catalytic converter and alternator back to back. $3000 USD. 2008 Voodoo Blue with 112K miles. Windshield was replaced twice. Battery twice (every 7 yrs).
Transmission, radiator hose, battery clamp, all the bearings, some part of the frame near the wheels, and lord knows whatever else the dealership charged me. I basically bought a second fj in my repairs. I sincerely desire to expire.
Bro, I have just started to look at FJs, I am currently in a state of searching and gathering information only, but ... your FJ is just perfect. Manual, slightly lifted, tasteful ... I love it. You just earned another subscriber. Thank you!!!
I had a 2008 FJ, bright yellow (we called it the short bus). Owned it 6 years never had anything break on it with 60,000 miles. I lived in Seattle and I would pick up my coworkers when the weather was bad. Now I own a 2007 FJ. I bought it in 2018 and it only had 50,000 miles on it. 6-speed manual. Not even a scratch on the skid plate. It's so reliable and fun to drive. Where I live now, every day is an offroad adventure.
Thank you very much for producing this TH-cam. I walked out of an Olympia, Washington, USA dealership last night with a 2014 FJ Cruiser. Excited to use TH-cams like yours to keep ahead of things. The drive home to Seattle last night was made fun BECAUSE of the horrendous weather we were enjoying. Cheers to you!
Don’t forget about the bearings and axle seals! I also recommend upgrading the exhaust. It bends easily off-roading. An additional comment on the windshield.... don’t use aftermarket glass and definitely replace the upper trim shield with the windshield. FJs rock!
I've had mine replaced four times (2010). Original trim shield still in place with no problems. Now if someone could perfect a "rubberized" windshield.
For the 2010 - 2014 FJ's, the transfer case and transmission breathers were extended into the engine bay next to the battery. But they left the rear diff and e-locker breathers the same. The only troublesome part I've had on my 2012 TT is the MG/CLT relay, which I've had to replace twice. Another annoying thing is the drive shaft slip yoke. It has a tendency to stick. So when you come to a stop, when it lets go you get a feeling like you've been bumped from behind. The solution is to keep the slip yoke well greased.
I've got ~210,000+ miles and I tow a full-sized trailer with mine. When I bought it, it came with the steering wheel fluid leaking. I fixed it the same week. Since then, the only thing that's "broken" is the headlamps and one of my battery fuses rusted and needed replacing. I did my brakes once in 2021. That's about it. Not a single rattle or squeak. I think my FJ is a starfish and repairs himself so as not to inconvenience me. 🥰 But also I regularly do full checks at the mechanic and tell them to fix anything they find broken. They get so excited but then never find anything. 😅 Happy travels!
Your steering wheel chatter is a result of the needle bearings being worn out inside the front differential where the cv axles enter the front diff. There is a replacement kit from East Coast Gear Supply which replaces them with needle bearing replacement sleeves. Be sure to get the needle bearing removal tool and sleeve install tool. Info is on ECGS website. This would also be a great time to upgrade the cx axle inner boots with heavy duty ones. Can all be done in a day in the driveway.
I’ve been catching up on some if you’re videos and it’s making me so pumped to start working on our FJ! Except now I feel like I have so many questions of your opinion on certain things lol keep it up! It’s entertaining and I love the video quality!
Steering wheel chatter was built in the original FJ's so your wrists didn't get belted to pieces on gravel roads. The short wheel based cruisers of the 70's an 80's were the same. It makes them fun to drive
2007 FJ. 310,000KM currently. Only owned it for 2 years. Failures: Alternator - died when backing into my driveway, pretty easy replacement done by myself in the driveway for a couple hundred $. Seized brake calipers - front and rear, at different times. Sway bar bushings. Transmission 'shudder' - partial flush on the trans fluid and added 'anti-shudder' additive. Passenger side CV boot torn, replaced both inner and outer boots myself with factory Toyota boots. Replaced (what appeared to be original) shocks with Bilstein 5100's - much better ride, and added a 1" lift while at it - shocks hadn't failed, but at 300,000+KM on them, it was time.
