I'm a little older than the newest generation (I'm 27), but I have an enormous appreciation for music like this. At 11 years old, I was glued to my local "oldies" radio station-- Kool 105 in Denver. The beautiful harmony of groups like Simon & Garfunkel, Brothers Four and others were fundamental pieces to my musical experience. Trust me, I'm not the only member of the "new generation" that deeply loves music like this.

The good thing is that, some young people are starting to reject the soul damaging, satanic garbage imposed on them nowadays, and are listening to this kind of real music instead. I find that very encouraging. Play this to your youngsters and see what their reaction is.

Before and during the Beatles era, these guys and Ricky Nelson taught me how to song and appreciate different types of music as a .kittle boy, merely by their recordings and Tv appearances. They once appeared on Ozie and Harriet show...if I hear them on a oldies channel or whatever singing a song I never heard them sing....I immediately know it;s them. Unmistakable sound and blend of voices. Remarkable harmonies and intonation. Total class, and they didn't have to carry weapons to prove a damn thing.

    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand
As morning breaks the heaven on high
I lift my heavy load to the sky
Sun comes down with a burning glow
Mingles my sweat with the earth below
    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand
I see woman on bended knee
    Cutting cane for her family
I see man at the waterside
Casting nets at the surging tide
    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand
I hope the day will never come
When I can't awake to the sound of drum
    Never let me miss carnival
    With calypso songs philosophical
    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand
    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh

Seriously takes me back.. This era we're in now really doesn't cut it, as far as I'm concerned. About the only thing I can say favorable for this cyber-internet era is the added plethora, ease of access, of reading material.. So picked up a new favorite quote this AM (online).. -Kierkegaard: "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." Yea.. .Like we just totally wear out our freedom of speech, right?! It's speech freedom so long as it's speech conformity.

Emily Perlman Hello Emily! It is great to hear from you again. I once worked with a fellow named Roger Kelly who was a UW grad. Roger was a fine banjo player. He told me that The Brothers Four actually began life as The Party Dollars, playing for fraternities and events around the UW campus. Had you ever heard that story? I've not been able to confirm it from any other source.

Emily Perlman Additionally Roger said he was their banjo player during that period.

Cool, Jan!! Wished I could have been there to see him.....I always loved the banjo, and thought about taking it up.....My brother had an instrument in the 60's called a "banjo uke"......Looked like a banjo but tuned like a ukulele. I sold it together with my accordion at that time.....Just wanted to play guitar!!

Emily Perlman I can relate. Check out this link to my friend Rob Bishline playing Joni's "Both Sides Now", on his Madera: th-cam.com/video/Jc-NGIJ-n4w/w-d-xo.html
