  • In this video I show you how to cook my version of a German / Austrian beef goulash. It is absolutely delicious and has a wonderfully rich flavor from the beef combined with a great sweetness from the onions. On top of that, the recipe is super easy to make and only requires a bit of work, when it comes to slicing the onions.

I am an American of German dissent and in my family of nine we grew up,eating our version of goulash, which is basically rouladen turned into a goulash. Cubed beef, bacon, lots of Chopped onions, minced dill pickle, Dijon or spicy brown mustard, and beef stock. Simmered, low and slow until the beef is tinder, thicken the gravy, and serve over, diced boiled potato. It taste exactly like rouladen but in a stew form. We didn’t have very much money growing up and my six brothers ate a lot. Meat was a treat especially beef, that wasn’t ground or minced and my mother was an expert at stretching meat to feed her large family, it was always in casseroles, Chili with lots of beans or spaghetti sauce to make it stretch to feed six hungry teenage boys. We are all now in our 50s and 60s and goulash is one of our favorite comfort foods and is requested by my brothers as their birthday meal, rather than going out. I have a brother whose 59th birthday is in four days and he has requested that I make goulash for him for his birthday present. I’ll make it for him and get him a present.

My husband and I live in Tennessee. However, my husband was born and raised in Hamburg. Goulash is one of his favorite things and I cannot wait to try this recipe for him. Prost!

I love your videos. No hoopla, just good, easy to understand cooking. Your cooking reminds me of my late father's stories about how his old-time German relatives cooked. Keep making videos!

This was so good. It was exactly like the Belle Epoch in Dusseldorf. Exactly what I've been craving.

I learned how to make German Goulash from my grandmother; the recipe of a great many German generations ago. The one "Cardinal Sin" in making this dish was to use any pot that was not cast iron. It was never explained why the cast iron pot was so vital to the recipe, but the look of horror on my grandmother's face when suggesting a stainless pot said it all.

Cover the pot after bringing it to boil? I am following your recipe except for one extra ingredient, sliced carrots.