Drivers seat height adjustment leaks off every week or so. 2012 with less than 60k miles on the clock. Oil changes and windshield replacement so far. Second hand cream puff out of Scottsdale, AZ
You can do it! I was daydreaming in the back of a Honda Fit. I’m 8 years into ownership with over 100,000 miles and it’s never been on a tow truck or left me stranded. Such a predictable vehicle, and very capable off-road bone stock with some all terrain tires.
Just paid off my Toyota X-Runner. I been thinking of getting a 4x4 vehicle. Of course I gotta go with the FJ. Buying my first home before I can purchase my FJ. Thank You for the video, now I know what to keep an eye out for.
The Lean is normal when you lifted it you needed to add 1/4 spacer on drivers side strut tower. This takes the lean out. When ony the driver is in vehicle and the gas tank right under the driver you have more weight on that side. You can buy lift springs and the good ones will have 1 spring a little taller to compensate for the lean. I own a 2010 in iceburg white myself. Great rigs.

Hey man. Nice video! Love the FJ content. I have an 07 FJ myself with 220k miles (about 354k km). Bought it used with 140k on the clock. So far it's been ridiculously reliable for me. I maintain it meticulously and do my own fluid/ oil changes and spark plugs. I've had a few things break/go bad for me. Including: power steering pump (twice), rear diff bearings, brakes (twice), wheel bearing, serpentine belt, windshield (three times 😬), aaaand my transfer case needed replacing. Honestly a pretty low maintenance rig given the maintenance. The transfer case replacement was unexpected, but I guess it got contaminated somehow? Hopefully the engine and transmission last a while with good maintenance. Trying to get this beast to 300k miles. And yeah, I'd love to see an in depth vid on the diff breathers. Been wanting to do that mod since moving to the pacific northwest. Cheers 🍻
Thanks for sharing the maintenance history of your machine! Good to know some things to be looking out for. And yes - I'll have to put together a video for that!
I've had my 07 FJ for about 30K mi over the last 3 years. I've done the batter, breaks(all 4 caliper, rotor, pads), steering universal joint (stupid rust), tires and oil changes. The dealer had just replaced the rear axle gear set and locker. The cars reliability is just boring. I took it on a 600 mile trip with 150 miles of off roading and it never complained even a little. Although I was very over loaded and probably will need a set of wheel bearings a bit early in the back. But that's totally my fault.
It’s funny lol I have a Toyota RAV4 and I’ve always noticed it tilts more on the drivers side and I’ve always said the same thing. I’m like, I really need to lose weight 😆 good video and loved the music!
New sub to your channel, enjoy your content. I’ve got a 2010 base model but with all the 4x4 options. Only thing I’ve done is LED’s all the way around, 2” leveling kit, and 33” tires. Other than being on my 3rd windshield nothing has broke yet. Knock on wood, only has 89,000 miles also. Also dropped transfer case slightly so CV boots shouldn’t come apart.
For "steering wheel chatter", there's a little plastic pin that keeps upper column true with lower column. The reason for the plastic pin is due to safety. In the event of a collision, this pin is sheared, and the steering column is designed to collapse in on itself. You might have inadvertently sheared it by turning the wheel without assist of power steering. I made this mistake on mine when working on the car. You can either replace the column, have yours spot welded, or live with it. 🙂
I never got a chip in my windshield, but Shen I traded my original FH, I bought a Mercedes Vito, with a giant windscreen. I cracked it in the first week of ownership and put a new shield in every year. That weird design gives amazing sun protection here in Oz. I bake in the Vito. I now have another FJ (paid more in 2022 with 150 000 than I did in 2016 new) and loving the shade driving out west.
Appreciate the heads up here. I have a 2013 and only go offroad in the winter. No lift. So far l is well not I do use 4WD and crawl control just to keep it working. Thanks again Now subscribed Goderich ON
I bought a 2008 FJ 6 speed mauel and it is by far the best car I have ever owned ! I bought it new now has 250,000 miles and runs like a champ ! I only run sythetic oil in it !
Got my 07 with 200,000 kms on it. Ive now got it up to 345 xxx. Mechanics were shocked when they saw how good of condition it is in. Only downside ,, frame rust -_-. Had to replace my exhaust, both front and rear brakes, ac compressor and lifted the front 2.5 inch attached a 3/4 inch disc on top of the driver side puck and it leveled that driver side dip.
