  • Today we'll be replacing the worn out hatch hinges on my 1986 Camaro and Trans Am! Bent hinges will cause hatch misalignment causing the deck lid to stick out past the back of the car. Hawks Motorsports sent me some of their billet aluminum hinges to install on both cars!
    Check them out below and be sure to use code LSXMATT at checkout to save 15% off your hinges and hardware! www.hawksmotor...

    Speaking of mystery water on floor. FYI for Tahoe; This a good one! There is a blank panel under the panel below the wipers on the passenger side. The blank panel covers the fresh air intake for HVAC duct. The sealant that holds it down and seals the opening gets old and hard letting water drip into duct work, drip on fan resister then to floor. So after replacing the fan resister I remove the panel cover then cleaned it. I used that dark gray sealant that is like putty and sticky but never dries up to seal the panel over opening.
    I don't know if this is common on other GM cars etc.

    I used the Hawks hinges on my 88' GTA and they are quality pieces, ironically the finishing touch to get the best alignment was less powerful hatch struts. AMS 4967 were the ones to get the alignment best with the Hawks fiberglass rear spoiler, the struts on there before were too strong and pushed the hatch out a bit. I spent quite a bit of time researching the different pressure struts available and settled on the ones I mentioned.

    I agree. Both the Hood and Rear hatches on fast back models were HEAVY and they always screw out of alignment and bounce around. Not just these, but the Fox Body Mustangs in the GT Hatch could use something like this.

    I've been through 2 rear glasses now using those hinges and bolts. The only advice I can give is to use some loctite on the billet bolts and tighten to where you think it's good and then back off about ⅛ turn. It may not break today or tomorrow but if it gets hot enough, the glass is going to spontaneously shatter. Could be while your driving or even sitting parked. But for the love of God, back those nuts off because they are too tight.

    i messed with my hatch for like... two solid days. Adjusting the hinges... removing the rear hatch wing/panel and moving it up the glass... All of this and the alignment it still not good. At least not as good as either of your cars. I'm sold! Just purchased with LSXMATT code. Thanks for the video.

    Try pulling the plastic cowl that the windshield wipers rest. Is there a well down where the wiper mechanisms move? Look down inside that (may need to clean it out) area and see if any body seam sealant beads appear to be compromised. If need be, run water (hose) into the well and see if you're getting watering leaking into the footwell.

    I agree that Butyl sealant is the best stuff! I never use silicone sealant anymore; it ends up shrinking and not keeping a tight seal.

    there was a pic years ago, like 90s when car magazines is all we had. but there was a pic of a 91/92 z28 pulling a drag car back to the pits. hatch open, kids riding in the back and toe strap wrapped around the aero wing. I remember cringing at that pic so bad even had then. I'd love to find it thou haha.

    Great video as usual. I know I’m a month late, but a source of mysterious water leaks in the front foot wells is failed seam sealer and or rust holes in the cowl where the wiper transmission sits. The whole cowl area sits completely above the interior. GM just globbed tons of seam sealer in there to prevent water ingress to the interior. What a pain in the ass to work on if you need to do repairs in there. Good luck. An easy test is take a bucket of water and pour it directly into your cowl and look for fresh collection of water in the footwells.

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had the dash out and that area was clean. I think I even re did the seam sealer. It’s most likely coming in where the window meets the t top on the corner and dripping down the trim.

    Yeah after comparing what people have said over the years I totally don't think the misalignment is in the panel. It's 100 percent in those hinges bending.

    North Star Cadillac D’elegance has a dual speed dual cooling fan relay setup that works mint with TPI dual fans (the plugs for fans match up as well). Still sbc so I did this with GNX cooling fan switches. I used to have one fan per switch but the inrush load on the alternator to feed the fan motor would almost sniff the engine out. Now I can’t tell when they’re on. The circuit has both fans in series for “low” speed, both fans in parallel for “high”, because them fans are already rolling there is no inrush for high (never had them operate on high, but the car doesn’t get pushed “hard” for long periods).

      I don’t think, I haven’t driven the car much it’s mostly been sitting. They look to be leaking at the window glass so I think a little more adjustment there and they might be ok. Before they use to leak water out the overhead console and by the sun visors.
