    I've been growing some avocado trees, and one of them has 4-5 shoots. And I haven't seen any of the shoots die, is that polyembryonic? It also had started with 2 root shoots, and its leaves look similar to the adult tree I had got it from.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael, i'm not aware of any polyembryonic avocado varieties. Sometimes I get multiple shoots but I prune away the smallest ones and leave the dominant one.

    Having lived in Miami for over 80% of my life, I had never eaten Haas Avocado until I moved to North Florida. The avocado we bought in the stores and the ones we harvest from the back yard were always Simmonds, Doni, Choquette and the Hialeah Red. However, the Haas is what I see here in the stores. Though I prefer those avocados I get in South Florida, the Haas is not very far off in quality.

    This might be your best vid. So you're saying the first one to graft must have had a nice pair of avocados. What is the advantage of patenting an avocado when farmers just graft them?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the compliment. The advantage to patenting is to incentivize people to grow new varieties but that takes investment. Plant patents give a person a way to monetize years of investment when they finally hit the jackpot with their new variety. It's risk reward, grow the same old thing everybody is used to or come up with a new variety that takes the market by storm. Maybe a seedless one for example.

    Hello, I could really use your help! Recently my wife lost both her grandparents. They had a beautiful avacado tree in the back yard that my wife had great memories growing up and spending time under it with them. Unfortunately, the property is being sold. I managed to take about eight clippings a month ago and trimmed them down to about 8” and used a rooting powder to help stimulate root growth. All but one of them is starting to sprout tiny leaves. Is there any advice you could give me to try to ensure they survive. My wife and I would love be able to share similar memories with our granddaughters. • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know anything about it. You mentioned it when we spoke on the phone and I looked it up but most of the information requires a PHD to understand, ha! Some of the organic growers near us introduce organisms they believe to be symbiotic to enhance yield or ward off pests. From the one paper I was able to understand it sounds like the fungus amplifies nutrition uptake by allowing the host tree to kind of share it's "root" system. I'm gonna ask around and see what other people know about it.

    thanks for educating me on avocados , I found your channel about a year ago. Turns out we are both in Florida. I'm in central Florida. I had some mango tree's the cold killed them a few years back. But I'm trying them again, My problem is the seeds have black mold on them when I break them open. I germinate them in a damp paper towel and that makes it worse. And you know how humid it is in out great State of Florida. I started Avocados and Mango's at the same time, My avocados are almost a foot tall already. but my Mango's didn't make it from the black mold. I'm starting them again but I need some help controlling the mold. My wife loves them both. I have some good tasting Avocado's seeds but I would like to try some of your's as well the large one. Do you have or can you make a video on fertilizing both. I know from your past video's you like 666. Thanks for the video's

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jerry, try planting the mango seeds directly in potting soil. Don't bother germinating. Leave the husk on and everything. When they start to grow give the a little mist of copper fungicide every 2-3 weeks to keep the fungus at bay. I'm sorry to hear about the ones that died in the cold. I hate losing trees, lost a lot to Irma 3 years ago.
      Thank you for the fertilizer vid idea. I've got a few vids i'm working on right now but I'll add that to my list.

    Your jokes always crack me up. Nice video. :)
    I think the wording of the explanation of grafted plants was the best by you yet. The clipping continues to grow while the rootstock is there just for the root - simple and easy to understand why the resulting plant grows the fruit you want.

      @@SleepyLizard I am glad you see it that way. I've noticed there is a lack of comments talking about the content of videos I watch, so I always try to say something about the things that catch my eye. Be it positive or negative, I feel like such comments are needed to help the creator improve or be assured that what he does is done right.

    What seeds are you using as rootstock for the various grafted avos you sell? Pretty fascinating stuff.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, I like to use the seeds from Lula variety. I also have two Waldin trees and I use those seeds as well, both nice and big.

      @@SleepyLizard Thanks! Another question - when grafting, does the tree take on the cold tolerances of the graft or the rootstock?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesEdington Jim actually both. let's say you have a very cold tolerant rootstock and a cold sensitive graft. The grafted part will not gain cold resistance

      @@SleepyLizard ah, makes sense. They continue to be themselves basically haha. I need to get cold tolerant varieties + ones that can handle the intense Las Vegas sun...I'm probably looking for a unicorn. The few I have I've given some shade to get them surviving the summer. Heat isn't so much a problem, but as soon as the sun hits them when it's hot they seem to get fried.

      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamesEdington yes you have it right. As for your climate, a cold tolerant variety will work as long as you got the budget to irrigate it. Avocados are thirsty and they'll require a lot of watering in Las Vegas.

    Informative and hilarious as always! Quick question for you - I just moved to sunny California and bought myself a couple avocado trees (Reed and Sir Prize). They're both about waist high, and the Reed is starting to flower. I've heard that you should remove flowers the first year so the tree can focus on root development, leading to larger harvests in the future years. What's your take on this?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan, You are correct. We cut the flowers in the early years so the tree can focus the energy on growth instead of fruit production. It's not necessary but if you cut the flowers you'll have a bigger more productive tree by years 5 and 6.
