A lot of refurbishes “chemically remove” the alloy coating etc. We just used to put them in an incinerator every night, then shot last, then powder coat, then lacquer. A lot of them they WONT tell you that they incinerate the wheel
Exactly, the question everyone is asking. But maybe this was a freebie for youtube exposure. Also they weren't that great, were they? And this must have been their best effort surely? This is why I never trust (most) youtubers.
Caused mainly by water salt damage. Best thing is have a set of beater winter wheels so that the diamond cut rims are out of the harsh salt conditions.
A couple of cons of powder coating... Hard to achieve thin coating layers Will break down if exposed to UV rays Color change difficulties Start up costs are high Difficult to touch up Part has to be grounded in order to powder coat Less control over the speed and amount of powder coating applied Requires baking Less control over smoothness Must be painted electrostatically Requires a powder coating over, spray gun and booth
If you wanted to stand out you should of had them lacquer them in a different colour.after diamond cutting you can use a coloured lacquer to give that colour finish on the faces and doesn’t effect the black.
Just need some centre caps now Jack, miss my MK5 GTI! Another con to diamond cut wheels is you can only get them done a few times before you strip too much of the wheel off.
@@rossb3175 I am very tempted by a short shifter but slightly put off by the idea of having to take off my intake to reach it. It found it a bit of a faff to put on
Itching to get my diamond cut wheels done to but keen to know all the pros n cons like leaving the vehicle or a home mobile repair. Think I’ll do what you did and catch train home
Great content mate ..... I had the same issue with my monzas I ended up powder coating them as I didn't want the white worm coming back, your diamond cut wheels do look mint tho 👍
I have these wheels on my mk6 GTI and was thinking of getting them refurbished, tbf they ain't in bad condition but I'm fussy and want the little scuffs they have removed. Any chance you can say how much you paid or what i would be looking at ruffly to have this done?
Excellent! The diamond cutter is especially satisfying to watch. So, when are you going to swap the rear plastic bumper for a painted one? Maybe a cheeky wrap to prevent breaking the bank?
Hey I know this was 3 years ago, but how much did the full refurb cost you? I’ve owned my MK5 GTI for 4.5 years and also have diamond cut Monza’s in very bad condition and been needing to give them a refurb for a long time. Haven’t bitten the bullet yet!
Rims look mega, Paul and rest of the crew at Just Wheel Repair know their stuff and have the proper kit 👌🏻 My car even gets a second of fame in the vid
I must admit I did enjoy modding my last golf . Felt great once it was done . Still it was a replica and I’m glad I bought the MK5 R32 based on your vlog . Would love to meet you in person sometime mate . My name is Darren . See you in the next vlog .
Look great. I am getting mine refurbed soon (new genre caps arrived yesterday from VW) but I think I’ll go the powder coat route. Liking the black inserts mind, might copy you.
Hey Jack hows it going I am absolutely loving your channel, you have some amazing content. I am trying to make contact with you because its fair to say you definitely have inspired me to buy a mk5 gti, however part of me also wants to buy an ep3 type r, if you ever got hold of one u should do a comparison of both cars as they are both aprox the same price these days, cheers man.
Great video much appreciated. Was looking for an explanation of both techniques for ages as mine go in on Thurs for coating and I'm going for the powder coating as a result of this video because although the diamond cut looks amazing, i do almost 20k miles per year for work and need something long lasting.
Nice video dude. Not a golf owner, but I like those wheels. Funny thing is I don't like Black wheels on cars. To me it either looks boy racer Bor the design gets lots, but the Monza Powder Coated Black looked great. Silver car with those Black wheels would have looked... 🔥..
I owned a 2003 Mk 4 GTI until September 2019: - No air-con - Busted turbo - Rain got in - CD player packed up - Front passenger door deadlocked - Sold it to a shady scruffbag on Facebook for 150 quid - Scruffbag got monged out and binned it in a hedge within 24 hours - Local plod rocks up at 1am wanting to question me - Had to give long statement saying I sold the box of crap the day before - Vowed never to own another Golf
Don't even look that good. Can see deep machine marks in some areas. I am panel beater/painter with over 20yrs experience before anybody trash my comment.

Remember to protect those wheels. Wax, sealant or coating. They look good longer cause you are to keep them clean easier 😊
Seen how far the centre caps are sticking out of the wheel face because they've had that much surface removed
Sooo glad you went with the diamond cut finish. They look fantastic.
looks great! How much did it cost you to get the 4 wheels done?
Exactly, the question everyone is asking. But maybe this was a freebie for youtube exposure. Also they weren't that great, were they? And this must have been their best effort surely?

