    Thanks for the great review. Arlo Pro2 was my first camera setup and I am constantly frustrated with it consistently missing important footage when motion should be captured or missing footage between back-to-back motion recordings. It seems like the buggy software you mentioned. Do you have this problem with the Ultra?
    The Ultra quality looks so much better but I have serious hesitations about giving Arlo any more of my money.

    Nice review Reed. How is the push notifications on the Ultra camera? I'm deciding on a system for my condo, and I really only need like 1 camera ... or 2 ... facing the front door. I would like to get quick notifications on my cell phone. My Nighthawk router is connected to google fiber, so that is quick. I'm currently testing the new Reolink wireless cameras, but I'm not satisfied with the notifications. Would this Arlo Ultra be a better choice with its dedication hub and all those other features you mention? I am looking for alerts when the condo staff comes in and out of my unit to do their yearly maintenance checks on the water heater and other systems. Thanks!

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Juan! The push notifications have been pretty quick and reliable so far. Also I didn't mention in the video but with the free upgraded plan when you get the arlo ultra is some better alert options. So you can only be notified if it's a person or an animal or both. So far it's worked very well. I only get notified if people are there and not a random bird or something. But those notifications also work on the Arlo Pro cameras as well so you don't need the ultra for that.

      Yes it gives the option in the Low Light Settings. You can have the spotlight not turn on or not use color. You can also have the light stay on during motion, flash or pulsate. Thanks for asking, I should have included that in the video.

  • @ds99
    @ds99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wasn’t understanding the bases on the Pro vs the Ultra. If you have both cameras you need 2 bases. Or you said you could delete the cameras and add them. Do you mean the Arlo and Arlo Pro cameras can work with the Ultra base? I really hate the subscription. The cameras cost a lot. Especially if you have to keep buying the kit every time you upgrade. They should include 5 to 7 days of storage for free seeing as memory and bandwidth is cheap these days. That is a showstopper for me. I like the Arlo Pro mostly because there’s no charge for the 7 days. If I’m going to upgrade to 4K I would expect it to work and not have additional fees. Especially for that kind of money. It’s also strange that the alarm is on the camera and not very loud.
    Thank you for the review. It was an eye opener.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes the Arlo Pro cameras can be added to the Ultra's Smart Hub but you can't add the Ultra to the base station that comes with the Arlo Pro.

    I returned the arlo pro 2. First set I got, cameras kept disconnecting from the base, even though wifi signal was strong. Got it exchanged. Second pair, you could not hear nothing out of the camera speakers. It sounded like you were whispering. After checking online, it seems like arlo has always had an issue with the speaker and 2 way communication all together.

    Do you think these existing Ultra Hubs already have Z-Wave & Zigbee built in but just not activated yet? Can't find anything to confirm that. I bought one partly on that assumption so I can use those features when it goes live... however I've started wondering if that's the case or whether it will be on a new Ultra Hub that will be released later this year. Z-Wave frequencies are region specific (i.e. US / EU / ANZ) so if it is built in to these already I hope that's been taken into account... i.e. I hope because I bought mine in New Zealand that it came with ANZ Z-Wave frequency built in (or the radio frequency police might come knocking with a big fine... no joke they do!).

    Yes. If you enjoy spending your free time on the phone with tech support and troubleshooting, buy Arlo. I have just bought 4 new cameras and have 3 separate open cases for 3 of the 4 new cameras. Then they had the nerve to scoff when I asked for a free year of their monitoring for my time. I’m thinking of buying another camera to watch my house while I’m on the phone w tech support.

    I enjoy my Arlo Ultra especially since I can charge the camera without changing the position of the camera unlike on my Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 camera. I was told that I have to enable the 4k by paying an additional fee. Is that true or is it something I can enable in the app?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point about charging it without changing the position. You have to pay extra for 4k cloud recording but if you want to view it locally on a micro sd card inserted into the smart hub it's not extra. You just have to eject the sd card and plug it into your computer. The ability to view the footage on the micro sd card using the arlo app will come out later in the year.

