My Mom and I auditioned for the roles of Jamaican mother and daughter. Mommy rocked her line reading. The casting director loved her, but said she didn't look old enough for the part. But this actress was *chef's kiss*

This is a scene I used to show in my drama class. In a space of two minutes, the old Jamaican lady exhibits a vast degree of emotions and dispositions. She shows fear, then apprehension, followed by curiosity, then pain, then yearning, and lastly, contentedness. She underplays her delivery with hardly a hand gesture and all in the confines of a wheelchair, yet her performance is so powerful. Her delivery is flawless. Props to director, Martin Brest in allowing the actors to take their time in their delivery and allowing the scene to breathe. The perfect musical cue of strings coming followed with the piano tinkle delivered with pinpoint accuracy to accentuate what is already a very powerful moment. All of these things are what makes this scene the best scene in the movie.

For those who don't know. This is a remake of death takes a holiday. In my opinion, this is better than the original.

This thing dragged on for 3 hours! 3 hours! Much prefer the original. The ending was better for a start.

You aren't the only one to think so. If you aren't aware, Lois Kelly Miller was considered a national treasure in her native Jamaica for a long and celebrated career as a theatre actress.

One of my very favorite movies. Brad Pitt as Death that comes for Anthony Hopkins and decides to stay a while in the body of Brad Pitt. Great story great acting. Should have been an award winner!

Young Brad Pitt is a lot of people’s favourite Brad Pitt. Thelma and Louise was his first movie and my favourite Brad Pitt until Ocean’s Eleven.
This is the film that made me realize that Brad was one of the greatest actors on the planet & much more than just a pretty boy. I became a devoted Brad Pitt fan & this movie is a treasure!
He is also EXCELLENT in the movie THE MEXICAN - JULIA ROBERTS plays his girlfriend ❤

True story. Back in 2012, my husband's great grandma was in the hospital, nearing her time. She was 97. A week before she passed, she asked if anyone else seen the man in black in the room. She seemed afraid of him. When we told her no, we couldn't see him, she said he told her he would come back later. A couple days before she passed, she said he came back, but she wasn't afraid anymore. I believe it was a spirit taking her to the Lord❤
My mother of 98 saw a man in black with red hair. No one else saw him. She died the next day. The man was her grandfather come back to get her

It Is common for ppl close to passing to have hallucinations. Those are not spirits, it is just chemical imbalance due to organs failing, mostly kidneys and liver.

Barely any body movements, other than head and facial expressions.
I’m not even someone who believes in an “afterlife”, but the way her face melts and smiles and looks so relieved- it just sends warm shivers through me. It’s such good acting. I hadn’t seen the whole movie before I saw this scene and loved it.
I would like it if you tried. Might be surprised what you find if you look first before you find out for real. Never know what you can't take back once it happens.
Jesus Christ is very much real and he loves you more than you could ever comprehend while in the human mind. He is more real than what we perceive to be real. All beliefs are forms of religion and require faith regardless if you believe in theism or atheism.
Do you believe in science then? Scientists have shown that the chemical and electrical impulses in our brains are energy, quantum energy. And Einstein proved energy can't be destroyed only dispersed. Our thoughts are eternal. If that's not forever more I don't know what is.

When our body dies, our Mind, inside our Spirit being goes leaves the confines of the body.
The critical decision our short life on earth requires from us is “Where do we CHOOSE to spend ETERNITY”?!
There are 2,000 religions on earth. But none except ONE answers what your destination will be if you trust it. That “religion” is a man, son of God, who came to earth to teach us the truth of who the real God Almighty is. His name is Jesus.
Ask him to make himself known to you. It may be an instantaneous reply, or take days. But he WILL let you know he exists and loves you beyond measure.🙏❤️
I miss films like these. The score compliments the emotions of the scene perfectly. The acting is flawless and believable. That is the Hollywood magic that is missing from todays "modern" movies.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The 2nd scene between them when he visits her and actually takes her is even more profound and moving. Incredible acting, especially by her.

