the opposition.

So he would be well within his rights to record the conversation as well as any other conversation he has. Califonia and several other states have similar laws.
Single party consent states are fantastic when it comes to recording conversations.
