How to Treat Generalized Skin Infections on Cats

  • Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to my Channel! In this video I am sharing a case on skin allergies in cats and demonstrating a treatment plan used commonly on cats. This video has very graphic footage of a black cat named Luna who has a severe Generalized Skin Infection, skin allergies due to Flea Allergy Dermatitis, and Feline Herpes Virus causing eye conjunctivitis and even loss of her left eye. Feline Herpes Virus in cats is extremely common with about 98% of cats carrying the virus. Feline Herpes Virus is not contagious to humans. The treatment plan for Luna consisted of a long acting injection antibiotic, Zymox Hydrocortisone spray to alleviated itchiness and skin inflammation, and antiviral eye drops to treat Feline Herpes Virus. An anti parasite flea topical product is also always mandatory in cats with obvious flea infestations. Luna was such a sweet cat and so cooperative for this video and we both hope you enjoyed it! Please share this video and let your friends know about my channel if you're liking it! Thank you again, Dr. Lindsay Butzer.

Thank you for helping her! This Luna reminds me of my precious baby. When i got her at the shelter she had so many issues like herpes in her eyes, FIV, and cuts/scratches all over from living on the streets here in Chicago. She was so aggressive with *all the staff & other cats/animals* in this "no-kill shelter" that they were going to send her somewhere else to be euthanized (prevent spread of FIV on streets & shelters thru aggressive behavior). Somehow by the luck of the Irish 🍀 i randomly came in after a horrible failed engagement 💔 with newborn that wasn't mine after spending the last 9 months sober working 12hr days 6 days a week. I was at wits end and ready to give up on life. I specifically asked for one that had as many problems as me so that we could maybe help each other out a lil. So they led me to a small room away from everyone/everything else and warned me before i went in that she might bite or scratch me. But instead when i went in, we locked eyes and she just sat there. So i slowly approached her and held my hand out for her. She started purring and rubbing her head on my hand. The staff member said "dude... What the f***..?" I was a lil curious why they were so convinced she was so mean. They told me her horrible sad background story. Even though i worked alot, i also spent alot of time on the street and been thru alot, and i think we just vibed. So i took her home and after a s*** ton of expensive 🫰 treatments and love 'n' care she's just been the love of my life. When im not working she latches on to me like my shadow and vice versa. She even blocks the door and unties my boots as i try to lace them to go to work, which melts me and occasionally makes me late. One time in the middle of the night i couldn't sleep and she saw a tear running down my face so she literally wiped the tear from my face with her tiny lil paw. She's the best thing that ever happened in this world🤌. The first year or so she was still very very aggressive to anyone else that came to my apartment but now she is just a total sweetheart but a lil shy around strangers.
Anyways thanks for helping these cats that some people rather give up on. 👌

my cat, an abandoned stray, cruised the neighborhood at our apt. complex looking for a home. SO sweet and loving too, but also timid of strangers. He'd been abandoned, hurt, lived out on his own for two years - and never stopped being a lover. He chose me and saved my life. Luna deserves someone good and stable who won't abandon her. Come to think on it, I've never met an ill tempered black cat. My boy is old now - a black and brown tabby. These sweet souls deserve a happy home and loving care. Bless this vet!

We tried to treat it at home (before we knew what it was) with washing and anti-bacterial spray, but it didn't happen. We finally took her in to our vet and it was diagnosed as fungus (ringworm). So, now we'll be shampooing the regions and applying a spray. Here's hoping this will work. Thanks again.

My hair thickness was very lower as compared to previous year due to smoothening. To regain back my hair I started using Cocoonion anti hair fall kit by littleeextra and it was successful in boosting hair density and hair growth. I would advise if you apply it then always wash your hair by mixing shampoo with some water before using as it performs much better in that way. Also when you apply oil then warm it a little and then massage on scalp. Apply it a minimum of once a week. Use neem wood comb while combing your hair and use silicon scalp massager while hair cleansing to get clean dirt, sebum etc and it gives even improved results.

