Try thinking of setting up the buggy like a touring car. Since carpet off-road doesn’t have any track bumpiness, longer shock travel is not needed. Sometimes using shorter shock lengths with a thicker oil can give you a TC feel. You need just enough damping to prevent chassis slap when coming down from a jump. Also think about rear anti squat and front wing as a method to keep some force on your front wheels for on power steering grip. Rear motor buggies send traction to the rear for low traction tracks. I like seeing your race content, racing on a budget. Hope this helps 😊
Although it can be disappointing at the time there’s always a positive to take or that you’ve learnt something for next time around , I’ve Had some very frustrating race nights or events before. So I usually let the dust settle and then think how I can try make it better and improve. Keep up the racing, besides it being a bit of fun and playing with toy cars it can also be very rewarding when it all goes the right way ;)
That was really cool. You're going about it the right way. Speed funnily enough is the last thing you should be thinking of. Getting the car around the track smoothly and consistently is the way to go, speed comes later as you get better at it. Changing pinions and even spurs is another way of getting more speed out of the car, at least coming out of corners. Awesome to see Kev and Phill looking on.
This is a great series of videos, I’m glad you’re sticking with the cougar for now & making little tweaks instead of changing the car each race. Really interested to see the improvements 👍
You'll have to pop along to the next meet at Herts (HNMC electric) it's a great outdoor astro track and there's usually enough of us vintage racers for two or three heats, 2wd and 4wd.
Hey Gav, those other tyres you showed, I think they were Shumacher Mezos, they are more of an astroturf tyre. Stick withe the Cactus for carpet. You can however run the Cut Staggers at the front on Astro and Carpet. I would say I think your driving looks solid in the corners you are pulling away from the other cars, but your car was probably half the speed on the straight. Love the content bud, keep it up.
Your driving is really impressive considering you’ve barely done any racing before. You could see your car was painfully slow on the straight so hopefully with a bit more power you will be up there fighting for the win 👍🏻
Racing can be very frustrating at times, but also massively rewarding. I race touring cars (FWD) indoors on carpet, and my skill level has improved over the last few months. As for the car, it's always a case of experimenting to see what suits the track and your driving style. Looks like you had fun though, great stuff!!
In the car pics with body off. You had a adapter on the esc. Big big power loss and heat build up . If you must use a adapter get a full metal tabs one with no wire in between.
Looks like you're making good progress. I've not raced since the late 80's, and that wasn't serious!! Things have moved on so much, I'm lost with all the variables now. I'm sure, making so many changes at once would have had something to do with you feeling the track didn't flow with the car. I can't wait to see what happens next. 👍🏻
If the glitchng persists try mounting the receiver with 2 bits of servo / double sided tape with aluminium tape sandwiched in between. The aluminium tape will shield the receiver from the carbon chassis, also mount the ariel vertically with all the wire out, even if it comes out the end of the tube.
Hi Ben, yep it was a laugh. Your Cougar has inspired me as yours is going great guns. I splashed out on a load more upgrades for the next race meeting. I hope this will give me the kind of punch yours was capable of. 👍🏻👍🏻
Really enjoyed this video Gavin ,liked the hop ups and changes at the start and then a bit of racing and see how changes affect car really well put out vid Like these kind of videos 👍 Keep em up
great job Gav! Regardless of where you finished the races there is a clear improvement to your car control and consistency. keep up the steady improvements in your driving and the car setup and you'll be in the A finals in no time.
Cool video. Ur definitely getting better . And i think it would help u if u move a little closer to that tabletop jump so u can see it better. I think the glitch was in ur steering hand. Lol.. just kiding
I bet you're wondering why you never did this sooner? It's good fun and it can be nerve raking on the podium. Try 1/8 buggy outdoors in the summer that's a blast. Good luck for the next run
The car pushes quite a bit. On power spicificly. To counter this try taking a earlier braking point and apex. Go at a lower apex speed and try to accelerate in a straight line. Your already catching on to that strat it looks 😊
@RCKicks you have the NB4 its a far better radio for racing and many of the guys that race at the 5 or so local tracks to me run them with no issues at all they also have responce times to match any of the Sanwa and Futaba radios out there if you try it for racing you wont go back to the radio link ( thats not a bad transmitter just not good for racing ) If you need any help with set up just ask ill be happy to help :)
Great video, as always! Buggy seems to handle very well. The CF chassis looks amazing! I got notification today that my CF chassis and the rear arms are being shipped today. Can't wait for it to arrive. Going to use it for my TOP CAT.
@@RCKickschannel Sounds good! I also ordered two carbon chassis: like I wrote, one for the TC, and the other one for - what I expect will be the next Schumacher rerelease (what do you think will be the next one?) - the Cougar 2. In my Cougar Classic, I installed the full LR Prod Carbone kit, which is very nice as well.
I doubt if the yellow darts would be any faster than the cactus tyres. Darts are designed for max grip on astro. Cactus are THE indoor tyre for buggies.
Please could you share an insight as to what bits you used to mount the “nose” of the bodyshell. Guessing you used a stand off and 2 bolts? But what size stand off? 😊
I don't know why you call yourself a bad driver. Your good! The main thing is your consistently not hitting the barriers 😊. You haven't got much racing experience but it looks like you do. If I was you I'd blame the car for not coming 1st in the a final haha
Awesome video. I see you changed battery for a lower capability. In stock and higher wind motors going to a smaller battery reduces your punch. The problem is that the voltage in the battery drops off quickly where as a high capacity battery keeps a higher voltage. Also the less weight actually works against you. In the old days of nicads and brushed motors every gram of weight was important. Today with brushless motors and lipos you have plenty of torque so more weight gives you a better handling car.
My other Lipo batteries are 100c and this new racing pack is 120c. On this indoor track, grip is not an issue at all. That could be different once I add more power but another Cougar runner has 10.5t and he wants to go down to 8.5 as he’s having no issues dealing with the power in this track so the chassis can take it.
Changed pinion before you got there. Don't do that ;) Glitching? Welcome to elecs directly mounted on carbon chassis plates. Elecs are better but some issues still remain today. -U10
You realize that this Cat is now actually a historically significant piece of R/C car history. People are going to want Re-Re's of this buggy with all the same mods
Find out what gearing that cougars has then go up 1-3 teeth on ur pinion gear. and either take the weight off the front or keep it and add half of whatever the front amount is to the back of the car. Cool video. Cant wait to see the next run of the car after u have finished witg this round of mods. But Practice makes perfect.
@@RCKickschannel wish are club did, a lot stick to 10.5 and blinky indoors. Wow - how many times did that ProCat cut the track after crashing?!!! Anyway - be very careful with the 10.5. I had a 9.5 and it wheelies too much… not necessarily on the straight but when coming out of a corner… when still trying to turn. I went to a 13.5 but just ran a smaller spur and larger pinion (30t I think)

I thought your car looked very good in the tight sections of the track. You' driving is improving. I noticed your glitching problems took place near the stage where everyone is pitting. You should always have fresh batteries in your transmitter. But, your signal could be blocked my radios left on the pits or something else in the pit area.
I understand wanting to loose weight to go faster but low down weight can be useful for the buggies handling and with modern lipo power making the minimum weight is not so much of an issue. Even though you have slimmer and lighter LIPO's I would experiment with some under lipo weights which can help if the car has a tendancy to flip over.
100% The track currently is not producing any grip roll even with the loss in weight and new tyres. I think when the track surface is replaced at some point, it could become an issue. I also have a load that f grams stuffed into the nose currently. After the ESC and motor upgrade, I will have to evaluate how the car responds to more KV
