    The Beatles’ 1967 hit “Strawberry Fields Forever” has long been considered one of the greatest pop songs ever recorded. Released in February of that year as a double A side single along with Penny Lane, the song peaked at number eight on the US Billboard charts (The Turtles’ “Happy Together” was number one that week). In 2011, Rolling Stone named it the band’s third greatest song and the 76th greatest song ever. Written by John Lennon, it’s a true masterpiece, but what it isn’t is a song about fields full of strawberries.

    John Lennon said to his Aunt Mimi "I want to go play in Strawberry Fields." His Aunt Mimi said "I don't want you going there to play with those orphans." John responded "What are they going to do, hang me for it?" Hence the line "Nothing to get hung about."

      There are two sides to that song. The story of his childhood and the psychedelic perspective of reality itself. “Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about”. If reality is just an illusion then there’s no need to fret over it. It’s part a trippy song, part historical.

      Penny Lane did reach the top of the charts in the US, though. If you stick to official EMI/Parlophone records, it's almost correct. "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me" also failed. And "Come Together/Something". However, All except Strawberry Fields and Please Please Me made it to the top of the US charts.

      ===WHEN AND WHERE STARTED WRITING====
      With nothing on The Beatles agenda for nearly three months, John was persuaded by director Richard Lester to appear in a movie entitled “How I Won The War,” filming commencing on September 6th, 1966
      It was during this time that John began writing “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
      “He used to sit cross-legged on the beach or on the bed,” Crawford continues, “the two places where one would see him with a guitar, and he would go, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever…well, I’m not sure,’ and I’d say, ‘Oh, it’s great, John. Really, it’s good. I wouldn’t mess with it!’ It just sounded so great, and he’s going, ‘I’m not sure…I’m not sure.’”
      “We were in Almeria,” John himself explained in 1980, “and it took me six weeks to write the song. I was writing it all the time I was making the film. (And as anybody knows about film work, there’s a lot of hanging around.) I have an original tape of it somewhere - of how it sounded before it became the psychedelic sounding song it became on record.” An estimation of these “six weeks” indicates that “Strawberry Fields Forever” was mostly written between September 26th and November 6th, which was the final day of filming for the movie.
      The above mentioned tape is a very interesting listen, showing the Genesis of the song as he was writing it. The only verse he had at first, which was repeated many times, consisted of the lyrics “There's no one on my wavelength / I mean, it's either too high or too low / That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right / I mean it's not too bad." The tape then reveals that he obscured the thought slightly by changing “on my wavelength” to “in my tree.”
      ===WANTED TO CALL SONG A DIFF NAME===
      It also appears from listening to this early demo that he may have intended the title of the song to be “It's Not Too Bad” (although this has never been verified). John then plays around with what eventually became the chorus, although “Strawberry Fields” was not mentioned. When the demo shows that he finally does incorporate “Strawberry Fields” into the lyrics, he adds the lyric “nothing to get mad about,” which
      ===SOME SOURCES , NOT LENNON!==== say refers to his Aunt Mimi getting upset about John playing in nearby Strawberry Fields as a child. John reportedly would reply to her, “They can't hang you for it.”
      ===ALLEDGEDLY!!==, remembering this inspired John to change the line to “nothing to get hung about.”
      ===HIS WORDS , QOUTE=====WHAT ITS ABOUT===
      In 1970 he explained: “As an artist, I always, in the most real moments, try to express myself, and to show myself and not somebody else. If I knew myself less I could express it less, that’s all. In ‘Strawberry Fields’ I’m saying, ‘No, always think it’s me,’ and all that bit, and ‘Help!’ I was trying to describe myself, how I felt, but I wasn’t sure how I felt. So I’d be saying, ‘Sometimes, no always, think it’s real but…’ but I’m expressing it haltingly because I’m not sure what I’m feeling. But now I was sure: ‘Yeah, that was what I’m feeling - it hurts, that’s what it’s about.’ So then I could express myself.”