Yeah frame rust is a big issue on these things if you live in the salt belt. A lot of the ones i looked at in Canada were pretty full of rust, I'm lucky with my find!
Just picked up a silver 07 and I absolutely love it! These things are built like a tank. Front passenger side seat belt retractor just died. Ordered a replacement assembly for $400 ouch,
Toyota has not updated their replacement part for the belt kit based on previous recall - Dealer notification remedy. Updated belt kit part only cost $140CDN and was very easy to install. Had my front driver seat belt kit replaced last year.
The surprising one I ran in to is the wheel studs. They are super soft metal. I snapped one off hand tighting, then looked at the rest and several others were elongate. they can be replaced with modified lexus studs; but, strange to build such a great off-road machine and cheap-out on the studs.
Just hit 200k on my fj and from your list I have replaced: Both upper and Lower control arms (factory) both front break calipers ( factory) , wheels and tires ( 33 on bfg's) windshield. Besides that regular maintenance and abuse.almost forgot, replaced the exhaust due to offroading fun day. Now I am concern about the front bumper noise you mentioned..
Only thing that has worn out so far was my steering kingpin shaft thing, FJ only had 45k KM on it. I've owned it since new (2014) and that was only thing that failed, I'm at 98k KM now and nothing else has been changed other then Oils and a new set of tires 3 months ago. Bonus is I haven't lost a penny on it yet value and mechanically wise.
My radiator started to leak. Replaced it. Driver door lock actuator died going to replace that soon. Other then that my 2007 FJ Cruiser runs drives and looks like it’s a about 2 years old. Just a baby FJ with 170000 miles. 👍🏻. Enjoyed the video.
@@stokedtour so true. (One more thing) I noticed some grease seeping from the CV axle. I cleaned it and sprayed it with some AT205 reseal. It stopped leaking. 👍🏻
My FJ kinda has that steering clunk/clatter shit and when going over bumps it gets knocked around. Kinda like a bad tie rod but my tie rods are fine. I ordered the upper and lower intermediate steering shaft parts which should be the fix. I would look at those.
I got an fj, got this annoying shaking sound that I can figure out where it’s coming from and it happens when I pass a spear bump or sometimes when I’m above 80km/hr… and I also got an oil pressure alert light on after servicing the car… ( I changed the oil filter again and it went off after a while
Ahh you actually have to pull the mirror out of the casing first, and then you can access the light from behind. You can do this with prying tools - the mirror is "clipped into place" so it should just pop off with the right angle - good luck!
hey dude cool video I've had my fj for about 8 years in September can't complain the only one time it died on me was in my own garage it was the battery but after 5 years but that was my fault for taking to long to change it but from there no problem the only things that I've changes is the oil ,the time belt ,brakes, oh the back door wouldn't open but besides that can't complain it's been pretty good to me I'm a us citizen that lives in Mexico so I come back and forth every day for work 😊
they have lean cause the fuel tank battery steering and brakes components are all on the drivers side. fj even has left and right specific springs but that apparently isn’t enough. my 4th gen 4runner which is identical to the fj had lean. fixed it with coilovers and small rear spacer
I'm having a horrible, almost metal on metal rubbing sound at the rear of my 07 FJ. I think it's the body mount on the side of the frame by the rear bumper. Everything else seems to be in good shape, and yes, I hate the body lean to the driver side. People always ask me if I was in an accident.
Great video. Just bought an '08 FJ. Going to be sealing the roof rack track cause it's leaking... Lots of good videos out there for the repair so maybe just a mention in your next video.
Have a question, I have a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser two wheel drive automatic and the ABS and the differential light came on when driving on freeway and won't turn off back wheel skids when I turn under 10 miles, I changed the ABS speed sensors and the wire for the speed sensors on the back nothing ABS lights are still on I did run into some heavy mud-puddles when it was raining. Any ideas?😢
I bought my 2011 FJ from a private dealer at 96k miles and i’m at 120k now, it looks like the guy had some aftermarket old man emu shocks installed but idk how much the vehicle is lifted. Upper and lower control arm ball joints as well as outer tie rod ball joints do i need to replace my upper control arms with more length?
2009 fj manual. Love it. About 150k miles no major problems ....yet. anyone know what the clunk type noise is when i back up is? Happened on my 2000 tacoma manual 4x4 also. Thanks and love your videos.
