I like it very much!! Sometimes as artisans we are our worst critic. We have it in our minds what it's "supposed" to look like. Yet many times how it actually turns out... IS how it's supposed to be. ☺️ wonderful!
Sometimes I put my garments in an oven at around between 150 (F) for about 30-45 minutes. The idea is that the water will evaporate faster and create interesting diffusion/osmosis effects, and that the higher temperature enhances titration effects. (I had been thinking about how tie dye is chemistry, and that in chemistry class back in the day, titrate and colors effects were affected by temperature)

I recently had a similar experience. I had done a dye using liquid dye for a peace sign and then decided to do ice dye for the rest. The colors came out super muted in the ice dye part. I know some people like that but I do prefer more vibrant colors. (I later re-dyed and it turned out really nice.) The thing I didn't do was put it on much of incline, add soda ash to the ice dye, and I think my color choices didn't blend well. It was also a very hot day and the ice may have evaporated some and not pulled the color though. I did a similar dye recently and I put dark on the back side first, ice dyed (not incline) flipped it over and did colors on the front. It turned out great.

I love the colors you chose and the results, intended or not. Especially the blue focal point in the upper center front. I did not know Gildan had a new style, think I'll stick to the old. For my own personal style, I'd cut off about the bottom 25% of the shirt and call it perfect. You are truly inspiring in your willingness to experiment, to fail, and to shine. May you thrive.
The new silver tag Gildan G200/G500 shirts aren't an option - they replaced the old white tag G200/G500. The best Gildan options I've found to dodge the silver tags is to go with the SoftStyle or Hammer series.

I saw one video where the artist sprinkled additional soda ash over the dyes for the second round of icing. She said that she wanted to be sure there was enough soda ash present so the dyes could react. I guess the first icing rinses away some of the soda ash. She also let her shirts (after tying) get pretty dry before she sprinkled dye then ice; and she also sprinkled a neutral color (ecru) over the ice. It was a lovely effect. Your shirt is definitely gorgeous and although you expected something different in areas, the results are beautiful.
The over-whelming majority of time I add extra soda ash between ice layers/cycles. I've tried to include that step in all of the videos over the past year or so; but, sometimes I forget. My brain is far from what it used to be.

Love the variety on this shirt - some sharp & bright, areas of blur, and all falls down. Wonder what a darker color at the fall area with a couple colors that "like" each other - violet, navy, forest?
Looks rad most dont pay attention to the the shoulders.
I follow your tutorials to make my own tie dye. And it seems that with incline ice dye if the shirt is still moist, all through, the colors after rinse and wash are quite a bit more brilliant.
Then again it might be that i am using a ton more powder dye from Dahrma.

Ice dyeing almost always results in greater saturation than liquid dye. If you want similar saturation with liquid dye, you'll need to thicken the dye or add 2-3x the recommended powder when mixing the liquid. But, even then, I'd argue that ice dye has depth that's not possible with liquid dye.
I really like the faded pastel coloring! I think more soda ash may have amped the color intensity overall but honestly, that is cool.

First off you are a huge inspiration for tie dyers new and old!. I picked up tie dying during quarantine, ive always been artistic but this was a new way to express myself in that matter. Also im a giant hippy and love tie dyes in general and love creating them even more!!! Now my question is when do you know that it will be beneficial to really tighten the sinew or kind of let it be a little loose? I have notices taht getting it really tight can create really attractive negative space, I have also seen it have an adverse effect and be detrimental toward what you are working towards. Thanks for any feedback in advance!!

Basically, it's exactly like you said. If you want to add more negative space/white areas/white lines - you pull the sinew tight. If you're looking for more fluid/organic results, you pull it loosely so that the dye is confined (partially or completely) to specific locations. If you're unsure which direction you want to go when you start, you can always make one of each to see which result you prefer.
If you dont need to pull the sinew as tight as you can, i would use Kite String. IMO its a waste of sinew if you dont pull it tight
It is pastel at the top because of gravity and the incline. You put dye and ice up there, but the water pulled the dyes mostly down the shirt. The water pulled the dyes down and it didn't "set" long enough up there at the saturation you're accustomed to. Just a thought.
I've made many, many others like this and they saturate properly even on an incline. This appears to be due to the inconsistent quality of the new silver tag Gildan G200 shirts.
I really like the technique you used. I've only done ice dyeing with a huge pile of ice and squirting dye stock on it. This gets the look of ice dyeing without using half a bag. I wonder if the non-saturated section you point out only got hit with highly ice-diluted dye, so it didn't have the vibrant color you were looking for.
With regards to the amount of dye used for ice dyeing, most people greatly over-estimate my dye usage. The spoon in the videos is a baby food spoon -- approximately 1/4 teaspoon in volume. And, my average dye usage is less than 50 cents of dye per XL shirt.
After a fair bit of testing with the new silver tag Gildan G200 shirts, it appears that the shirts are likely the culprit. Some of the shirts take dye in irregular ways and are not consistent like that of the white tag Gildan G200 that were previously available.