      He continues, “’Strawberry Fields’ was psychoanalysis set to music, really. I think most analysis is just symptomatic, where you just talk about yourself. I don’t need to do that because I’ve done a lot of it with reporters. I never had time for psychiatrists and those people, because they’re all cracked
      ===HIS OWN WORDS , REAL PLACE JUST USED THE NAME=====
      In 1980, he elaborated further: “’Strawberry Fields’ is a real place. It’s a nice name. After I stopped living at Penny Lane, I moved in with my aunt who lived in a nice semi-detached place with a small garden and doctors and lawyers, and all that, all living around. Not the poor, slummy kind of image that was projected in all The Beatles’ stories. Near that home was this Strawberry Fields, a house near a boy’s reformatory where I used to go with my friends Nigel (Whalley) and Pete (Shotton). We would go there and hang out and sell lemonade bottles for a penny. We always had fun at Strawberry Fields, so that’s where I got the name. But I used it as an image. When I was writing ‘In My Life,’ I was trying ‘Penny Lane’ at that time. We were trying to write about Liverpool, and I just listed all the nice-sounding names, just arbitrarily. But, Strawberry Fields, I mean, I have visions of Strawberry Fields…Strawberry Fields is anywhere you want to go.
      ====ITS ABOUT ME
      “It’s just about me really,” John continues, “or anybody else, who’s thinking like that. It’s pretty straightforward. It’s a bit of messing, let’s get away to Strawberry Fields. Certain parts of the song are fantastic to me, especially when you’re doing it, but then after that; you listen to it objectively. ‘Living is easy…misunderstanding all you see.’ It still goes, doesn’t it?
      “The second verse goes, ‘No one I think is in my tree,’ well, I was too shy and too doubting. ‘Nobody seems to be as hip as me,’ is what I was saying. Therefore I must be crazy or a genius! ‘I mean it must be high or low,’ the next line. It was scary as a child, because there was nobody to relate to. Neither my auntie nor my friends nor anybody could ever see what I did.
      Even more succinctly, John stated during another interview: “So the line says, ‘No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.’ What I’m saying, in my insecure way, is ‘Nobody seems to understand where I’m coming from

    Very interesting, mostly Paul's reaction when he first heard it. Like how Paul helped John 'tidy up' one of John's songs from his first proper solo album ("Plastic Ono Band"), Paul really dug John's wild side, and was not really the 'cutesy commercial' one the media made him out to be. (Think of "Back In The USSR" and "Helter Skelter" -- both Paul songs.) From all the books I've read on The Beatles I don't think John ever saw Strawberry Field (the place) as "foreboding", but rather "magical", with maybe a hint of fear at being caught which makes all adventures truly magical. It also came at a time of over a year of regular LSD use by John, and for him it was NOT a Party drug, but a raising of his consciousness. Hence in "A Day In The Life" when he sings: "I'd love to turn, you, on..." he's NOT talking about sex -- he's wanting to wake us all up, as his early 1966 song "Tomorrow Never Knows" is also saying. (And there was "The Word" on Rubber Soul near the end of 1965, and even "There's A Place" on their very first album at the beginning of 1963.

    Woolton isn't a town, it's a district in the city of Liverpool. My inlaws lived in Woolton, not far from George Harrison's parents. My sister in law walked to their house to ask for an autograph in her teens.
    I'm not sure if the Mendips house was actually in Woolton or not. It's on a very busy road, and that is the road where John's mother was killed. He was waving her goodbye as it happened.
    2 years ago we took the magical mystery tour bus in Liverpool as part of my 40th birthday celebrations. Our tour guide was Holly Johnson's younger brother. He had lots of inside knowledge.

      @Kris Nicholson I grew up round there (Garston) and you are correct in that Allerton Gold Course is not quite opposite - but if we carry on like this we will be thought of as obsessives. Up until I left Liverpool in 1978 to go to University I never knew all of the sites of the Beatles Story except Strawberry Fields which I used to bike past to get to my mate's in Gateacre. I went to school with the son of the Rector of St Peter's Woolton not knowing its part of the Beatles Story. Liverpool collectively found tourism in the 1980s from which its does very nicely out of.

Interestingly there are a few theories about the term nothing to get hung about came from! One is that John used to climb over the gates there and hanging was at the time still legal so his Aunt Mimi would warn John of it to put him off entering at least that's one version I've heard?

    Even more telling, and fascinating, the Dakota building, where John lived in New York, is a virtual twin of the original Salvation Army orphanage in Strawberry Field. Did Lennon see it and subconsiously relatie it to his childhood refuge?