As a 50 year mechanic I would wager it's simply a universal joint! Sometimes they can be hard to diagnose if you can't easily get to them to apply torque left, and right to see "slack/movement" there should be none!
i have 2007 manual fj and the transfer case lever won't even shift into low gear no matter how hard you try and shift it it won't move, any idea on why that is
Add the fender well plastic skirts. They suck and WILL fail. Mine have all crumbled. The window trim/seals also suck and will crumble. I've replaced those.
@@stokedtour haha I bet it is a popular request. I didn’t even finished my sentence. I meant to say I’d love to see how those switches are tapped/wired up.
On the 1980s F100s they all had an extra shim on the outside side of the shocks to make up for the camber of the road. Is was only 1/2 inch and bareley noticable but on the flat concrete you could just pick it.
I have an 07 with 172xxx miles. Only thing so far is at low speeds I feel a shutter under acceleration. My buddy's 08 4runner dose the same thing! And info?
The early autos have torque converter problems if you don't 1) follow transmission maintenance and 2) add a transmission cooler. For some reason Toyota didn't add an aux cooler and it allows the trans to overheat
I've got a 3rd gen 4runner, but I love Toyotas; therefore, I subscribed! I just got some rebuilding the entire front-end! Newer version SPC UCA's, and Dobinsons IMS shocks and their tallest springs, because I plan to upgrade all the bumpers and ad new sliders. I replaced the lower ball joints 1st, then the LCA's bushings with Whiteline. I also replaced the steering rack, and sway bar bushing with Energy Suspension. After this I plan on rebuilding the rear-end suspension, but need some time... 2 days of non-stop work at it feels as if all 7 dwarves beat the shit out of me with clubs for hours! The LCA's bushings and fitting the washers really kicked my ass! It looks funny to as the front-end is up like a bro-dozer. Lol It will level out nicely when the rear lift is done. Thank you for your content and great sense of humor! Go anywhere! 🛣🏞🗻🏕🏖🏜🌄🌌
haha thanks! Totally hear you on the LCA bushings lol, that took me a full day to deal with, and then another week to figure out my alignment hahaha. Sounds like a solid build on the 4runner - i absolutely love the 3rd gens ✌
Hit a curb with my rear wheel in the passenger side, normal turning speed and i dont see any visible damages, should i be worried or have it checked? Thank you
What a saga man… I have a 2010 manual in Colorado and I let out a solid HAH!!! at the 4Lo comment. Never lifted it… secret to my callous disregard for suspension parts and a harmonious existence. Love the content tho, and I just ran into the thing about A-trac + Diff Lock - why the hell did they just omit the button? Dirty bastards.
👍 and subbed Your funny as bro! 😎 Loved the video, this is the first one I found thankfully and can’t wait to watch the rest. I have a 2012 model And just ticked over 183000km best cars ever! Take care, can’t wait to see more content, thank you for taking the time to make the videos 👏
My steering wheel chattered like that, but while driving. I rebalanced all 4 tires and it went away. I've never had it chatter like yours while not in motion.
Steering wheel chatter is probably caused by worn tie rods, steering shaft coupler, or the steering u-joint. Any one of these three are likely causing your issue.
Just bought a 2007 fj and have to replace the clutch. I know it's the slave cylinder that has been told to just replace it but going to be there. Why not replace it.
I have a 09 automatic with 130000 km. My issues were, rear ring and pinion blow in a simple snow surface, very common failure as I know in the, alternator and starter. It is using 33" and 3" lift.
Bought my 2012 green FJ new with 5 miles on it, has 85,000 now. One windshield One battery Front brakes Set of tires And wiper blades a few times( desert heat is not kind to them) Plus normal maintenance
Summary of the video, when not modding or lifting the FJ, typically the main issues that could go wrong is brake calipers seizing and transmission shake (usually fixed with a fluid drain and refill). Napa has a lifetime warranty on their calipers, just make sure you hang onto the receipt. For the transmission it is better to drain and refill bit more frequently so you possibly won’t run into the issue.
What's the most recent thing that you had to fix/replace??
Wheel bearings both front wheels and a new serpentine belt.
