    Shure B58a has been one of my favorite microphones for decades. This seems to be a very reasonable fill-in for many situations!

    I liked this mic for the electric guitar but for everything else i personally prefer the XM8500, i think it has a warmer, less grainy sound. I think this mic sounds quite harsh, still good value for its price, I just dont think its a versatile as the XM8500.. brilliant review as always 👌🏻

    The Shure is clearly nicer in treble resolution... which is apparently a thing for mics, not just frequency response. So you are buying more sound quality there but that's way way more money. Agree on value, clearly

    • @vampula12
      @vampula12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Metal, it is as such as it is with headphones(it is, actually the same tech, but other way around)
      you buy a freq. response that you prefer in inclosure you like, thats all.(add comfort in headphones case)
      If mics have similar freq. response and indistinguishable in blind test, with same build quality it is NOT worth it to get the one that is more expensive LOGICALLY and ECONOMICALLY.
      Also the trable resolution IS a part of frequency response.
      ALL
      YOU
      HEAR
      IS
      MEASURABLE.
      Stop bullcraping people with this... well you know CRAP that comes from you beeng hypocritical or just hypnotised by imagning some things in your head.
      Zeos clearly had some influence on you for sure.
      It is a shame, I was thinking of you as Tyll's successor, but i see that hes legacy is gone for now...

      The Shure is a PROFESSIONAL Vocal mic intended to be used mostly for music applications for the serious vocalist or by reputable sound professionals. The Behringer is intended to be an obvious "knock off" to appeal to those on a budget. To call it cheaper _replacement_ for the Beta 58A is wrong...it is just a less expensive mic with it's own audio qualities. It would seem Behringer is trying to mislead buyers by making them believe their much cheaper version is the same thing, but it is not. You can hear it.
      I happen to listen to TH-cam through my older Studio Monitors (Genelec 1030A) and I could hear the difference between the two mics on this video, and I find the Behringer a respectable mic, but you could hear that it does not have the same characteristics as the Shure. But here is the thing....in this blogging environment, fidelity is not nearly as important. People listen to pod/vlog casts through headphones, laptop speakers, $12.00 earbuds and $300.00 headphones...some even through studio monitors like me (Genelec 1030A). The goal is to provide a clear and natural sound and certainly the Behringers provide that ability. Put in line with a nice dsp to tailor the audio and little and it would be a nice mic...starting out new with a tight budget...go for it. Serious studio, project work or live sound....buy the right tools for the job.

    • @dylandylan11731
      @dylandylan11731 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RV'n in North Carolina personally, I'd be more concerned with things such as gain before feedback, handling noise, output impedance, reliability and if it still sounds the same after 20 gigs/shows.
      You don't need genelec monitirs to work that out.
      The fact it's ripping another product off, turns me straight off - It could have looked the same as the older xm8500, but if the sonic quality, gain before feedback, handling noise, reliability and what I've mentioned meets expected standards, it's a winner.

    • @rvninnorthcarolina3377
      @rvninnorthcarolina3377 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dylandylan11731 I totally agree with your point. I used to own a Live Sound Company and because of my profession and because of "Equipment riders", bargain gear was not an option and there was a reason for that. Behringer would be better to let the mic stand on its own and not try to ride the coat tales of an awesome mic like the Beta58A....I have Shure SM57, SM58 and Beta58's that I bought 20 years ago. They have been through hundreds of gigs. All I have replaced on them is the wind screens. Some show obvious handling wear but they all perform well after all this time. I kept them just because.......My guess is this mic would not stand up the same. BUT, for the starting out blogger....it seems to be a good choice.

    I don't know how Beringer manages to get away with copying so many designs of just about everything in audio. Fair play to them, its usually not bad stuff so it works out for those of us that would rather spend half the price of the original guitar pedal they ripped off, for example.

    Subscribed, great reviews and expansive in details and technical specs. I am looking for a good deal for a live microphone, and I feel supercardoid seems to work best with my voice, I really like it has some extra volume. I was drawn to this Behringer, because it is a supercadoid and has a rather low to high frequency rage 20 to 18k hz. It sounds good, but since it's for live purposes, I really want to have all the possible noise reduction, especially feedback noise. I am on a budget right now unfortunately, so I wonder if it is possible to mod it to reduce noise reduction. I am really intrigued about microphone designs. If I had the money I think I would go with the shure beta 87A, but that's for more fortunate times. Still looking for a good deal, it's difficult to find microphones second hand, at least where I am from.

    As far as the handling noise is concerned: I chopped off the low end below 90 Hz with a low cut at 72 dB per octave. This almost removed all of the handling, as it’s mainly below said 90 Hz threshold. This also helps a bit with the plosives, tho a clown nose does a better job.

    Great, so the XM8500 is the bottom heavy one and this is the top heavy one, they really just need to develop a more balanced one (and maybe work on a slightly extended range on the top) and they could just sell it as a true allrounder.

    I have a Beta 58A that I use for church solo work. It's quite a bit better than the Behringer in your testing, but for a lot of users it's not 6X better. I find the differences to be worth the extra cash. That said, for just a bit more, the Shure SM48 is a better choice than this Behringer.

    Bandrew, I wonder if you can make a tutorial on how to remove background noise using and EQ?. I know this is off topic, but no matter what I try I cannot remove my noise or you can just recommend a website or book I can study. . For Hand noise rejection, it fails but hey many people could let this mic work for them, could even get some paid gig doing voice overs.

    When recording audio for TH-cam in an untreated room with quite a bit of fan noise. Would you recommend a compressor mic or dynamic mic I can link a TH-cam video for sample audio that helps

      Very open question. Depends on how loud the fan noise is? First rule of thumb would be to reduce the amount of ambient noise in the space. If that is impossible then I would recommend a dynamic vocal mic with a cardioid or super-cardioid pattern. Reason I say Dynamic versus Condenser is that Dynamic mics tend to be less sensitive and would work better in a loud ambient noise environment. They tend to not be as bright but you need noise rejection. You may also want to get a good DSP unit that will allow you to gate the audio so when you are not talking the gain turns down as well as adding features such as vocal compression and EQ.

    The Shure almost sounds too warm for me. I think I actually prefer the Behringer. There is some graininess, but it really just sounds a bit cleaner.

      A few months late, but if you prefer the 85a over the XM8500 go for that, but if you prefer the XM8500 over the 85a, go for that. I include the comparisons in the video so you can decide which one you prefer: th-cam.com/video/6vIY2bEcQOo/w-d-xo.html
      $41 for an XM8500 seems a bit high though. Those are $30 new from some place like Sweetwater, but you can get them for a bit cheaper than that on Amazon.
