Thanks for sharing this video. The extended body looks fantastic. The CDC wing looks great but thorax, wing, eye , head proportions might be better on a shorter shank hook or by moving the extended body tie in point further forward towards the eye of the hook. I'm sure the fish don't care and that you get plenty of takes as from the fishes view, the silhouette of the Fly is spot on! Tight lines!Cheers!

      Thanks for watching.
As you mentioned, fly designed for eye candy (whether for match the hatch or for artisans) and fly for fast shot gun are quite different serving to set goals.
This is a fly shaped into this design in a season between a challenging lake with seasoned trouts and a stock fishery where it was tested on over 100 rainbow trouts.
Cruising/holding trout in deep range, under fishing pressure, needs to identify fly quickly, rise fast, then swallow in one go. Thus the fly needs impressive wing, extended foam tail giving a good tap on surface, and hooking performance in fast strike.
I have tested short shank & curved shank hooks in traditional body proportion as tied by others finding 3 issues during strike:
      - Counter balance to buoyancy
      - Gape match
      - Roll caused by a drag
I won't touch too much detail, but hook has to be the right choice and unnecessary material volume was thinned or trimmed making sure it won't cause a roll which will deflect the hook point unexpectedly.

Nice to watch and easy to follow. Will try and entice a few Kiwi trout with your model, Thanks.

Tokyu Hands now produces EVA sponge sheet beige in 2mm thickness.
If you are fine with the 2mm strength, then that's gonna make it easier:)

So far it never failed cruising trouts and landlocked salmons.

ive tied and used xtended bodies for years,,,i think the fly should be tied on a short shank hook as you left almost half the hook towards the head with nuthing on it but thread..

      Hi termite122.
Could you put a link to the reference to the proportion you use?
I'm looking for any improvement for 2018 edition.
I have used variety of extended pattern myself having issue with success rate in hooking, so this year I reviewed the balance after experimenting different hooks on stocked trout before taking it to the challenging field - which worked very nicely.

@@Tokyoflyfishing add more dubbing to that part, then can also use melted monofilament for the eyes, looks great

      Thanks for the pointer!
The fly works like candy to lure fish up from the deep, but it is still refused by the fish in shallow with plenty of time examining. Thorax and eyes may be an answer:)

@@Tokyoflyfishing yeah hopefully that helps, also experiment with different colors for thorax, may be key to give slightly darker or lighter dub

That has to be accommodated when checking with real hatch - benefit of camper van tying bench next to lake or river.
For instance, 2017 season was cream, but 2018 was light brown and trouts could really tell by turning down at the last inch.

for this kind of dry flies, you should dub a thorax, then fly is better looking and more buoyant.....