Windshield, after accumulating 8 rock chips
catalytic converter and alternator back to back.

I bought a 2008 FJ 6 speed mauel and it is by far the best car I have ever owned ! I bought it new now has 250,000 miles and runs like a champ ! I only run sythetic oil in it !
diff drop def helped my inner CV boot
Just hit 200k on my fj and from your list I have replaced:
Both upper and Lower control arms (factory) both front break calipers ( factory) , wheels and tires ( 33 on bfg's) windshield. Besides that regular maintenance and abuse.almost forgot, replaced the exhaust due to offroading fun day.
Now I am concern about the front bumper noise you mentioned..
The little bumper noise is harmless! It was just annoying me, that was all haha
I love seeing these kinds of comments roll in to confirm my hunch that these things are invincible ✌ Happy to hear that for yours!
Honestly it is mind blowing how reliable the FJ is 🤯
@@stokedtour so true. (One more thing) I noticed some grease seeping from the CV axle. I cleaned it and sprayed it with some AT205 reseal. It stopped leaking. 👍🏻
Hello, great video, can you share a link to your front accessory bumper?
Ahhh. the 'Toyota Tilt' the battery, gas tank and driver all on the left hand side. Mine is 2010/180 and still bad ass!
My FJ kinda has that steering clunk/clatter shit and when going over bumps it gets knocked around. Kinda like a bad tie rod but my tie rods are fine. I ordered the upper and lower intermediate steering shaft parts which should be the fix. I would look at those.
Great video, thanks! I have a 2008 FJ with 209,000 miles on it. It’s been a solid machine but I have some wearing parts that need replaceing!
Glad you enjoyed it! These things last forever
I got an fj, got this annoying shaking sound that I can figure out where it’s coming from and it happens when I pass a spear bump or sometimes when I’m above 80km/hr… and I also got an oil pressure alert light on after servicing the car… ( I changed the oil filter again and it went off after a while
do you ever replace the transmission fluid, my one is 13model and AT, raed a few comments about do or not do, any clue?
It would be a very "good" idea to replace the AT fluid every 50,000 miles!
I have the same one as you ....The light on the mirror doesn’t work.
How do you change it without breaking the mirror?
Ahh you actually have to pull the mirror out of the casing first, and then you can access the light from behind. You can do this with prying tools - the mirror is "clipped into place" so it should just pop off with the right angle - good luck!
hey dude cool video I've had my fj for about 8 years in September can't complain the only one time it died on me was in my own garage it was the battery but after 5 years but that was my fault for taking to long to change it but from there no problem
the only things that I've changes is the oil ,the time belt ,brakes, oh the back door wouldn't open but besides that can't complain it's been pretty good to me I'm a us citizen that lives in Mexico so I come back and forth every day for work 😊
please do a video for modifying the activation of the Atrac and Lock differencial !
Hope you found it! th-cam.com/video/SE8fxJ3wWAE/w-d-xo.html
@@stokedtour thanks
they have lean cause the fuel tank battery steering and brakes components are all on the drivers side. fj even has left and right specific springs but that apparently isn’t enough. my 4th gen 4runner which is identical to the fj had lean. fixed it with coilovers and small rear spacer
I just love FJ keep on teaching how it works
Thanks, will do!
2009 fj manual. Love it. About 150k miles no major problems ....yet. anyone know what the clunk type noise is when i back up is? Happened on my 2000 tacoma manual 4x4 also. Thanks and love your videos.
Thanks man! And no I don't know about a backup noise...
As a 50 year mechanic I would wager it's simply a universal joint! Sometimes they can be hard to diagnose if you can't easily get to them to apply torque left, and right to see "slack/movement" there should be none!
i have 2007 manual fj and the transfer case lever won't even shift into low gear no matter how hard you try and shift it it won't move, any idea on why that is
There could very well be a small stone caught in between the linkage on top of the shifter?
Add the fender well plastic skirts. They suck and WILL fail. Mine have all crumbled. The window trim/seals also suck and will crumble. I've replaced those.
Thanks for the info ! I'd love to see how those transfer cases switches
Glad it was helpful! Also damn the switches is a popular ask!
@@stokedtour haha I bet it is a popular request. I didn’t even finished my sentence. I meant to say I’d love to see how those switches are tapped/wired up.