Matching decent bran tyres sight have helped too
Caused mainly by water salt damage. Best thing is have a set of beater winter wheels so that the diamond cut rims are out of the harsh salt conditions.
Great video jack - how much did the refurb cost?
Charlie Besley that’s what I’m thinking
usually around 50-80 per wheel.
The stock detroits for the mk5 were metallic grey and the stock for mk6 were black.. the mk5 ones are bbs and the 6 ronal if i remember it correctly
A couple of cons of powder coating...

Less control over the speed and amount of powder coating applied

So what's better, paint-spraying and baking them?

Anyone else notice the kerb rash on the edge of the BMW wheel even after refurb. 4:20
Just need some centre caps now Jack, miss my MK5 GTI!

Just popped the new centre caps on this afternoon 😉
@@JackScarlett1 Ah nice! Have you considered putting the shorter throw shifter from an S3 its a fairly cheap, easy performance mod!
@@rossb3175 I am very tempted by a short shifter but slightly put off by the idea of having to take off my intake to reach it. It found it a bit of a faff to put on
Got a Black 07 GTI. Wondering if you have rust on the wheel arches and if so, do you know a decent body shop
Itching to get my diamond cut wheels done to but keen to know all the pros n cons like leaving the vehicle or a home mobile repair. Think I’ll do what you did and catch train home
Upgrade those tyres 🤦🏻♂️ Arrowspeed - ditch finders!
Hahaha yeah was a quick fix for an MOT pass, getting rid ASAP
Monza's with black inserts where factory default when coming in 18''
One more detail, those diamond cut wheel are especially beautiful at night time
Great content mate ..... I had the same issue with my monzas I ended up powder coating them as I didn't want the white worm coming back, your diamond cut wheels do look mint tho 👍
Looking at getting the same done for my gti how much was it
what size wheel nuts did you use ?

Good idea. Painted, but with black area just around the muffler
They'll need doing again in a year or so. Diamond cut wheels are shocking for durability
Only get 130ish miles for £30 petrol on my GTi, is this normal? especially when I drive very economically😂 hardly ever high revs etc
How long did the process take ?
Those actually look amazing. If I brought a hit I’d defo have them done like that on mine
Hey I know this was 3 years ago, but how much did the full refurb cost you? I’ve owned my MK5 GTI for 4.5 years and also have diamond cut Monza’s in very bad condition and been needing to give them a refurb for a long time. Haven’t bitten the bullet yet!
How much did it end up costing lol?
how much is that per corner?
You should get the ECS flush kit for your wheels, it transforms the look of the MK5 in my opinion
An interesting watch. Look after them! I buckled a 19" Santiago on my 3 month old Mk7.5 GTI the other day by hitting a pothole and I'm gutted
Rims look mega, Paul and rest of the crew at Just Wheel Repair know their stuff and have the proper kit 👌🏻 My car even gets a second of fame in the vid
The larger monzas, I think 18" were painted black in the inserts, the 17" were just left plain metal
I've got 18s with grey inserts. The black inserts are off the mk6 and called Monza 2s. Also the ones in the video are 18s
Nice video . How are the wheels holding up now 2 years later ? I'm considering getting my similar wheels done . I've been quoted 650 euro steep enough
Yes , an update is needed please !
I having my 18in monza fone this week €640 for the 4
How long did it take to do
imo monza's look terrible in black, see them quite often too
Hi mate, where did you get new centre caps to fit this wheel? I have same wheels struggling find them.
did you tried search in eBay?
looooove your videos man!!!! looking forward to some more GTI vids. Keep up the good work Jack❤️
First to like .Great vlog .Love seeing the GTI back on the channel .

Thanks my man! Might be taking you up on your offer to help me with a few other modifications in the future if you still fancy it 😉

You should do voice over work. Nice video.
Need some nice and new centre caps now.
First thing I did when I got home 😉
I love those old GTI videos, can't wait your next one Jack! I have a 2012, and thought it would be interesting to compare the mk5 to the mk6
I thought they would have blacked the tyres for the video
How many inches are the wheels?
18s!

Mk 4 is old and not one of VW's proudest moments.
I didn’t understand what he said when he was airing out his fart by fanning his shirt? I heard, “it snuck up on me like a snake”?
Tyres need some megs endurance
Calipers need a respray
Wheels will look better than the car then ......
And so it begins
Gud vid, mine need doing.
Jesus, the state of those wheels almost put me off eating my lunch whilst watching this video.
😂😂😂
Change that bumper!
Nice Vid but I'd have powder coated 😂 still looks good though.
Now get some decent rubber on there - those budgets are a disgrace!
Nice 👍
Glad I watched that , I'd rather paint tbh .
Lot more to refurbish then the wheels 😂😂 was it free or is their a price for all this exciting stuff
Need more mk5 gti videos!!
More coming!
Arrow speed....nope!

those arent monzas. theyre detroits ;)
These alloys look crap on the car..look like dustbin lids