  • @FalcoINC
    @FalcoINC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned about using video off the SD card but then never showed anything or went in to any detail? I just picked up a Ultra 2 cam kit and something must be wrong. The video looks like its barely 720p on the live feed and the cloud recording. Will need to check the SD card later but if I try and watch the live feed with best video quality and 4K streaming enabled, a persons face is blurry from 5-10 feet away, a licence plate is just a blob. Any zooming in the slightest bit makes a person unrecognizable standing 5-10 feet from the camera. Ill try and double check setting again and see if I can get anything better.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I don't know why the streaming doesn't look great with 4k streaming enabled. Was the footage on your sd card looking good?

    How do you think the Arlo Ultra and Pro 2 would compare to Wyze cameras? I bought and few several months back and can’t understand why anyone would buy anything but Wyze for basic needs. Now if you have a serious full blown system maybe these give you more?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would probably make a good video and I might do that comparison. With Arlo you get that rechargeable battery and weatherproof. If you have an outlet near where you would mount the camera and a cover for your wyze cam then I would use a wyze cam to save money. I don’t have many outlets on the outside of my house so I have to go wireless. But Wyze Cams are the real deal for how inexpensive they are.

    Buyer beware! If you don't have direct connection to a power source (i.e. plugged in) or a subscription plan, this thing won't record to a local storage. This renders the SOLAR PANEL accessory useless so don't buy the accessory at least. It was good for when I had the 3 month trial subscription. The minute I chose not to renew the subscription the cameras became duds as I couldn't do wiring to have the plugged in setup but unfortunately wasted money on the solar panels. My 2 cents!

  • @gpclark007

    What seems remarkable is that camera RANGE is never reviewed. It seems like camera range is as important as resolution. Why am I such a curmudgeon here? Because the Arlo Ultra is so amazingly inferior to any other Arlo camera in terms of RANGE that any review should have discovered this. I'd recommend adding a new metric to your evaluations.

    Why didn't you tell what happens when the year free cloud expires? My understanding is there's no more lifetime fee cloud recording storage, like with the previous Arlos. After the free year with Alro Ultra, it will cost you $120/year for what comes free with Alro, Alro Pro and Alro Pro 2.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arlo is working on allowing you to access the local recordings from your phone anywhere you are. So yes you will need to pay after a year for cloud storage for the Ultra which is disappointing since it's free on the others but you will be able to access the 4k footage for free which is a good compromise in my opinion.

    What a real SHAME that this company is capable of making a better camera than the previous one and make is so incompatible with their on products. That in it self is definitely a deal braker and I will stay away from them.
    Its 4K looks good, so its 180 degree angle but too many incompatibility issues.
    I think they have taken the Sony Action Cam approach on being unnecessarily problematic.
    Thanks for review.

    Was with Arlo - their cameras are really good, but their after sales/technical help is non-existent. Any issues they try & place the blame on the owner, repeating the set up (from the start) many times over. It is one of the WORST companies I have had experience with, & a company is only as good as it's service. The retailer refunded the £'s & they no longer sell Arlo products.

