  • I show how to change the plugs on the N52 engine. 1-5 are pretty straightforward and easy to do. However, plug 6 can be a bear. I show how a 4in extension is your best friend for this plug

Great video. I found that breaking the extensions in the middle before inserting the plug into port #6 . Socket + short extension first, then when that's in the port connect the other short extension and ratchet made it easier to get into/out of #6, but getting the coil back in was a bugger. Thanks for sharing. BTW I did No. 6 first thanks to your heads up!

My X5 came with a BMW Tool Kit with the correct length spark plug socket for the #6 plug.

Thanks for the video. I was searching to see options for #6 since it is the hardest to get to. I was hoping you will show how you put the new one in. On other similar videos, they show removing passenger side cabin filter and other trim to get to the #6 from the top... I am doing this job tomorrow and not sure yet which rout I am taking for #6. I will attempt your (easier) method and if am unable to do it, then removing trims/housing above the #6 will be my alternative option.

No checking and confirming the GAP of the new plugs before installing?

I often watch your videos to get tips on spicific instrutional tips. This one is not your best. Three things on this one i have problems with. 1) the reason i seek your videos is your attention to detail, when re-installing plugs and especially the coil a small amount of lube should be put on the mating surfice. 2) i appreciate your videos and mechanical skills to see craftsman tools in your qualified hands, 3) I was looking this one up because something was blocking #4 coil from lifting out. Your statement of 2-5 are not eventful. That is not correct if # four has to have what i believe the variable timing controller removed. I again appreciate your helpful videos, just needed info on 4# cyl. Thanks Kenneth Martin Star Brake

Can I do this without the tool that measured the torque? I don't have one of those.

I could not pull out the 3 and 4 coil because of the metal canister that touches them.
Do/can you remove that canister to get to those coils? Also, if the coil won't twist and won't come straight out, can it be pried without breaking it? or how would you get it out?

You can gently put a screwdriver or socket extension through the top latch hole of the coil extended and grabbing both sides pull straight up. If you need to pry, put a board of block of wood/rubber to pry against instead of the plastic on the valve cover. It really shouldn't take that much force. Be sure to use some dielectric grease inside the coils on re-installation to prevent difficulty in the future.

Why do you put tape on the socket?

    • @Sluggaboy27

Because the SP 5/8 socket tends to stay with the spark plug when you are done tightening things back down. I did it without the tape and regretted it each time I tighten a new plug down. Trust him on the tape!
