I'll follow this video up with Part II and III covering the software configuration and finally an overall ride experience video after I've clocked up a few 100km on this smart bike. This bike currently retails for US$2899.

    I confess I like it. The benefits of it are pretty innumerable.
    What excites me is the ability to fiddle with your position. If you know a little bit about bike fit you could immerse yourself for hours tinkering with the Allan keys and getting yourself set up spot on.

    • @lechprotean
      @lechprotean 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      this does sound fun, but really you should do it once per season at most. I had a proper bikefitting done and ideally I'd like to reuse that position - it looks like that is not so simple transitioning measurements from a real bike. Still the concept of a whole bike makes sense, just not the price yet - I have enough space for n+1 and ideally I'd have a separate trainer and my bike intact.

    • @kidsafe
      @kidsafe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      BOBonBIKES Design is more than looks. The KICKR Bike and Neo Bike Smart both have chunky top tubes that interfere with some pedaling styles. The KICKR Bike also wobbles during sprints. In this case I’ll take function over form. I knew the Stages Bike would be “the one” since it was unveiled at Eurobike.

      The reason I chose the stages Bike is I want something that is bullet proof, take a beating, and last forever. I'd stages commercial bikes are any indication, and based upon the feel of the bike, I'm confident it will meet my needs. Thing is solid.

    Shane - great review Part I video. I think alot of potential buyers are interested in an in-depth description, review and demonstration video on the various "control modes" that the Stages SB20 bike offers: manual, level, ERG, simulation, etc. Specifically, I'm very interested in the Level Mode function of the Stages bike. There's simply no good information out there on the internet, TH-cam (or Stages website) on how this Level Mode actually works and performs. I have a cycling app that changes levels of resistance with cadence changes. The "levels" on my app are generic: 1 - 20. There is no specific power target. Power is just a result of changing the instructed resistance level with the instructed cadence target. My current bike (Freemotion Tour De France commercial model) does not give me levels, but only gives me gearing options (standard vs. compact front and various 11-speed combo cassettes). This works for what I need, but I like the idea of breaking my gears into equal intensity levels.....say: each change in "levels" = 20 watts. With traditional gears and bikes, changes from one gear to the next gear does not equal the same, equal change in resistance level (given the next higher/lower gear ratio or gear inches). Thanks again - great videos and reviews.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ball is with Stages for now. The firmware is still beta. No gear change customisation or gear view apps are public. When they are released, I’ll keep these videos coming.

    Why does it have batteries for power meter does it not plug into mains?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The location of the (two) meters means it'd be difficult to draw power from the mains. Other smart bikes measure power internally. This also means they'll never give true left/right data either given they're a single point of power measurement.

  • @moogaming281

    So had it confirmed by Stages that the max resistance is 1500W not the 3000W that all websites selling the bike are listing. Whilst I won't be hitting 1500W any time soon, feel this is somewhat misleading and I guess a lot of people have bought based on the mammoth specs! :-(

    • @kidsafe
      @kidsafe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every version of the Vector uses regular pedal wrenches and not hex keys, so that’s not a problem. The only issue I had installing pedals with hex keys is in the 165mm bore. I had to whip out a short neck 6mm hex key, and thankfully the SB20 comes with one anyway.

    Hi Shane, How did you get the Satges bike shipped to you? from Stages HQ in Boulder direct?
    Cos Im based in Singapore and dont know whats the best option to purchase and ship it here. Everywhere seems to have issues shipping overseas.
    I remembered last time when Stages PM just first came out, it was might difficukt to get it shipped with their geo restrictions on shipping givine excuse of lack of coverage for warranty support.

    Shane, I just ordered the bike from USA 😂. Couldnt shake it off my mind. Had to pull the trigger.
    Got a question to ask, can you check the power adapter rating for input power, whether it accepts a variable voltage input, ie 110 - 230V input. And that the wall socket end can be easily changed by getting another generic plug end. Is the socket at the power adapter (for the wire end of the wall plug) universal? Reason I asked is that I bought it from USA and where Im staying, the power source is 230V and using UK/euro pin plug. 🤦🏾‍♂️

    What trainer you tried and found to be most responsive in erg mode? Neo 2T, Kickr2018, H3, or maybe cheaper ones like Direto x, Core, Suito are as much responsive as top tier? What would be best in doing vo2max 40/20 type sprints in erg?

    • @gplama

      Sprints in ERG are never ideal. It’s not made for that. Level or SIM is better.

    • @TheUnrevealer
      @TheUnrevealer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gplama yes, that I understand, but in general, which of those trainers have best response time, does the most expensive ones in this aspect are better than "bang for the buck" ones?.. Still using Elite cubo fluid and it was fine for years, but getting tired of changing turbo tyres on it and wheel slipping on sprints if tyre is not in perfect condition, so planning for direct a drive trainer. Seems waiting for some time was a good idea, as very first iterations of those smart trainers had various problems, which I hope more or less are fixed in 2020...

    • @lechprotean
      @lechprotean 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      well I have the crank Stages powermeter and very happy with both accuracy and battery lifetime - lasts me a season or so, depending on how much active riding I do. So it looks like they reused it almost 1:1 - a safe choice in my view, but definitely a 1.0 of the bike and for the price I'd expect a bit more not just in terms of powermeters.