No, she was relieved briefly from her pain because in afterlife you feel perfect. That is why he adds „Soon!“.
@@stefanhofmann8297 "she's in a great deal of pain" his first words after "soon" he connected at her pain while she was with her eyes closed. it's subjective what really happen there. it may be a combination of removing her pain with a connecting her to a glimpse of bliss of pure being. still its a beautiful scene

Goes from recognising him as Death and not wanting to be left with him, to asking to be taken to the next place, in about 70 seconds.
She didn't actually recognize him as death. She initially took him for a bad spirit, which is why she was afraid of him. Only after he reassured her he wasn't an evil spirit did she realize who he was.
Very underrated movie. Interesting study of facing end-of-life issues.
One of my favorite Brad Pitt movies. Him playing the angel of death. Showing that death should not be feared. Just a natural conclusion of life

I like the touch of him initially refusing, then looking at the Doctor whom he was somewhat enamored with, and it drew out his compassion for the dying woman.
Not enough to "break the rules" per se, but enough to give her strength & hope by showing her what she will soon be experiencing.

Not technically an Irish accent per say. It's a very specific accent from Irish/UK travelling community. Ireland has 20+ accents divided in maybe 3 broad groups. Dublin, Northern Ireland and Country/Culchies accents.
Each of those has slight variations in the accent depending on what part of said region you're from.

As someone from Ireland who knows a bunch of them and yes that's what they call themselves and have for a long time. Gypsies is usually used for the Roma gypsies here

He's not a person. He was death personified. He knew her time was near and showed her what lay beyond the pain .. it's a good movie. A take on Death Takes a Holiday.
But they do, you see it everyday in people being kind to others, it can get hidden by all the bad stuff that is more obvious and louder. It's really out there .

Most are in their daily bubble, living their own created programs, perceptions and opinions, while in the meantime actual life is slipping them by.. Which is unfortunate.
@@justinzwaan6704 And that's because bad news/ irresponsible people gets a bigger response which is normal as bad news will have a big reaction, but then the figures of how many people react are just logged as big viewings. When we see online or on the news or in the papers you only have to read these headlines to know they want big reactions, you never get big headlines for all the good things unless it's heroic. It's all to do with how people and things that happen are portrayed .

This was SUCH an underrated movie and I'll never understand why.
The scene where he is intimate with Anthony Hopkins' daughter is incredle. The way death experiences this very intimate human act for the first time, his facial expressions, etc, show Brad Pitt at his best. A true tour de force and he is so beautiful in this film. One of my all-time favourite films and very underrated.

The two scenes with this great Jamaican lady and the ending lift this film from being a B movie snorefest to being a great piece of art.
At the same time he looks so good that it's easy not to pay attention to his acting.
This scene brings me to tears every time. Tears of joy. In conveying the essence of the moment, the acting in this scene is brilliant.

Every afternoon, true to my promise, I'd settle into the uncomfortable chair beside my aunt's bed. We wouldn't always talk, sometimes just the quiet companionship was enough. But then came that Saturday night. As the harsh buzz of the PA system announced visiting hours were over, tears welled in her eyes, a silent plea to stay. I squeezed her hand, my heart aching as I said goodnight. The promise of my return the next day, a fragile thread holding back the tide of her fear. Sunday morning arrived too soon, the air heavy with a premonition I couldn't shake. Rushing into her room, the empty bed screamed the unbearable truth. My aunt, the woman who braved the hospital only because of my promise, was gone. The weight of that broken vow, a constant echo in the hollowness of her absence.

This was such an interesting and entertaining story, exceptionally acted by all in the cast, but for me the star of the show will always be the score. Rousing and emotional, utterly beautiful.

The score and the casting of the movie is amazing… such an underrated movie… shame we do not get movies like this very often these days…
my friend stroked out and laid for months in a horrible state ... when he finally passed i was happy.
This was a very good movie and I'm not a big fan but he seems to pick very good projects! I enjoyed it tho it was a bit emotional. Or it could be my age finally running me down! Seems older I get the easier it is to make me cry! I don't know if we get more sensitive to emotion as we age or I've just slowed down enough to notice enough to feel the things I used to walk right by!

The music in this movie was incredible!! It seems they don't do that a lot anymore. Maybe they do, but I haven't seen anything with music like this in some time.
I'm reminded of the book "on a pale horse" where a man finds himself the incarnation of death, he goes berserk in a hospital ward where machines are keeping alive, in pain, long after their time.
