    Royal portables are some of the easiest machines to type on but the most finicky machines with mechanics in my opinion- especially with ribbons and everything in the mechanisms. I always get my fingers all inky but hey, it’s a good design and it keeps the machines in good working order. I have a QDL that I barely had to do any work on straight from the antique shop to get it typing like a dream. Just like my Royal Companion and Quiet. You make good and helpful videos and I love to see them over and over even though I have watched them hundreds of times over. Keep up your good work!!
    Cheers from Colorado

    I could use a bit of help. I just bought this typewriter at a flea market for $50. Everything works fine except that it's missing the entire back piece that you have where it says quiet de luxe. Is that back part really needed if everything else works seemingly fine? I just wanna know if I wasted $50 on this typewriter or not since I'm new to the game of typewriters.

    Is it the same with all the royal typewriters because I just put an old royal typewriter in layaway at an antique store and I've been stressing about how to put the ink ribbon in. Thank you for this! :)

    Thank you so much for this helpful video! One quick question, because I am genuinely confused. On the plastic-spooled replacement ribbons I've bought, the spools are the other way up (in other words, when black is on top, the side of the spools with the six holes in a kind of daisy pattern (sorry; I don't know the terminology) is on the BOTTOM. And in fact, that seems to be the only way I can get the spools to rest properly in the ribbon cups, so that they're engaging the spindle. But in the video, the spools are the other way up; I actually re-threaded a spool to match the way it's presented here, and the spools wouldn't fit properly in my typewriter this way. Yet it's working that way for you here, and you have pretty much the same machine I do (mine's a 1952 QDL). What am I not understanding? It's driving me bonkers. (I got mine to work fine by just going with it and having the daisy-side on the bottom; I am just trying to get it.) I really appreciate your help!

      Hello, yes solid spools are the way to go, either plastic or vintage metal.
      Most ribbons sold on the internet nowadays use a stupid "universal" core that sucks
      Look for a ribbon with solid spools, generally higher priced
      my solid spooled ribbons are $10 + $7 s/h

    Do you install your own eyelets or buy the ribbon with eyelets already installed? For years I have tried multiple different eyelet tools, all of which get the job done but none of which produce a pristine looking eyelet like you see when taking off an original ribbon with “factory” eyelets still on. One side just looks a little mashed and less than perfect. Again, they get the job done but I’d love to find the holy-grail tool that make the eyelets look factory-installed.

      Those are pre-installed, but I do have the proper tool and eyelets and do sometimes use them for ribbons which mimics oem very well.
      More often I use that eyelet tool for draw bands (see video) they barely are big enough for the draw band, but I make them work

    Does it really matter on which side the full ribbon is located?

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does not matter which side is full, it's just gonna start feeding to empty spool either way

    Ribbon Lift? How about Ribbon Vibrator, proper name for the part.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure why those were ever named vibrator, nomenclature seems wrong for that part
      But I'm not a stickler for using proper nomenclature to begin with, been making my own names up for things my whole life

    Quick question how do you make it so the keys are not rusty anymore like it gets stuck when I try to type a letter and I have this exact same model

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quick question, not a quick answer, is this rust, old oil or debris ? wire brush, stiff brush, degreaser chemicals to start
      Not sure what your particular situation is