    Great visitor centre there now with some great info on Lennon.
    Interestingly one of the young girls that was placed in the orphanage as a toddler, ‘Melvis White’ grew up to be a singer and had performance with the Beatles in the early years.
    She was best pals with Paul’s ex girlfriend Iris, Rory Storms sister.
    There’s some great video footage of her telling some old stories.
    We’ll worth a visit to any Beatles fan, very relaxing and tranquil in the gardens. Helps youngsters with learning difficulties get into the workplace. Fortunately too, the real gates are in the gardens there, with the replicas hanging outside for the bus tourists.

      Kris Nicholson I’m not commenting as if I live a life of Beatles nostalgia. I said something because Strawberry Fields, Woolton, even Aunt Miami’s house are part of my daily life. It seems strange to me for them to be treated as some sort of shrines to someone and his music. It’s where I live. I will be driving into Woolton today to take my dog to the vet. It’s part of my ordinary life and it seems odd to see this video about a, yes derelict site. Have my local shopping area mentioned in revered tones. And a non descriptive semi detached house treated as some sort of monument.
      Did I mention I mention I was driven up Penny Lane to school every day, as a child? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    John Lennon did see things in ways other people didn't see. That's what made him a genius, writing tracks like, Rain, She Said She Said, Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry Fields Forever, co-wrote A Day in the Life, I am the Walrus, Happiness is a warm gun, Come Together. All songs only Lennon could write. Syd Barrett saw things in a different way, but lost his mind, drugs and mental health issues. Arthur Lee from the band Love was another, Captain Beefheart is definitely in there, Trout Mask Replica, Lennon was a fan, obviously, of Beefheart, he loved his first album Safe as Milk. Also the man who produced Trout Mask Replica, Frank Zappa has a different way of looking at life.

    Lennon told Martin that he liked both the "original, lighter" take 7 and "the intense, scored version" from take 26, and wanted to combine the two. Martin had to tell Lennon that the orchestral score was at a faster tempo and in a higher key (B major) than the earlier recording (A major). Lennon assured him: "You can fix it, George." Martin and Emerick carried out the difficult task of joining takes 7 and 26 together. With only a pair of editing scissors, two tape machines and a vari-speed control, Emerick compensated for the differences in key and speed by increasing the speed of the first version and decreasing the speed of the second. He then spliced the versions, starting the orchestral score in the middle of the second chorus. Since take 7 did not include a chorus after the first verse, he also spliced in the first seven words of the second chorus from that take. The pitch-shifting in joining the versions gave Lennon's lead vocal an otherworldly, "swimming" quality.

The finished recording also includes Mellotron flute sounds, a cello and brass arrangement by producer George Martin, and an Indian swarmandal.

    Aunt Mimi did NOT rule John "with an iron fist", she was just a good old fashioned carer/parent putting limits on unruly children as all our parents were back then. Julia was this slightly-crazy Bohemian woman who even admitted that her sister could look after John much better than she could.

    Wow, that explains a lot. I was taken from an Ireland Mothers and Babies home at 4 weeks old and went to Liverpool Orphanage in George street, I was Fostered out, but my Foster died when I was 5 years old, in 1963. U was back in Liverpool Orphanage. I was kicking my football outside the front of the Orphanage one day, and these 4 blokes came along, took my ball and were playing around. After a while, they gave it back to me, and asked, do you know who we are. I said yeah, seen you on tv. So this guy bloke says I'm Paul, that's John, he's George and that there is Ringo who has just joined us. John asked, what's your name? I said Jimmy, it is James really. See ya Jimmy, they walked off. A couple of weeks later John came back to the Orphanage, and he asked for me. I went outside, and it was bloody cold. So John said I have a present for you. He gives a Matchbox toy, a black American Police car. I think it was a Pontiac. So I thank him, and we sit on the curb talking. He was asking lots of questions, and then he had to go. I'll come back Jimmy, promise I will. Aye, John came back to see me but I was fostered out again to a rotten family in London. I was hoping that John wanted to Foster me, it dreamt about living with John for years, that he would find me, take me away from the beatings I got. I have only recently started telling my story as people think you're weird, or a liar. I did tell Theresa McCartney, Paul sister when I sent her a friend request. Don't know if she asked Paul or not.
