  • A number of Black women are suing the makers of hair relaxers, claiming they developed cancer after years of use. Zinhle Essamuah speaks to five women who used chemical hair straighteners for years and said they noticed changes to their hair and health.

Thanks for putting this in the spotlight. It’s not a temporary risk. Once you relax your hair, you have to get a touch up every 4-6 weeks. That’s about 13 applications of those chemicals each year. These companies put all these toxins in black hair care products and it’s time for the United States to start regulating them.

I don’t know if a lot of the comments are from young people who have no clue that in certain industries you are most certainly judged on your appearance. Years ago you had to conform to the white standard of beauty. People will discriminate against you if you don’t fit into their work culture. I didn’t feel comfortable wearing braids in corporate America until right before the pandemic. At that time I was growing out my relaxer. I still remember ignorant comments from folks of a different race. If you think your appearance is not factored into you getting a job or advancing then you are foolish. Yes it’s much better than years ago but let’s not ignore that black women faced a lot of pressure to straighten their hair in order to be accepted in the workplace. Has nothing to do with lack of self love or vanity. Listen and learn. Instead of pre judging, popping off and making false assumptions.

That part! I worked in a legal office as my first big girl job. During my time at this is job is when I started the process of going natural and I stopped straightening my hair as much. I already cut out chemical relaxers years before.
I began wearing a lot of high ponytail puffs. One day I had a white male coworker ask me why I don't wear my hair more like the other black girl in the office. This girl clearly used relaxers and applied heat on her hair daily. And I simply said "bc i dont do that anymore and want to wear my hair like this". He continued to press me about caring more about my physical appearance. I was very young, still a senior and college (he in his 40s) didnt even realize this was literally workplace discrimination.
Mind you I left that job and found out he went on to become the manager of that department. Knowing what he said to me taught that he will DEFINITELY discriminate against black hair when he comes across eligible candidates during that are pursuing a job there. And this was 2015/16!

@@yvonneossei1965 You think the health and well being of a Black woman AS A WHOLE isn't contingent upon having gainful employment? Getting an education? Stop victim blaming. Black women in America are at the mercy of white people who create the work standards and laws! Some of our children aren't being allowed to graduate because of their natural hair. They're being sent home from school. They're having their hair cut off at wrestling matches because it doesn't meet regulation. Many school and work handbooks distinctly restrict our hairstyles. Only recently the armed services began lightening the restrictions on Black hair. It was ILLEGAL in America for BW to have their hair out at one point. We had to cover our heads. The policing of Black people's hair is deeply and systemically rooted. Don't gaslight Black American women. We're trying to enact the Crown Act in every state to fight against hair discrimination. Imagine having to fight to wear the hair that grows from your scalp. How about you go sign the Crown Act petition and tell others, and help make a difference. Because this comment isn't it.

While relaxers are definitely a problem and I haven’t relaxed my hair in 14 years, we also have to understand that there are other risk factors that contribute to cancer and hormone imbalances (hysterectomy) such as obesity, stress, what we eat (seed oils, food chemicals), etc.
I would argue that some of those issues can be even a bigger risk for some people. Obesity puts you at a HUGE risk for cancer, hormonal imbalances, etc.
So as a community, we also have to look at other factors as well. So that’s the tricky part when it comes to causation.

This is going to be skipped over. There's a 4% chance of getting cancer from a relaxer. Relaxers don't contain formaldehyde; keratin treatments do. I hate to be rude but all of those women are obese which translates to having poor diets, lack of physical exercise, and we have to wonder the kind of environment they’re in. I used a hair relaxer once and then I noticed a couple of hairs falling off. I got so scared and stopped using that again. Don't ignore the subtle signs because that could save you in the future. Also, this lawsuit is unprecedented because you have to prove a number of users having the same diagnosis as you and especially if it's FDA approved, I'm sure the manufacturers will use all measures to avoid paying damages

Most women with 3c hair straighten it or wear it in a massive afro or short curls.. I don't see the difference from 4b hair in terms of the look. Texture is just looser. Good hair is healthy hair. @@rondasmith4037 haha😆😆😆... you ain't making NO SENSE.
Sweetie, your response simply shows your ignorance to science, not understanding my comment, and lack of accountability!
Firstly, there is NO ABSOLUTE PROOF that hair relaxers caused their specific cancers. There are TOO MANY causes of cancer out there (environmental factors, biological factors, dietary factors).
ONLY the cancer cells within their body knows how it got there. 💯
ONLY the cancers cells within their body knows for sure, what caused their cancers. 💯
Do you have the ability to talk to cells? What PROOF do you have that hair relaxers caused their specific cancers? Women of other races who don't use hair relaxers ALSO suffer (and die) from the SAME TYPES of cancer these women have.
Secondly, they noticed "changes to their hair and health" and yet, they still continued to use relaxers??? That makes NO SENSE. One woman said her scalp was coming off when she combed her hair, and yet, she continued to use relaxers??? Makes NO SENSE and also shows a LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY on her part.
Thirdly, using hair relaxers was a CHOICE. There are many other options/alternatives out there... hot comb, flat iron, silk press, wigs, going natural.
I empathize with them, but to claim that hair relaxers caused their cancers, there is NO ABSOLUTE PROOF of that! Women of other races who DON'T USE hair relaxers ALSO develop the SAME TYPES of cancer these women have.

Choosing to put a chemical on your body and being mad at the company for making those decisions is just a lack of accountability. They aren’t even factoring in diet and stress that could be contributing to these issues. So many natural black women also have these problems. Women of other ethnicities also have these problems. And don’t use relaxers. And im a black woman who uses relaxers

This comment is awful. Lacks understanding, comprehension, and historical context. If you really are a Black woman still using chemical straighteners, you should check your self and get better informed. Black women have enough to deal with than another Black woman protecting the status quo and capitalism.

These women are older. Wearing and afro to work wouldn't even have been an option in most job industries they wouldn't even let you get the job but relaxing the hair was usually done at age 12 before you could make an informed decision.

'Lack of accountability' has become the most meaningless phrase in existence. Corporations have a LEGAL responsibility to ensure that their products are safe for human usage. But of course people like you love to overlook that.

Oh so companies can put cancer causing chemicals in the products that you use and you're okay with it? Is it a lack of accountability on your part if companies put cancer causing chemicals in foods you eat, lotions you use, etc.? Can companies can do whatever they want? Sounds like an American

Monitor your health. Drink a lot of water and eat healthy. Also avoid certain hair styles like tight ponytails and avoid having braids on too tight

Baby, 30 years ain't that long ago! These women are at least 60 years or older ! I wish people would try to do research and educate themselves more before just being so opinionated! The fact that one lady said she wanted a job should have been enough for you to truly listen! The fact that we hear but don't listen and that we are more critical of each other than other cultures is so disheartening! We are own worst enemy! These women have been through a lot! It took our elders' experiences to still. We were pp 2:55 l j0

@@rondasmith4037 Thirty years is more than enough time for them to have educated themselves and done things differently.
They don't have a monopoly on needing to work either. I've worked for 30 years *with natural hair*. I dare anyone to tell me I didn't look fantastic. I never had a problem. Ever. In fact, my coworkers admired and respected me for being myself. Nor was I a light skin woman with the acceptable form of curly hair. I've never apologized for my blackness.
      Did you? Too bad.

Thankfully, I've always had jobs that let me embrace whatever hair style I liked. Unfortunately, many today are returning to perms and Black hair dye has also been indicated as a possible culprit. I couldn't perm long because I didn't care for the look on me, it was unhealthy for my hair type and it burned! I'm locked now and it's a good solution too.
