You can put female threads in wood (carefully), I do it often, but putting male threads on a wooden dowel with such a fine pitch (M12 is usually 1.5mm pitch). They make lock nuts, lock washers, and thread locking compounds, there's a bunch of ways to lock nuts in place without drilling a hole. If you're going to drill a hole you could at least use a cotter pin instead of a smaller bolt and nut, now you have to worry about the little nut coming off 🙄
@lexingtonconcord8751 it does no good for holding. Dowels are usually glued in and the point of the longitudinal cuts you see in dowels is to allow the glue to escape as you fully seat the dowels. This idea was a failure as you can see the glue rupture the end grain as it squeezes out. If this worked it would have come out the top..
...#1 sweet jesus.... no... never go that straight downwards... aim for inbetween that.... because if you go straight down your now creating a fracture line along the wood grain where a slight bump will cause the wood to just break off. the piece of wood you got might work for that because the grain flows horizontally along the length but if it ever flows vertically you'll end up busting the end of the corner off easily.

Yes thread the dowel. That makes sense.
Pretty sure it's used to make the plug the approximate size easily..yes much of this is silly.
Threading the dowel and the hole created more friction on each surface, which would help hold the dowel better 👍🏻
