While there is an emergency release for the rear door under the door insert in the Model Y, it is not as easy to get to and not as straight forward as the front seat door release buttons. Having the door buttons on the rear would likely allow Tesla to have laminated glass in the rear as well. However not sure how that would work with kids... 🤔

I'm a firefighter and I just watched a video of a Tesla that crashed into a pole, it was on fire, and the driver was trapped behind the laminated glass. Scary situation.
The first in crew that responded had a firefighter try to break the glass with a conventional window punch device, that didn't work.
Then he tried smashing it with some forcible entry tools, that didn't work either.
The driver ended up dying. It took 45 mins to extinguish the flames and 15 mins to get the car doors open.
It's 1:32AM and I'm now making it my mission to figure out an effective way to get around this situation if I ever have to pull up to a similar car accident.
    Thanks for sharing this.

I worked at the autoglass place for several years an have seen both. Laminated glass is MUCH easier to crack. We had many customers coming for replacement after a rock bouncing off the other vehicle and asking it to replace it with a tempered version (some trucks had a temporary switch over in certain years). Furthermore, laminated glass has very sharp and dangerous broken pieces, whereas tempered not. If you tint a tempered glass, it holds the broken glass together and prevents it from falling apart..

There is a big problem with putting these laminated glass windows as the front passenger and driver windows. It is nice that someone cant break your window in if they are trying to break into your car, but on the flipside, it is REALLLLYYYY bad if you are having a medical emergency in your car, or car goes in the water, or anything is pressed against the door not allowing you to open it. The window is the prime escape/enter (for EMS, Police, Fire) personnel. Laminated glass removes that which is scary.

Laminated glass is total different. If it is hit with a really hard force that glass turns into flying knives !

I see you guys had lots of fun. Remember though, that the armored glass is not "glass". It is ALON, Aluminum-Oxy (Oxygen)-Nitrate (Nitrogen). It is a composite. Mixed and press molded under high pressure and temperature I think. Then polished a lot to a very smooth surface so ulike glass, it is extremely hydrophobic. Water and dirt will just shed off easily, much better than when using Rain-x on Glass. It is 4x harder than glass equivalent to Sapphire (I think it is).

What I'm curious about is if there is a way to easily exit the car in an event of all electronic & mechanical failure. 2 things:
    1. How would you “emergency release” front doors under water in case the car ends up submerged? The outside pressure prevents door from being opened under water - basic physics that apply to Tesla as well I presume 😀 I can not see how this manual door release solves anythings for cases like that. In fact laminating driver and passenger front side windows prevents them from being easily broken in case of needing to get out if the car is submerged.

Emergency release can (should not) be added to rear doors because of Children opening the doors. Then child safety locks would be mute if you could open the door with an emergency handle. Probably a bad move to introduce laminated glass in front side windows since the higher danger is fire escape in an event of thermal runaway than little bits of tempered glass falling on my face. So now if the doors gets stuck because of body deformation we'll have to climb in the back seat while being burned alive to escape, if that's even possible.

I would be interested to know if there is a difference in thermal insulation, both radiation as well as conduction between the two glass types. Theroretically a Low-E coating (from Low Emissivity), a thin metal or metal oxide layer applied to glass to reduce emissivity, could be applied between the glas panes.

  • @captncloud50

Definitely prefer tempered glass over laminated for side windows. If I ever end up in water I don’t want to have to wait till I sink to the bottom of the lake/ocean to be open the door because I can’t break the window. I’ve seen the mythbusters episode.

We've had a rash of car jackings (over 70 in last 2-3 months) in Minneapolis, in one case they shot at a car window when a woman wouldn't get out quick enough...for some reason 2 of the 3 bullets bounced off, perhaps small pistol? Any thoughts on additional protection that this laminated glass might provide?

Actually it is not safe when the door gets crushed or bent in a certain way that locks it in place. Even regular, mechanical cardoors, cant be opened. For this reason emergency rescuers carries sawing equipment in their cars. Its actually a common occurrence in car accidents. And kicking the window out isnt always feasible, say for example you are in severe shock from an accident or what if your legs even got crushed. You will have to have enough space and energy left to be able to turn your legs up against the windows, which is already hard for me to simulate in a perfect environment without shock or injury 😂 Safetywise, I believe tempered glass is still superior.
Dont worry, I love Tesla, not a hater.