But it doesn't say how often to do apply the spray. Recommendations? (I'm just a colony caretaker in the city, and there is little help available to strays where I'm at, I managed to get my colony spayed, neutered, and vaccinations, however after care is pretty much on me lately because the organization i previously worked with disappeared more or less :/ )

I have stray with dermatitis that is getting painful. I know its a contradiction but she was a stray and I didn't have a cat mainly because I couldn't afford one. Anyway she didn't care and moved in anyways. So I did get her to one of those programs to get her a checkup and spayed. She has been pretty healthy until now she seems to have like this cornmeal dermatitis and he back and now around her neck and more.
I guess I was wondering if I could get those anibotics and the hydrocortizone spray to administer myself?

That's when my cats issues started too. I used advantage 2. Then they both started getting what looks like allergic reaction. I thought it was flea dermatitis. So did a second treatment 4 weeks later . Now it's the same so I'm worried it's the flea meds. I guess off to the vet we go. Hope ur baby is doing better.

So in 4 weeks, if returned to previous environment, would she return back to the same condition if not given fortnightly antibiotics and other treatments you performed today?

Hello Doctor! Please notice me. I have a kitten named Inari. I got her on the streets when she can barely walk; she was so small. Now she's 1 month plus old and she is suffering from military dermatitis I think, and it's so bad that her head and neck is full of scabs and crusts. I made a DIY cone for her not to scratch it using paper plates. I also clean it every day and dab it with coconut oil. Please help me, for I am just a student and cannot afford to take her in the vet.

What did you mean by you knew she was a stray due to her ear notch? Also, you should do update videos or postings to Instagram of the animals that you treat in these videos!

Ear notches are universally recognized as stray cats here in the states. Because the feral cat programs catch strays, then vets have the ears notched while the animal is undergoing surgery for spay/neuter. This way vets and feral cat program staff will know the cat is stray already been trapped to be spayed/neutered. People that monitor the feral colonies don't have to re-trap that cat then, and can focus on trying to get any more that enter the colony that aren't already notched. The spay/neutering will bring down the feral colony numbers, and eventually that colony will (in theory) cease to exist as the cats die off from old age or other diseases. But in the meantime at least they aren't contributing offspring to the colonies, which can become a very big problem very fast if they aren't spayed/neutered.

It's called TNR here for feral colony caretakers. Trap, Neuter, and Release, so they know that cat has already been neutered or spayed. I have a formal feral, they took half his ear off.

Questions please. I’m doing research on ringworm on my cat. She’s had it for a few months. I’m treating it with tresaderm a prescribed medication from her vet. I may be touching her ringworm and then touching her in other places and causing more ringworm. I’m very careful. I keep finding new spots. I’ve seen on TH-cam we can treat ourselves with basil to topically and with turmeric. Does anyone know if using these topically on cats are harmful (separately not together )

I need advice, my cat is an indoor cat and somehow fleas got inside onto her and spread between her and our other 2 cats, and I've noticed they scratch so much that they've developed these scabs and especially on their chin, I feel overwhelmed want to help them and I flea comb them and try to bath them as much as possible but it's hard when your cats put up a huge fight with baths.. would this spray help to heal their injuries on them including their chin? I would try to get to a vet but transportation is an issue

My cat Lucy looks exactly like this cat. Her hair is coming out neck, rear legs and above tail, some on her face, I thought it was fleas but I use advantage 2 & flea comb as well as flea bath. Then I thought it may be allergic reaction to food I bought & nope did nothing. Now I guess we are off to our vet. We take care of tons of strays a couple have had watery eye discharge that's almost a brownish color when I clean it. Could it be due to herpes virus. I do what I can but I'm one woman on a budget, me and my 12 yo love cats.

I have a calico female 3 years of age. She has allergies that have her itching, scabbingarpund face, neck, chin and sides of her head behind eyes leading to ears and her poor eyes get infected. This happens often . I've taken her to the vert several times, she's had shots, cortisone, ear drops, eye ointment but nothing seems to get rid of it for more than two weeks max, usually 5-7 days later she is itching and scabbing up again.
I've got her on a fatty acid diet from the vet. A brand they sell. Still showing the same results.
All I want is her to be comfortable and every visit to the vet is almost 300$. To do specific tests to find out what she's allergic to will cost me 1100$ at LSU and I just don't have that. Can anyone share a similar experience or guidance to help me know what to do for my Gretchen? She's such a sweet cat and so kind, it's not fair. I don't know what else to do for her.
She doesn't have fleas. Indoor cat. I comb her daily.