Oh mine looked nothing like this! If Dharma sold a dye called ‘Mud Pie Mess’, that’d be mine. Think I overdid the dye powder and also folded up the bottom half too tight so I had distinct bands. I’ll wear it and try again, next time in the guttering I forgot I had 🙄

Do you ever mix the soda ash in with the dyes? It makes it easier to apply. The HWI people do that.
No, I haven't. I doubt it would work with how I typically do things due to a few reasons:
1) I have a tendency to change/add color frequently when dyeing. So, any prep I did with pulling out dye and mixing it in separate containers with soda ash would either be wasted time or time I'd have to reset and then go back to the actual dye step.
2) I don't like to do a lot of prep. That's why I prefer ice dyeing -- no prep is needed setting up all the bottles, mixing, guess how much I might use/what colors/etc. I can change on the fly with ice dyeing. I have a very narrow range of time I can do the work when I feel my brain is going to cooperate with me.
3) I've seen some people mix up larger quantities with soda ash and just pull from it when they HWI. That's a really bad idea as any moisture that infiltrates into the container is going to activate the dye in the container and it will no longer provide saturated results when used at a later date. So, the only option is a complete prep of all the colors with soda ash immediately before dyeing - especially in a humid environment.
@@CasualCollisions I gave your reply some thought. I haven't been doing tie-dye for long; only 6 months, so I am still finding my way. I am full time in art and design, so this was my project during the quarantine and now I don't have a lot of time for prep either. I found liquid dye as wasteful and took time to mix ahead of time, you need to use the dye in a small window or it goes bad. Ice dye takes time melting but affords the most variation for results that I can see. You do an excellent job demonstrating many dyeing techniques and folds for what you do. It shows that you are into ice dye. I have been playing with HWI, but I don't find the colors as vibrant as either liquid or ice. I started doing variations of Low immersion using syringes of warm soda ash water to activate and then finishing with 140 degrees plain water. That's where I use the soda and powered dyes together. I found some plastic disposable snack cups to mix just enough dyes and SA(basically 2 to 1) for about two shirts. I always keep the lids snapped on to keep out moisture and if they get wet; I only lose a small amount of dye. I do like the ease of the dye and SA because they do not clump as much and there isn't as much dye used...better control on fussier dye lays. Thank you for your excellent instruction videos. They have been very helpful. I appreciate your experiments and that you are doing some designs on the fly and then do a great critique of your own work. THX.

But, the small Jacquard bottles are much more expensive than larger quantities from Dharma, Custom Colours, and Grateful Dyes -- unless you only plan to dye a small number of shirts.

It reminds of a Monet painting. I really like it. I’ve seen a couple videos where the shirt is soaked in soda ash, then the dye is added and a sprinkle of soda ash on top of that and then the ice. Do you think that would make the colors more vivid?
If a second round of ice is added, a second round of soda ash is best to maintain saturation. But, after working with these new silver tag Gildan shirts, it's become clear that this specific series of shirts (silver tag G200) has quite a few issues. They have odd dye retention issues at times and they are not cut as square as they were previously.
Casual Collisions thanks for that tip. I was looking on Amazon this morning for Gildan shirts and saw 3 different types. Heavy cotton, a light weight version 95% cotton 5% spandex and this performance series you mentioned. I was wondering about the 5% spandex affecting the dyes. Since I’m new to tie dye the heavy cotton is much harder to fold for me. Do you know if the 5% spandex will create issues?

No, it's been a periodic issue with the new silver tag Gildan shirts. The response I've received when I complained was basically a, "Suppliers and production changes over time. You might want to try another series of shirt." And, based on other complaints I've found online, it's an ongoing issue with the new silver tags.
I love your videos! If I could make one suggestion it would be for the ending of the videos to have more of a “reveal” if you will, vs just showing it on a white background for a minute. I only say that because that’s my favorite part of tie dyes just seeing all the different colors, front and back after I rinse it out. I need that satisfying moment lol. Please keep up these amazing videos I can’t wait to try them all myself!! 🌈

Sometimes I show extra soda ash being applied between ice layers on video, sometimes I don't show it on video, and other times I completely forgot. I couldn't even begin to tell you if it was applied to this shirt or not.
But why more soda ash? The extra soda ash does nothing for it. I've tried it a couple times and never saw a difference.

