Started out bass fishing with 1 pole and 2 or 3 packs of worms 30 years ago and killed ‘em. Thirty poles, $10,000 of tackle, and thirty years of over-thinking every aspect of bass fishing, I decided 3 months ago to fish a Texas rigged worm like I started out with and have been killing ‘em.
I’ve been thinking similarly lately. In the late 70’s as a teenager I had a 5’6” Lew’s speed stick that’s pretty limber and a Diawa millionaire and I was completely happy with it. I fished a Texas rig a lot with a 6” mister twister purple fire tail and caught plenty of fish. Now I’ve got much more stuff and not catching any more than back then. Crazy. I still have that rod but don’t use it anymore.
As a kid I can remember stopping at Brown Derby Liquor Store where Johnny Morris had a small aisle of tackle, on the way to Table Rock for Mister Twister worms. Fishing tackle and Johnny Morris have come a long way since. Brings back some great memories
Great video, I started using worms in 74,all handmade, being a fabricator I figured out how to make a mold, didn't work, but things were cheap,so a machine shop made a dual mold for a 6 and 10 inch beaded worm,I made 3 colors, black, clear and brown,I have no idea how many fish I caught, but I was selling between 100 to 300 a week, no ìnternet, just word of mouth,so fun then!
Can't ever beat a worm! 2 baits I always have tied on every trip all year long is big swimbaits & worms, just different varieties for different situations. I have really started liking the bigger 6 & 7" sencos. They have different look than what everyone else is throwing. All of my 4+ fish have came on big swimbaits & big worms. This summer I did excellent. My pb from last year was 7lb 8oz. Broken my PB 3 times between mid July & late August on those baits 8.05 - 8.6 - & my new PB 9.3! She was 26" long 16.75" in girth. That's her in my profile picture. In fact if I didn't have all pictures to look back at I would think it was all just a handful of good dreams... Also caught 7.4 - 6.1 - 5.10 - 5.8 in that same time span & had one jump off that was noticably larger than my 9.3! That still hurts! Hopefully I can trick her into biting again!??! All of those fish were released immediately & in great condition most importantly! I have a replica being made of my current PB. Same company makes replicas for MLF & bass pro tournament anglers.
Worm fishing…..regardless of the hook used……is my Kryptonite! In all my years of fishing, I have caught 2……yes 2 fish on a worm. It’s another of those “boat only” lures for me. I have Zoom, Big Bite Baits, 6th Sense, GrandeBass, and a dozen more brands of worm in all sizes, but they just don’t get me any bites. I am sure it’s user error, but I’ve asked numerous fishing friends what I need to correct, and they usually give me another brand of worm to try. I’m beginning to think Bass in Kentucky know the worms are not real. Super frustrating fishing with a worm.
I thought I was the only guy that struggles with worms. I’ve tried most colors, sizes, brands, rigs etc. I rarely get any action 🤷♂️. I’ve been watching a guy that does a lot of creek fishing and small river fishing, he uses hellgrammites and does well consistently. I’m gonna give it a shot. He fishes them much faster than I do so maybe that’s my problem, but I’ve always heard that you can’t fish plastics too slow so who knows. Best wishes
I'm going through the same thing up here in Colorado. I have many brands of worms have different sizes, shapes colors, etc. yet ive only caught two fish on worms and two those fish where rainbow trout 🤦♀️
Y'all fishing them worms too fast probably. I fish them very slow here in North Carolina and just watch your line a feel for a tick..... I maybe shake the worm once or twice here and their but most the time Texas rig or Carolina rig I just drag slowly
I grew up fishing Creme worms in purple with a red tail on a straight hook with no weight. It was slow fishing and we caught fish wading super clear Florida lakes. These days I'm a serious supporter of purple worms but I think there is a place for the Junebug colors ones and maybe even the black ones.
Love that speed worm too , do u remember before we had the speed worm , we had the culprit broad tail , it had a paddle tail and I fished it pitching always , but Zoom took the paddle to a whole new level
When I was a kid my dad used Culprit red shad colored curly tail type worms all the time in Florida. That's how I learned to fish with worms, and now that I fish in the saltwater I use a lot of the same techniques for jigs. Jigging for flounder is almost exactly the same, hopping and dragging the bait. I catch a bunch of other stuff trying for flounder. And I would use bass worms for the saltwater but I don't like long baits because of the tail biters, they'd ruin a worm in 5 casts or less. I'm sure the flounder and redfish would bite the long ones. Yesterday I caught a tiny cobia and a little flounder on jerk shads like you use for bass, with an underspin weedless hook. Bass stuff with scent for the saltwater. I will try wacky rigging once ut gets colder and the little fish go away, I bet reds and maybe stripers will hit it.
Randy.... seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on competitive fishing. How many tournaments have you won ? And if you are comfortable with disclosing, maybe a ballpark earnings per year that you bring home? A lot of time away from family !
I’m an old school worm dragger too. .97 purple or black fire tail from Walmart and my $20 Zebco 33 fiberglass combo. It’s a wonder I even stuck a fish but I stuck plenty. I graduated to a $20 pistol grip Lightning Rod and it was on after that. Definitely need to get back to throwing that old school worm again. Thanks Randy!!!

Just about the same for me with the exception that I also had a popper.

Trick worms are one of my favorites. Use it all the time. They bite it for sure.
You have a valid point against live scope but lay off the people. Who eat a few bass every once in a while.

We called those ribbontail worms and the curly tail just had the one curl back there. I remember culprits being around a long time
I'm very grateful for your words of wisdom and actions.

The MANN's "Jelly Worm" was one I started out with. WayneO
Good videos technique. Keeps these up Randy.
This year i had to simplify and just go back to the texas rig soft plastics with a bullet weight. Old faithful
Trick worm works great in shoal systems and heavy current also. I use them a lot on dropshots too.
It’s still my favorite way to bass fish over every other lure out there!
Have done well n the ol monster Black red flake this year

I've had good luck throwing speed worms on weedless under spins as an alternative to a swimbait
I've been slaying on Trout Tickler Tackle's paddle tail worms this year.

Speed worms is a under utilized bait. Have caught many bass with a various number of brands , zoom and bass assassin are my favorites.
The plastic worm, a simple classic.
We used to thread our hooks on the creme worms ! Time consuming * But man caught some good ones ! That was 25-30 years ago!
Are cut-R- tail worms' fish the same way or is this used mainly in open water?.
Ribbon tail
I thought Mr twister made the phenom style worms first?
90% of my fish are caught on the Zoom magnum trick worm or Robo worm. Split shot rigged or Texas rigged depending on the situation.
How about a paddle tail worm?
Always been., always gonna be a worm/lizard fisherman.
Does he ever go fishing anymore he never shows it if Does

Plenty of other TH-cam channels for you to watch if you don’t like this one
