I have no problem paying the bit extra at the markets for the free range eggs. Happy to know this is the chicken lifestyle I agree with and support. Good on you guys! Those are some happy chickens :)

I love this! You are slow and gentle for the birds. Pasture-fed hens produce the best and most delicious eggs! The only ones to buy.

This reminds me of when my family first moved to Idaho. 22 hens came with our house on 2 acres. The best eggs ever!!

I saw a similar thing over 30 years ago. In this case, the guy had the coop up on high wheels with a catwalk for the birds. He was ranging them in his dairy-cow pasture. The cows were strip-grazing the pasture with a hotwire that was moved every day. The hens were placed about 3 days behind the cows. This gave the cow pies a chance to dry some and get full of fly larva. The hens scratched the cow pies to pieces and ate the larva. This also spread the manure and nutrients out and prevented the formation of non-grazed "zones of repugnance" around the pies on the cows' next trip across the pasture. I think this was happening somewhere in the eastern US, Virginia or the like on a farm that had a diverse, high integrated organic operation.

Yeah, it’s a great idea, but nothing new. Even though it seems many think so these days. The method of raising hens in mobile coops has been going on for well over a century.

Since getting hens for ourselves I can't buy regular eggs in the winter. Not only do they not taste like anything, it's just not right. I was glad to see pasture-raised eggs show up in our grocery stores last year. Free-range doesn't mean they live in good conditions, just that they can move around a little bit.

We, the humans of the world were given a gift of Dominion over the plants & animals of this world. With that gift came a responsibility to treat every thing on this planet with dignity & respect. Even if you raise animals for slaughter. you can do it with dignity & respect. God Bless the Good Guys...

Have you guys thought about mechanizing the chicken coup to have it move on its own? You could easily do it with a couple of geared motors, a solar panel, and some electronic brains. It would probably be a big time saver and would continuously creep along, giving your chickens more foraging area per day.
