To be fair, Kazakhstan already refused recognise Donetsk or Luhansk or to send troops to help Russia back in February, so it's not like Tokayev was a total pushover. But it still took some guts to give an explanation while sitting directly beside Vladimir Putin at SPIEF.

Great video. This is such an interesting story. A fair few countries seem to have decided to sit out the West-Russia recognition battle over Kosovo, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. A lot of countries are uncomfortable with this abuse of traditional norms of self-determination. But the fact that Tokaev spoke out about this so publicly is fascinating.

Not everyone exactly was 100% surprised imo. The fact Tokhayev did not support Russia's invasion officially, nor recognize the breakaway republics, makes this news not a full surprise.
I agree, it's not totally surprising if you know the full background, but I'm still surprised Tokayev said this in front of Putin. It wasn't a necessary comment, and it came 90 minutes into the event. He could have said the same thing in a speech on another day and still gotten the credit for distancing himself from Russia. He didn't have to do this to Putin's face!
Tokayev expressed the opinion of the Kazakh people, otherwise he would be considered a traitor. It simply cannot be other than a nation. But he is strong, and we are happy about this, because we must be prepared for aggression from Putin. Almaty.
There is also another theory: Tokayev brought Chinese message. Probably Xi indirectly said this to Putin via lips of Tokayev. Because Taiwan was mentioned first.
That's possible, but I suspect Kazakhstan is just as worried about being controlled by China as it is being controlled by Russia. But then again, maybe not?
It was clear Tokayev wasn't a Putler lackey from May 2022 Collective Security Treaty Organization (Russian NATO) meeting where he distanced himself from Putler in the group photo and seem displeased. Kazakhstan seems more evolved than Russia so it would make more sense for them to side with the West. Over time we will likely see that transition.
That's a really interesting take. I actually had to cut down my interview with Michael HIlliard from about 15 minutes, and he did say that Kazakhstan wants to have partnerships with as many big powers as possible at the moment - something that's very similar to what you've said. At the moment geography makes them very dependent on Russia, but I'm sure most Kazakhs would like to see that change.

For a while (and especially since Black January), I would have thought Tokayev and his Kazakhstan to be close allies of the Kremlin (which they kind of are). However, this remark about "quasi-state territories" is quite snarky... and a great way of undermining one of Putin's last pro-war narratives! The thing about Russia helping during Bloody January is not quite true. As several news sites and witnesses could attest, Russia did not get involved in battles, but rather defended their own property (Baykonur cosmodrome or oil reserves) while Kazakhstan finished sorting out riots. I imagine this move was twofold: 1) Russia had their military on the border at the time already, and directly getting involved would prompt very angry voices and problems with regards to everything they were doing at the time and 2) They could get folks who don’t read into news too much on their side, saying they “saved Kazakhstan”. Both my grandmothers used the 2nd reason to explain why they supported Russia in the invasion.

I don't doubt at all that the narrative that Russia saved Kazakhstan has been overplayed to Russia's advantage. I also suspect that knowing that Russian-backed CSTO troops had arrived probably discouraged some protesters from continuing (although I'm only speculating). When I first heard this news, I really did suspect that Russian troops would be staying for a long time, so - whatever really happened - I'm very glad this did not turn into an occupation! @@FredoRockwell No worries. CSTO troops weren’t seen outside of vehicles in the city afaik (I do live in Almaty, where the big part of the riot took place). In addition, it’s still not clear what the people who started the riots and tried to stage a coup wanted. “Official” version is that Nazarbayev’s (previous president’s) nephews tried to take over in order to make a regime with tighter ties with Russia, but that’s what the government says. Another thing to mention is that Tokayev recently added in rules limiting presidential power of all presidents starting with him. He has been playing a weird game from January onwards, and it’s VERY hard to say what his endgame is. It’s really hard to not respect the way he is tightrope walking on the international politics, trying to not anger Russia too much, but in full knowledge that if Ukraine offensive is successful, Kazakhstan is next.

