  • This tutorial covers BBSHD PEEK gear install and what to look for when servicing the BBSHD mid-drive motor for your eBike! This applies to replacing the Nylong gear as well. While this BBSHD has Mr. HV's kit, the disassembly is identical to the stock BBSHD motor. Video sections are down below!
    0:45 Taking off the cranks
    3:40 The motor is taken off ready to be opened
    7:36 The motor opened with steel gear inside
    8:58 Taking off the plate to expose the gear
    12:17 Nylon, PEEK, and Steel gear comparison
    13:49 Applying Mobile 28 grease to the PEEK gear
    15:15 Installing the PEEK gear
    15:41 Installing the plate back on
    17:04 Installing the motor side back together
    25:28 Testing the PEEK gear
    Tools Required:
    - Spanner wrench for the BBSHD
    - Philips screwdriver
    - Crank extractor tool
    - Allen wrenches (3 to 8mm)
    - Mobil 28 grease for the PEEK gear

    Nice video. Open the grease tube next time from the other end then you can just remove and refit the plastic lid. Also Mobil SHC I believe is the updated version of Mobil 28 and much more readily available.

      No need for thermal strip due to open source firmware. There are also rare nonchalant reviews about throttle being smoother with stock controller and open source firmware. The pawls in the freehub doesn't seem to make snapping sound anymore.

      @@uvwuvw-ol3fg Yes just looked it up, very exciting, now i can get my 28a controller to open up to 30a! that 2a increase does matter, my throttle doesn't have any issues, not sure what throttle is being widely used but i only have a thumb throttle. Did you flash the firmware, how easy was it and were you concern about bricking it.

    I bought one of these brown gears and installed it and it's been good. I am just running a off the shelf bbshd with a 52 volt battery. My original nylon gear was perfect condition and that's was after 33000k but I changed it anyways but I did notice that stock nylon gear uses plastic for its top needle bearing and it was wearing.

    Some of the socket screws are stripped - some for the main gear housing, and secondary gear cover. Everythings been working fine since I last opened everything up - but wondering about getting someone to rethread so more than one or 2 bolts hold. Also used 'liquid gasket seal' to replace the torn one.

    I have used Aeroshell 22 grease, the counterpart of Mobil 28, a lot. And it's not at all suited for gear lubrication. It has very low film strength and not so great extreme pressure ability. The incredibly high temperature resistance of these greases is of absolutely no use for this motor. The windings will be burnt way before any decent grease gets to its drop point. but the lack of adhesion to the gears, especially the large steel gear makes it totally unsuitable. Especially considering its astronomic price. What I have found to work extremely well is polyurea grease such as Lucas X-treme Heavy Duty and calcium sulfonate grease such as Lucas Marine. There are obviously other brands selling analogous greases. For extra performance I just add some 1.6 micron PTFE powder.
    Why are you using such a small chainring? I see no reason to have a chainring smaller than 40t as the chainline is very bad due to a lack of offset. Along with a wide range cassette (11-50t) you get up any hill and have great top speed. 11-50t cassettes are available in 9 and 10 speed from china, for 10 speed I would go for the Zrace brand which has hardened sprockets, as regular sprockets will get cold forged by the force of the chain. If you want the chain to last any significant amount of time, you need to wax it with paraffin/WS2/PTFE. it makes a world of a difference. an oiled chain will grind down itself, the cogs and the expensive alloy chainring very quickly. the chainring will end up not releasing the chain due to hooked teeth

    • @SparkyBikes
      @SparkyBikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the info on the grease! I run 36T & 32T on the back for a closer 1:1 gear ratio for this bike. But I do agree on the chain line, I have it set up very close to the other end of the wheel and do have a 42T chainring with a better offset so will be changing that next time I swap the chains.

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SparkyBikes other point concerning the transmission: I actually prefer using the 42t chainring along with an 11-50t cassette, since I'm using larger cogs for a given speed. Larger cogs mean more chain engagement, less tooth damage and chain skipping at low rpm. The freehub body will still take the beating. With 42t-50t front-rear you get amazing hill climbing ability.

    Sir, Thanks for your video, i have some questions concerning bbshd motor:
    1. Which is the most reliable gear to use on that 3 types of gear? And what are the advantages and disadvantages?
    2. How many kilometers before replacing the gear? (nylon/steel gear).

    • @mikethomas6051
      @mikethomas6051 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Treat your bbshd/nylon gear well and it will go for thousands of miles, mine is going like new after 3000 miles, clean and re-grease once a year, don't use any controller over 48/52v, avoid programming it to just run high amp current in all pas settings, don't abuse the throttle and avoid having its starting current set too high and its equivalent pas setting level, chose a chain ring that suits the terrain ( flats 42-46t with some hills, 36t for areas with a lot hills/climbs ). My advice do not use steel gear, they make the worse noise, they damage the rotor shaft, there is a reason other than cost for the nylon gear, vibration reduction, it acts as a fail safe to protect the motor core, helps with temp control. The peek gear looks like a great alternative but it costs like £120 in the UK, triple the cost for a nylon one. I've not tried the peek gear but my nylon gives me a lot of confidence with it, I'm running the full 30amps, use a 42t chain ring, ride every day with it too work and off road at my local trails.
