Qodosen SR-286 harmonic/mirror frequency flaw

  • I really like this little radio but this radio is flawed, this is a big unacceptable flaw and that’s why it cannot be a substitute for a professional receiver.
Tested on its own internal antenna away from any buildings/wires and also with an external antenna both produced the same results.
Of course this fault could even be that the radio firmware is at fault and there is a mismatch between the actual frequency and the readout? Switching it off and trying after 10 mins found the station gone…….IF problem also?
Still better than a lot of more expensive radios that are full of birdies…..this does not overload on large antennas.

Thanks Matt I have noticed in on my SR-286 on the 120M band, but I hardly ever receive anything on 120M except for WWV 2500 KHZ at night on any of my radios in Tucson, Arizona. It is a shame as some of the tropical music stations used to be on that band, but in my area my nearby MW and FM stations interfere with my radios and I never seriously tried to purchase or built band pass filters for the radios as even on my SDR’s I hardly receive even a carrier of a T.B . Station much like broadcast LW ones.
    73! Have a great day!

I have now taken the time to identify one of the mirrors. I currently receive something on 2485 kHz, which really is 15390 kHz, which is Radio Exterior Espana.

@@s.schl.9370 I have mirror stations also around 2350 which means it runs from around 2.3 -2.6 MHz these mirrors

Yes, but those seem to occur only in range 2.4 - 2.5 Mhz. At least I have not noticed them in other bands yet.

It’s ok for a camping/travel radio which it will be only used for now.

Hehe, I think it's more than okay for this use case :) In the category of small and portable radios operated outside (in a low noise environment) with telesopic whip only, reception of UHF FM broadcast stations is simply unbelievable, probably better than anything else in said category. It picks up stations clearly where other radios just don't receive anything at all. LW and MW reception via telesopic whip requires a very low noise environment, but then performance is also outstanding for a radio this size. SW reception is also very, very good. I think for SW it is very hard to say that one radio is always better than the competition because there will always be cases where a relatively cheap and simple radio will perform surprisingly well. But the SR-286 is one of the top performing radios in this category for SW as well. Negative points are: Ghost stations around 2.4-2.5 Mhz as we already mentioned, FM breaktrough issues, no SSB. I combine the SR-286 with a tiny little Belka DX Max for SSB.

@@s.schl.9370 It is a good radio but hopefully this can be improved on as this is a big oversight in the design. The thing is also this is compared mostly to today’s cheaper made radios. When you really start to test it against older better made radios you see it’s not that mulch better in fact compared to my Sony ICF-2001D FM is the same.

I am very interested in radio comparisons. For instance, I like the comparison videos from André in South Africa that he posts on the channel named SWL. Of course I also do my own comparisons, but currently I only own an Xhdata D-808, a Qodosen SR-286 and a Belka DX Max, so my ability to do comparisons is limited. Would you maybe be interested in doing comparison videos? Like, for instance, compare Qodosen SR-286 and Sony ICF-2001D? To be honest, I personally doubt that the Sony can match the Qodosen in FM. Even Jay Allen says the Qodosen is better in FM than any other portable radio he has tested so far and gave it five and a half stars out of five stars :D (Internet search query: "FM Portables Mega-Shootout 2024"). So I would be very interested how they compare in FM (but also on LW, MW and SW, of course) with internal battery and teleskopic whip outside in low noise environment. But as I have seen in your videos, rf noise is not an issue for you :)

@@s.schl.9370first of all, I believe the 2001D's RF filter on FM is pretty darn wide, maybe about 300 kHz. Typical of the days this radio came around, but too wide now. Any DSP radio is tighter and they really pull in stations. And I have a TEF6686-based receiver (not a Qodosen), and I can confirm that is yet another level up in FM reception :)