Kazakhstan is pivoting towards chineese. His speech was directed to them it seems. He is basically saying that he no longer cares about Russia goals, instead he supports China with regard of Taiwan.
I suspect you're right however I also think Kazakhstan doesn't want to be dependent on China in the same way they have been in Russia. The more powerful friends they have the less they depend on just one of them
I think that's Hilliard's explanation is a bit too forced and imaginative. Why would Putin choose such vulnerable moment to allow Tokayeb to do that? . We are quiet clear that Putin always wants to inspire fear and this situation counterfeits his authority.
I agree with you. What Mike said makes sense, but Tokayev could have said these things in another speech and got just as much geopolitical credit from it. He didn't need to say it in front of Putin, and if it was planned, why wasn't it part of the formal speeches they both gave and instead part of the less structured Q&A session?
I definitely think Kazakhstan should be prepared for a possible invasion, and I'm confident there are powerful people in Moscow who would choose to launch one. What I doubt is that Russia has enough military resources to invade anytime soon. The losses in Ukraine have been devastating.
i think the reason the leader said this is because Russia is slowly losing respect for slow progress in ukraine and international sanctions russia is so humilated at this point, even its own self proclaimed alies do not support them and for the reason lukashenko is still supporting putin, its because he needs putin to stay in power, belarus is sourounded by western allied powers and without russia it is completly doomed

Explaining why Russia decided to invade Ukraine (again), or how many Ukrainian citizens they've killed in the occupied territories would have made the video much too long, and also really rambling and incoherent. I do talk about these issues in some of the other videos I've made so check them out. As for me trying to destabilize the Russian Federation, honestly, I'm just a guy with a small TH-cam channel! You give me way too much credit. I don't have any desire to destabilize the RF, but what I think doesn't really matter. Kazakhstan is pivoting towards chineese. His speech was directed to them it seems. He is basically saying that he no longer cares about Russia goals, instead he supports China with regard of Taiwan.
I suspect you're right however I also think Kazakhstan doesn't want to be dependent on China in the same way they have been in Russia. The more powerful friends they have the less they depend on just one of them

I think that's Hilliard's explanation is a bit too forced and imaginative. Why would Putin choose such vulnerable moment to allow Tokayeb to do that? . We are quiet clear that Putin always wants to inspire fear and this situation counterfeits his authority.
I agree with you. What Mike said makes sense, but Tokayev could have said these things in another speech and got just as much geopolitical credit from it. He didn't need to say it in front of Putin, and if it was planned, why wasn't it part of the formal speeches they both gave and instead part of the less structured Q&A session?

I definitely think Kazakhstan should be prepared for a possible invasion, and I'm confident there are powerful people in Moscow who would choose to launch one. What I doubt is that Russia has enough military resources to invade anytime soon. The losses in Ukraine have been devastating.

Russia is slowly losing respect for slow progress in ukraine and international sanctions
russia is so humilated at this point, even its own self proclaimed alies do not support them
and for the reason lukashenko is still supporting putin, its because he needs putin to stay in power, belarus is sourounded by western allied powers and without russia it is completly doomed

Maybe, but I think the remark itself wasn't planned. It was 90 minutes into the event, not at the start, and Tokayev could have said the same thing in a speech elsewhere and gotten the same geopolitical street cred. He got to score some points with his angry population, let Putin know he is not his fckboi to do what he please - and told Russia not to try their shenanigans in Kazakhstan like they have in Ukraine. They will not be welcomed as heroes there either.

@@thescythian321 This is a video about one narrow issue - Tokayev's remarks at Spief. Explaining why Russia decided to invade Ukraine (again), or how many Ukrainian citizens they've killed in the occupied territories would have made the video much too long, and also really rambling and incoherent. I do talk about these issues in some of the other videos I've made so check them out. As for me trying to destabilize the Russian Federation, honestly, I'm just a guy with a small TH-cam channel! You give me way too much credit. I don't have any desire to destabilize the RF, but what I think doesn't really matter. What matters is that Putin is destabilizing it rapidly and is (very sadly) making the lives of his subjects worse and worse every day. Thanks again for watching!