    "Disclaimer: Smart Home Solver received samples of Arlo Ultra, Arlo Pro 2, and Arlo Pro for an unbiased, non-sponsored review."
    While I appreciate that you don't shy away from being critical of hardware based on your experiences, to say this review "not sponsored," is disingenuous at best. The definition of a "sponsor" (per Webster's dictionary) is as follows:
    *SPONSOR (n.):* An individual or organization that pays some or all of the costs involved in staging some event in return for advertising.
    Even if you were a 10 subscriber channel, this video _absolutely_ acts as advertising for Arlo, as I'd never even HEARD of the company prior to Google recommending this video to me in my TH-cam feed, and now I HAVE heard of them, and thus am more likely to think of them while doing my due diligence should I ever choose to buy a wireless home security system in the future. Sure, you didn't take money from them to support an event you're hosting, but they DID essentially pay for this product out of their own pocket (waiving the cost for each of these kits, and given that the Arlo Ultra kit would've cost a standard consumer a little over $800 with taxes _by itself_ at the time you posted the video, that's a lot of money in free hardware you received) all with the express understanding/purpose of _you_ publishing a video detailing your experiences with _their_ hardware (which you otherwise would NOT have been in possession), good, bad, or indifferent.
    Arlo absolutely, unequivocally sponsored this video by sending you the hardware for free. It is objective fact that you are now in possession of over $1,000 in hardware from Arlo (just in the three kits mentioned in the description, above) that you otherwise _would not own,_ and it is that ownership that enabled you to speak on your experiences with the hardware.
    The fact is that you published a video review on hardware that you received _for free, from the manufacturer, with the express understanding that it was being sent to you for the purposes of you publishing a video review _about_ said hardware so that Arlo could reach your 50k+ (at the time you published the video) subscribers. That you were _very_ mildly critical of some of the things you didn't like about these kits (which, again, at the time of the video would've cost you OR any other consumer almost $1,500 USD in total after taxes to purchase) doesn't make it a "non-sponsored" video, and it is dishonest on your part to label it as such.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment and perspective. While it's true we have received samples of these Arlo kits, we would have reviewed Arlo anyways since they are such a large, well-known brand. From my perspective, Webster's dictionary definition of "sponsored" varies from TH-cam's definition.
      For my channel's size, it is extremely rare that we:
      1) Have not ever accepted payment from any brands. Many other TH-camrs charge unboxing fees or sponsorship costs, and do not disclose this in their description.
      2) Include a disclaimer in every video stating the products we received for free. This is to be as transparent as possible. Again, it's quite rare to find another smart home/tech channel that includes this kind of disclaimer.
      I consider this review non-sponsored, because I was not paid by Arlo. As stated in the title, the Arlo Ultra legitimately surprised me. If you want to see another Arlo review of something I received and didn't like so much, here you go: th-cam.com/video/bk4aAniEg6Y/w-d-xo.html
      Companies sending us these review units helps extend our budget for other videos. We could buy this out of our own pocket, but it would set back the channel and our content, and just wouldn't make sense. They send it to us with the agreement that we'll test it and upload our honest opinion. I turn down products that I don't like all of the time to keep this channel trustworthy and honest.

    If it’s in color, it’s NOT IR night vision. So of course the clarity is going to be better than the Pro 2’s night vision 🤦
    In general. Arlo is a COMPLETE RIPOFF! I wasted $400 on a 3 camera set of the Arlo Essentials cameras. Yes, they’re okay cameras. But NOT $400 worth of camera. No cloud without paying, no viewing from a remote location free. There is absolutely NO VALUE to these cameras at all. I was such a huge fan of NetGear. Now I’m ashamed of even purchasing the Arlo cameras. Bye bye $400 and if I had planned on spending bookoos of money for the rest of my life, sure Arlo would be a good way to do it. I just using what I already had. I was already using Geeni cams at one of my properties and was mostly satisfied with them. Now I’m 150% satisfied. I have 11 cameras, smart switches, PTZ cams, door bell cam, Wi-Fi cam flood light. Anything and everything better than the Arlo cam. Best part, for about the same amount of money I had got all that I just mentioned and 15/16 multi-color light bulbs (Wi-Fi connected) and everything I have now is in 1 app and I don’t have to pay for cloud storage if I don’t want to. I can, but I don’t. I get still images free, and the SD card option in my cameras.
    Long story short, Arlo is a Ripoff, and Geeni is the way to go. Period.

      @@bendover-yr4oq running wires is easy, just have to think about it a little. My install looks better than Arlo, and to get the full functionality of your Arlo you have to have it wired in anyway so it's completely pointless. Once swan is installed, no WiFi issue, battery issue cause every time you charge a battery you have to move the camera so then have to set it back up. It's a shit idea
