- Fat City-I Guess He's Rather Be In Colorado 1998
Written by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert
This was at a tribute concert to John Denver after his tragic death in 1997
John recorded it in 1970 as did Mary Travers, over the years many people assumed John Denver had written this.
This song was written about Dick Weissman of The Journeymen who produced Bill and Taffy's first album in 1969
In Bill Danoff's Own Words -
I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado was the first song Taffy Nivert and I wrote that was recorded by someone other than ourselves. We did it as a 20-minute exercise in songwriting, just to see if we could. The inspiration for the lyrics was Dick Weissman, a friend and producer of Reincarnation, our first album as Fat City, the name of our duo. Dick was a renowned banjo player with the folk group, The Journeymen.
During this time, I was a Georgetown University student working nights as the lights and soundman at the Cellar Door, a funky little nightclub on M Street in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC. But the Cellar Door was big on the national circuit, along with the Bitter End in New York and San Francisco's Hungry i, for an eclectic lineup of performers including Joni Mitchell, Odetta, comedian Mort Sahl and Thelonius Monk.
In 1966, The Mitchell Trio played at the Cellar Door. Chad Mitchell had just left the Trio and was replaced by a skinny, blond-haired Air Force brat named John Denver. While John did not have Chad's outstanding vocal range, he more than made up for it with an upbeat personality that one day would charm millions of fans from kids to grandmothers.

Taffy's harmony made the song Take Me Home Country Roads. I love Taffy's voice. Bill and Taffy are GREAT together! Note: I was
in the military when John Denver and Fat City were singing in Georgetown and Take Me Home Country Roads hit big, and since I was
from Almost Heaven, West Virginia; that song will always have a place in my heart and memories.
Thank you Bill and Taffy,,,,Fat City (I love that name)....and John Denver R.I.P.
First and foremost, thank you kindly for your service, and thanks for commenting, who knew when we wrote this with Johnny Cash in mind and completely different 2nd verse that John Denver would hear it and like it and let us sing harmony on his albums?
Fate.
so special for a number of reasons, keep coming back to this song, thank you for posting.
You're very welcome
Once, along time ago, I had the chance to spend a couple of my youthful years living in Trinidad. It had to come to an end and I had to leave it broke my heart to do it. I have never returned and will not. But I found this song along time ago on Marys album. I know every word. It a treat to hear the writers do their own song. I think it's the best I've heard.
Thanks for sharing your story, Mary was the first artist to record one of our songs, here's our original 1972 version

Also we have Merle Haggard's cover in full length from the mini series Centennial here on our channel.
@@starlandandmore I do remember that, was living in Trinidad when it was being filmed. Watched it living in Saginaw Michigan. Oh ya, John Denver, sadly I didn't like his version. He had a voice that oozed with enthusiasm, and I don't feel that with this song. Yes there is enthusiasm for Colorado, but not for the place or life he living. I guess I'd rather be in Colorado.
@@user-ho4nw5sf3w John picked Colorado from a handful of our songs and they were recorded for his Poems Aerie,Farewell Andromeda albums, many people believed Colorado was his song, but we'd written it in 1969 about our producer Dick Weissman of the Journeymen who produced our first Fat City album.
@@starlandandmore I have never had the chance to thank very many song writers for there song. And I doubt very many song writers ever know how much a piece of their work benefitted their lives. This is a song I sing to myself a lot. I surely can relate to it. I have and do live a good life, I have always thought the subject of your song did too. It's just in quite moments, that something's you truly want are just out of reach. Thank you for something that has and will continue to entertain me. A unsolicited testimonial to your work.
@@user-ho4nw5sf3w thank you kindly for that.
We really do appreciate hearing from you.
Song writers of some of America's great iconic songs. Thanks Bill and Taffy.
You're Welcome, thank you kindly

Written for Dick Weissman

Just wonderful.
Taffy handled the audience just right
Saw them several times in and around DC. Have their albums and yes, I still play them. They were the best folkies that DC had or ever will have.

Oh damn, that’s so beautiful it’s painful. Love that song.
Dick Weissman of the Journeymen produced our first album in 1969,we wrote this about him
Performed by the composers.
A treat!
Thank you
Hopefully these old hits still get enough airplay that Bill and Taffy get some nice retirement “mad money” to enjoy……….👍
I would think “Country Roads” and “Afternoon Delight” especially still get spun quite a bit……..🤔
We share a 3 way split with Annie every year, can't complain.
@@starlandandmore - Enjoy - well earned……👍🎶❤
