Disney is not the Brothers Grimm. Everything you know from film and television no longer has much to do with books. In fact, fairy tales were brutal, dark, explicit. Disney and Co. have made them child-friendly.

UFA is a well-known German film and television production company. It was originally established as the company Universum-Film Aktiengesellschaft (UFA) on December 18, 1917 in Berlin and then headquartered at Babelsberg Studios (right outside Berlin). It was for many decades the leading film and newsreel production company in Germany (and post-WW2 West Germany) and also spawned a national chain of movie theaters of the same name. After a lot of restructuring and change of ownership, it now belongs to the Bertelsmann Group (one of the world's largest media conglomerates).
DEFA, on the other hand, was founded as the company Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA) in the Spring of 1946 in Berlin in what was to become East Germany. A few years later it was nationalized and became the leading East German state-run film and television production company ("UFA of the East"). They also took over the UFA-built world-renowned Babelsberg Studios (after WW2 located in East Germany) as their headquarters. West German media (particularly radio, TV, and film) was officially forbidden in East Germany, so people living and growing up there (like all of Rammstein's members) mostly experienced DEFA-produced movies and television (especially for kids, via the two official East German TV channels).
These two are basically the MGM's and Paramount's of Germany.

@@xsezz Movies more so than television. But yeah, a lot of things split after WW2 due to the impending Cold War separation by opposing occupying forces and their doctrines. Babelsberg Studios is still big in the movie production business (cf. Wikipedia entry). Some of the more recent productions include "V for Vendetta", "Captain America: Civil War", "Æon Flux", "The Bourne Ultimatum", "Valkyrie", "Inglourious Basterds", "Cloud Atlas", "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "The Hunger Games", and "Isle of Dogs". The new "Matrix 4" was also filmed there. Some of the earliest Babelsberg movies of world renown include "Metropolis" and "The Blue Angel" with Marlene Dietrich who started her career with UFA there in the 1920/30s.

I just love Flake's dry humor, where he pretends to be serious but talks nonsense. Like in a comment I read once where someone had heard him say that the "Dalai Lama" song was based on a real experience between Till and Flake. For me at least I am almost sure that was sarcasm, otherwise it just sounds absurd! 😂
Anyways, you'll probably see more of that :) It actually took me a while in the beginning before I got that he was joking, since he sometimes can get a bit pessimistic in interviews. I just thought he was genuinely miserable 😂
And dear Oliver. He looks so anxious when he speaks; tense, and shrugging regularly 😂 My first impression of him was that he looks like a well mannered, shy kid 😄 Imagine my surprise when I saw him uhm.. taste Till during Bück Dich! 🙀
And I heard how the members viewed each other when they first got together; Flake being scared of Oliver but best friends with Till, Schneider and Richard not wanting Paul to join (Richard saw him as competition and Schneider just thought he was rude) but Till fighting really hard to get Paul in the band, even though he was often made the butt of the joke at Paul's hand. But Paul was possibly sceptic towards Oli as well, because he left him alone 😂
    Crazy how it's changed 😄

@@xsezz Yeah, definetly. Like the line about their first album, Herzeleid, which unfortunately was the reason why they couldn't call their thoird album the same. Not only did there exist a record with that very name out in the world, but it was even by them selves! No luck ;,D
I listened to the (English) audibook of his newest book, where he takes us on the journey of performing on a Rammstein concert, while remeniscing about various stories of the band. He's a really good writer, and cracked me up more than once ;D There is a video of him reading out loud to an audience, and you can hear them laughing.
And Paul got in =D He even got in before Flake, he was the last to join. He was sceptical at first, worried it was too boring! XD

  • @StineFL
    @StineFL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

With regards to Richard, he's been very open about personal issues and the struggle of depression, after a rough upbringing where he didn't really felt loved by his mother. This has led him to feel like he's only worth something when he's successful or created something, as well as letting people know that he exists (something that he mentions here in this video).
Here's the link to an interview from 2010 if you want to hear him speak about it. th-cam.com/video/7Wq-39iJSE8/w-d-xo.html
Also, with regards to the very accurate observation of Richard ALWAYS smoking, check out the end of concert in Tampere, Finland, last year. It's the same part of the show that I mentioned (and maybe linked) earlier, but this one's from a better angle. You have to skip ahead to avoid getting the end of the song Ich Will spoiled, 1:21 if you want to see the last drum solo, or 2:20 if you just want to see the exit. They make quite the grand farewell, set to the piano version of Sonne. This one is pretty short and would be really fun to see a reaction for! :D

Thank you for your Reaction. I've seen this making-of a few times, but your comment showed me some statements that I didn't even realize before.
The boxer was the Ukrainian heavyweight boxing world champion Vitali Klitschko. In the end, the song was probably too heavy for them, so they rejected it and used AC/DC with Hells Bells.
It's interesting to see that the band was still so relaxed at the end of the video shoot. Flake wrote in one of his books that they were pressed for time to get the plane to the Big Day Out tour in Australia. That's why on the plane they were not yet completely removed their makeup and still had black colors in their hair, so that they heavily soiled the seats on the plane. The German airline that flew the band to the U.S. was still fine with it, but there was reportedly major trouble with the American (or Australian) airline.

"Mutter" is really special for me, because it's the first R+ album that I bought with my own money. I think about their newest material, their relationship with each other, and how far they've come as a band and as individuals since this point, and I always think about how they nearly broke up during the recording of "Mutter". You can hear it in how all over the place and experimental their sound is in this album compared to Sehnsucht and Herzeleid. Then, every album afterwards, it's like things gelled into a more cohesive, purposeful sound, even when they've chosen to do different or unexpected things. Thanks for doing the reactions to the makings-of! Really insightful and cool content that I wish more people got to see.

I hope you'll enjoy the trip over the next few weeks! (you already made Mein Herz brennt who was the first song of the album, even if they made the video 10 years later)
