That "Complete Stone Roses" CD you showed at around 8:30 is an excellent compilation with a lot of non-studio album Singles and B-Sides included on it. It's a good one to 'complete' your Stone Roses collection if you just have their studio albums s/t debut and Second Coming. I've owned it for many years.
Big Star are underrated but grew to gain a cult following over time, and had a huge influence on Matthew Sweet, who I'm also hugh fan of. Unfortunately, recently surviving stroke. Poor guy! On a lighter note, i so wish i could come down to Sound Exchange. Maybe ill plan a trip with a friend.
Hey Brendon - Power Pop is my favorite music sub-genre. Some really good compilations are: - DIY Shake It Up American Power Pop (Rhino) - DIY Teenage Kicks UK Pop 1976-79 (Rhino) - Come On Let’s Go! (Big Beat) - Girls Go Power Pop! (Big Beat) - Rockets of Love! (Big Beat) - Harmony In My Head box set (Cherry Red) - Poptopia! ‘70s ‘80s ‘90s (Rhino) - Yellow Pills Vol. 1-4 (Big Deal) I’d also recommend checking out releases on the Not Lame label. It’s defunct now, but focused on Power Pop. Have a good one!
The Smiths occupy a few genres most notably, post punk, jangle pop as well as proto- Brit Pop their chief competitor being The Cure which was also goth as well.
Go back and get that Teenage Fanclub “Bandwagonesque” (if don’t already have it) ! Great album and very good price. I also prefer the Smiths over the solo material BUT also, I found Morrissey to be a “grower”… so you may find that later on you really start to dig his solo albums and dig deeper. Also, I think the La’s only had one official album. (I always am making “rock lists” and that album is #1 on the “Best Albums by Bands that only had One Album”). Lastly, gotta try Blur out if exploring Brit Pop.
I’m more like Anthony about genres but I will say most of the bands you described are some of my favorites. I love The Smiths & Morrissey. Jellyfish has 2 studio albums that are perfection to me. I love the metal and hard rock but as I get older I appreciate this music more.
I'd start with Big star studio. Posies, Teenage fanclub, echo and the bunnymen. Real estate, Velvet crush. Supergrass, Superdrag. Just a few😂. Huge genre to get into, lots of fun. Pernice brothers you might like too
Loved this episode….big Smiths/Morrissey fan. Noticed when you were checking out Big Star I saw Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I would suggest you check them out if you never have.
Hi Brendon! Did you check out the first three Suede albums? Great mix of Bowie and T Rex. The Posies-Frosting On The Beater is one of the greatest powerpop/jangle albums ever! Funny enough the two main songwriters were also part of the later Big Star incarnation!
I think you held up a Roger Joseph Manning Jr album. He’s from the band Jellyfish (who you did mention) who are gods in the power pop world, even though they did only 2 studio albums. The Johnny Marr albums are great. Personal favorite for me in power pop are The Posies (Frosting on the Beater). The Posies guys performed with a reformed Big Star awhile. Teenage Fanclub are excellent! John Squire (think I got his name right), guitarist from The Stone Roses, recently did an album with Liam Gallagher.
The Big Star documentary is awesome, if you get a chance to check it out. I always considered Petty as "Americana". That sound is often the output of the Rickenbacher (thin) guitar sound i.e. the Byrds, R.E.M., etc... Keep up the great work Brendan! I enjoy your Channel.
Brendon here some UK albums to consider The Verve - Urban Hymns The LA's - The LA's The Jam - Sound Affects OR Snap (compilation) Suede - Beautiful Ones (Best Off) Ian Brown - Works (Best of compilation)
Britpop bands- Shed Seven, Reef, Sleeper, all did some good stuff. Cast as well. James sort of piggy backed on it as well. Seen Shed Seven a couple of times over the years , when I was a student in York.

The Brit pop movement in the 90s was a great time...
Amazing time. Those amazing bands of the 90s often overlooked here in the states.

Thanks for the video Brendon. Lots of fun!!

Smiths compilation Charles Hawtrey on the cover! Hatful of Hollow is a great compilation of the first two albums.
That Johnny marr best stuff is incredible
Dwight Twilley-jungle & The Knack - round trip are both available on CD and a must have for the power pop collection.
I have seen Johnny Marr solo several times. Besides being a great guitarist he is a very good singer.
Go back and get that Teenage Fanclub “Bandwagonesque” (if don’t already have it) ! Great album and very good price.

Shadowland "Beauty of Escaping "
And both Royal Court of China cds are awesome
Children by the Millions Scream for Alex Chilton! Glad you are boarding the juggernaut train!

Best jangle pop band ever is the Sundays. Three amazing albums in the 90s, Harriet Wheeler has an angelic voice. Check out Blind their second album.
Chronic Town was part of DeadLetterOffice by REM on CD only
If you like the Big Star stuff, check out some of the reunion albums, with the guys from the Posies, another Power pop band you should check out.
Loved this episode….big Smiths/Morrissey fan. Noticed when you were checking out Big Star I saw Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I would suggest you check them out if you never have.
Huge fan of Big Star. I also think Chris Bell's solo record is brilliant. I Am The Cosmos is a beautiful and tragic song
Now your speaking my language.

The Las only have one record and its a masterpiece. I think you would really like those early Teenage Fanclub records you thumbed through
Rank- one of the best live albums of altime. Cocteau Twins predated the Smiths, one of the earliest jangle pop bands. Amazing singer.
If you are looking at The Las maybe check out Cast, John Power from The Las, on vocals, they were pretty successful in the UK in the 90s.

You can always hear when Anthony’s in the house.
Soft Boys, The Dbs, Continental Drifters

Waiting for the day Anthony gets you in to Dua Lipa, she's probably my favorite modern pop star.
The Dbs, and the Feelies are also relevant
Also get into Robyn Hitchcock As well as get albums by The Jam
Brendon here some UK albums to consider
The Verve - Urban Hymns
The LA's - The LA's
The Jam - Sound Affects OR Snap (compilation)
Suede - Beautiful Ones (Best Off)
Ian Brown - Works (Best of compilation)
