Fritz Kreisler plays Thaïs-Meditation

  • Here is Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) playing an arrangement of the Meditation from Thaïs by Jules Massenet (1842-1912). The piece was originally scored for solo violin and orchestra as part of an entr'acte in the second act of Massenet's 1894 opera Thaïs. Since then, it has been arranged for a variety of instrumentations and ensembles. This recording was made in RCA Victor's studios in Camden, New Jersey in late 1928. Kreisler's usual American accompanist, Carl Lamson, is at the piano.

This is my favorite Violin piece to play of all time. My Mother, on piano, has accompanied me playing "Meditation from Thais" since 1970, while 13 years old at a friends wedding. Even today, at 86 years old and with severe arthritic hands my Mother will somehow manage to play magnificently as I continue to strive to perfect my own violin playing which has become more of a hobby. This will forever be the song that bonds my Mother and I together. My Violin teacher gave me a Fritz Kreisler album as a youngster and I have marveled at his timeless sound that very few violinists have ever reached.

I agree, and everyone loves saying that. The sad truth, however, is that no one is allowed to play freely like this. If they do, then no jobs, no work, no money, no competition victories. People love to talk about it and adore it, but no one is free to play like this without ridicule. More proof of our dystopian society. Play in the most sterile manner whilst heaping praise upon Kreisler. ❤ you, Fritz.

    • @robotnik77

@@mcrettable Since B K did not reply, I am a man approaching my eighties, as well. Execution of the top violinists today is, overall, much better, save for Heifetz, Rabin, Kogan, and very few others, but the poetry is gone, the musical caresses are gone. I'm not speaking of overt emotion - we have plenty of that - but it's is mostly "overcooked", sort of manufactured. It's played by the fingers, but not with the heart. Bruno Walter said of Kreisler at Kreisler's funeral. "He did not play the violin; he became the violin". Kreisler, and many in his generation have been exceeded in technique, but not in poetic feeling. Listen to him, listen to Elman, listen to D. Oistrakh. You may find fault in technique, but not in musicality. You can be transported to another world when they play, a land of fantasy and dreams. The moderns play the notes very well; but they can't take you to Shang-ri-la, Xanadu, nor Lotus Land.

All of us who "attempt" to play the violin should genuflect in respect to this Maestro of the instrument! I tell all of my students to go study his recordings and try to develop a tone as close to his as possible. I had the pleasure of hearing him in person in 1947 in Chicago, and meeting him after the recital. At the age of seven, and after three years of violin study myself, that absolutely blew me away!

@@davidseraphim7402My limited experience (around 1yr.6mo of extensive experimentation): Don't tense or raise either shoulder. Always keep the bow tilted away from oneself. Don't press the resonance out of the sound. Bring the violin (w/o shoulder-rest I suppose) rather more to the right than most people do. MAKE THE VIOLIN SIT IN POSITION AND ANGLE PERFECTLY UNDER THE BOW WHEN THE BOW IS HELD IN THE MOST NATURAL POSITION OF THE RIGHT ARM--in other words, bring the violin to the bow, not the bow to the violin. Keep a flexible wrist. The idea of a "straight bow" is useful, but even more useful is to LISTEN for a pure and clear sound, and do whatever seems to produce it.

What I love about this is the restraint. Often it seems over-blown and over-ripe. It is after all a meditation. When I last tried, that meant being quiet and reflective. It is completely magical how he finds the sweet spot for every note - it all "speaks" with clarity and precision. Remarkable really.

It is nostalgic, lovely but funny at the same time. Contemporary violin players are somewhere else. Technically, emotionally, mentally. You just can't compare it. It is like comparing Mr. Axel Paulsen jumping with one rotation with any contemporary figure skater jumping 3 rotations. Can they learn something from him ? Well, I don't know. Maybe some insignificant details. But this oldschool style will never work again.

I don't know a lot about a lot, but I do know about piano rolls, and if the sheer number of rolls that exist of it are any indication, this Meditation from "Thais" (composed by Jules Massenet, by the way), was one of the classical "warhorses" of its day.
You'd never know it from this performance! Fritz Kreisler plays it like it had never been heard before, with freshness, and most importantly, great warmth and tenderness. It takes a truly great musician to play a famous piece in this manner.

I hardly had time to draw my sword, to grasp my revolver with my left hand and issue a command to my men to hold their bayonets in readiness, when we heard a tramping of horses and saw dark figures swooping down upon us. Kreisler plays an old Gypsy Violin Style and this style has died out in the more modern interpretations of this violin solo from Thais. I think this style marks early virtuoso's of violin fame.I have heard Pablo Sarasate play in this fashion some of his music for violin. I find the style classic and part of the history of the violin instrumental sheet music of the mid nineteenth century. Bottom line, I enjoy this performance.

    ,
Kreislers interpretation is extremely beautiful, without reservation or question,
Josef Hassid's interpretation is extremely beautiful as well as being musically profound. ...
These "simple" pieces are extraordinarily challenging to even the greatest musicians..