I love the very top, but I don't like the upper middle where it seems like complementary colors blended and made that brownish-mustardy color. I think if I did it I would stick to an analogous color scheme ( like blue-purple-magenta) so that even if they blended, it would not make brown.
Brown isn’t bad. In oil painting you find an entire universe of variation in browns..bluish, greenish, violet, purple, it’s an amazing color like all the rest.

"I don't like it" is a statement about me and my feelings, but makes no value judgement about the thing itself. I realize 90% of the internet is not clear on that distinction.
That’s a sophistry. You are implying that the blending is a mistake to make brown, and in tie dye this is a well worn trope that blends that make brown are “bad.” Brown is not a mistake, or bad, and need not be criticized as it has a place on the color wheel like all others. It has a subtlety and complexity to be explored, not demeaned. Just because you “don’t like” a color doesn’t mean it’s a mistake to be avoided.

The video asked if we liked the result and I said which part I liked and which part I didn't like. That's it. I have intentionally dyed things brown. I own brown dye. I am not "anti-brown" if that even exists as a thing? I just don't care for the center of this particular shirt.

I’ve wondered too why some shirts turn out with sharp, clean lines, others seem a bit faded. One shirt I put sodium sulfate (Glauber salts) sprinkles on was extra vibrant, yet another was not, same with random applications of extra soda ash at various points. I’m thinking it won’t hurt to apply dyes, then extra soda ash to keep the melting ice from lowering the pH. Maximillian tie dye is a student of Timofey Malaryov, his spiral ice dyes are so sharp..I’m really interested in duplicating..I’ll find a link..

@@johncspine2787 I looked at some of Maximillian's pictures. I think he's figured out some soft of a machine or tool to do his swirls. I've seen forks or tongs used to spin them and plastic covers to help sort the pleats. I'd like to figure that out. All of his swirls seem to go the same direction and they are SO uniform it's amazing, he has a couple of pictures of what it looks like before dying. I'll look for Timofey as well, very interesting stuff!
Here’s a link showing this technique..the “super spiral”. You can put 20-23 pleats for a great shirt, or as many as you want. More pleats though it’s thinner and harder to mainytain shape. Too few, the shirt has a very pronounced cup shape. Dye from the flat side..

Cool as shit dude! I've never tried that technique. Could room temp have anything to do with saturation? (Fast or slow melt times) On the second side did you do random placement of dye or match the first side? Yer videos are very well done :-)
I think you are supposed to sprinkle the powder onto the ice...that is kind of the point for ice dyeing
The point of ice dyeing is to allow the dye that's used to split into its component colors adding additional color-depth to the design.
If you place the dye over the ice, the dye will split and fall onto the fabric within a fairly large area around the location it's initially placed; because of it's movement through the ice. However, if you place the dye under the ice - directly onto the fabric - you can keep more precise lines of color and maintain patterns while still achieving the goal of the dye splitting into it's component colors.
I personally prefer the final result of placing the dye under the ice for most of my work. I switch to dye over ice for some specific patterns when the more organic result of that method is what I'm trying to achieve.
I have a video comparing the two methods -- over versus under the ice -- and it's scheduled to be posted within the next 1-2 weeks.

I watched other vidz from a lady *cant remember her page name* but she also uses dharma....she usually adds extra soda ash when doing ice n her colors are always on point so u can try that...idk..#amateur
I use extra soda ash on about 90% or so of my work - adding it between each additional ice cycle. The rest of the time I either forget or opt not to to create a more pastel result due to viewer/customer request.

It is almost certainly due to the specific shirts you are using.
The new Gildan Silver label Tees have issues with consistently reliable quality... a small portion of the shirts you get in a batch of shirts will resist the dye like this... some will even come out with noticable lines of polyester in the shirts.
It really sucks that Gildan has become unreliable now☹
I recorded this video back in the Spring; but, yes - the silver tags have several issues compared to the previous white tags. I've been trying several other Gildan styles and the SoftStyle and Hammer are providing quality results like that of the older white tag G200s. SoftStyle is thinner than I typical like; but, they saturate well and they're soft.... So, they might become my new top choice. The Hammer is good; but, it doesn't seem to allow as much color saturation - which is odd since it's a thicker material.