@@DK_427 Mod vid is up 👍 th-cam.com/video/SE8fxJ3wWAE/w-d-xo.html
On the 1980s F100s they all had an extra shim on the outside side of the shocks to make up for the camber of the road. Is was only 1/2 inch and bareley noticable but on the flat concrete you could just pick it.
I have an 07 with 172xxx miles. Only thing so far is at low speeds I feel a shutter under acceleration. My buddy's 08 4runner dose the same thing! And info?
I would check the u-joints before anything else!
I changed my driver side wheel bearing after it had gone bad. I hear it's common failure on all large vehicles especially if you go with larger tires.
True, my wheel bearings also went at one point! Yeah i'm sure they wear out faster with larger tires
The early autos have torque converter problems if you don't 1) follow transmission maintenance and 2) add a transmission cooler. For some reason Toyota didn't add an aux cooler and it allows the trans to overheat
Recently bought an 07 FJ automatic. I need to replace the steering rack as the seals are leaking.
I have problems with the passenger side door lock as well as the rear door lock mechanisms.
Pull the door panels off, and lubricate all the mechanical connection points!
The lean is from the gas tank being on that side, will lean more with a full tank.
Hey just FYI my steering wheel has that chatter too! It’s actually a steering shaft bushing and it’s pretty easy to replace
Ooooo thanks for the tip! I'll have to check it out
yes please, breather video !!!
CV boot is the hardest to replace, mainly getting to it to replace
Hoping I don’t have to do a boot replace anytime soon
Glad to see you pulled out! Was worried there for a second.
Dude, I love you man! Great videos! I love Toyota! I have a 20’ Hakone Edition 86 and a 21’ 4RUNNER. Oh what a feeling!
Haha glad you like them!
👍 and subbed
Your funny as bro! 😎
Loved the video, this is the first one I found thankfully and can’t wait to watch the rest. I have a 2012 model
And just ticked over 183000km best cars ever! Take care, can’t wait to see more content, thank you for taking the time to make the videos 👏
Are those JBA upper control arms you’re running
Yessir!
Awesome video thanks! I have a white '11 with 290,000 miles. Maintenance pays for itself in the long run. :)
I need to know how to do them switches!! Please??
Me 2
This is a popular one
Mod vid is up 👍 th-cam.com/video/SE8fxJ3wWAE/w-d-xo.html
Have you had any communication problems with ECU ever ?
2012 Fj no start 😔
I heard the timing cover gasket is a real popular concern. True?
I have not encountered this issue...Anyone want to add?
yes the lean is caused by the fuel tank .... the primary fuel tank ... secondary is at the back
My steering wheel chattered like that, but while driving. I rebalanced all 4 tires and it went away. I've never had it chatter like yours while not in motion.
I will live with this problem forever 🥲
Steering wheel chatter is probably caused by worn tie rods, steering shaft coupler, or the steering u-joint. Any one of these three are likely causing your issue.
Just bought a 2007 fj and have to replace the clutch. I know it's the slave cylinder that has been told to just replace it but going to be there. Why not replace it.
Yes, a video on transfercase switches 😊
Leaning FJ. Looks like you have OME Springs. Old Man EMU springs are handed. Meaning, driver side is taller and marked with an "A".
Could you make a HowTo on all the different gears and when to use them? At what speed? Atrack?
Great points to add!
I have an 07 FJ and the only thing that has given me trouble is the Alternator 178,000 miles and I am on my third.
maybe your fj leans to the left is because some heavy items on the left side like, the battery and the gas tank.
One windshield
One battery
Front brakes
Set of tires
And wiper blades a few times( desert heat is not kind to them)
Plus normal maintenance
Beauty - that's barely anything out of the ordinary!
Love this video, I am now getting know your FJ more . Thanks for sharing 🥰👍👏
Thanks for watching!
Just got my 2013 fj! And iam in love
08 with 206,500 miles it’s a tank with no issues
Just went from Utah to Ensenada Mexico, and back with no issues oh wait two rock chips😢
2008 bought new. Only alternator I had to replace. Will buy a sequoia really soon!
2010 fj trial team 202000 miles - hood latch and gas tank and skeed plate strap and driver belt seat retractor 😍
