My own father served in the 3rd Gorkha Rifles and fought in the Kargil War. Grandfather served during the Burmese retreat and great-grandfather saw action in Gallipoli. I believe had the allied troops consisted entirely of Gurkhas, the Dardanelles would have been taken. I myself had poor eyesight and bad molars so couldn't make it through the recruitment process, the recruiter said "if we put a rifle on your hand you'll shoot our own instead of the enemy". In Afghanistan a single Gurkha sentry repulsed an attack of 30 Taliban. In WW2, a position manned by 3 Gurkhas held off against 200 Japanese. Legend has it that during the Anglo Nepal war, an injured Gurkha showed up to the British camp seeking medical help. After he received treatment he asked to be allowed to leave and rejoin the fight. Baffled at his audacity and straightforwardness it is said the Brits actually let him go instead of taking him prisoner. Immediately after the war came to a close and hostilities ceased the Brits were recruiting Gurkhas in droves. That's how the Gurkha regiments started. Whatever followed is history.

@@Ganjaman53what bad as India did to you in the first place? Nepalis come to India for employment, Our government has provided you a visa free entry and exit in India. And nobody is racist or oppressive towards any Nepali in India there maybe few exceptions but not every Indian is the same, We help you in ur bad times. And India is the second most powerful nation in Asia after China for your kind information, We don't even need to fight you if we wanted to cause any harm to ur nation, Gurkhas from Nepal are respected in India for their valour but people like you in Nepal are delusional and just with little assistance from China, You think you can beat India 😂😂😂

@@Ganjaman53 Actually cunning fox, so called Goo-khalis, were the enemy who always under shadow of british supressed and massarced indians, 1805 Massarce in Gahrwal, 1857 Lucknow massarce and 1919 Jallainwala Bagh massarce. Who started first?? Under the Shadow of British empire, so called Goorkhas who were solely hired in large number to supress indian independence movement, thinks themselves as superpower, So Gorkhalis takes pride in oppressing India. You guys were mercenaries along with Balochs, NWEF agency. The nation as Nepa, a fake country built upon destruction of various nationalities, its shameful the founding father of India, had forgotten so called real enemy nearby were Gorkha. During 1947, if India weren't involved in Kashmir, Goa and Hyderabad issues, your whole army would have been punished. God knows, when India will ever know that major enemy of India were so called Goorkhas, which he had been thriving.
Now, lets debunk yout myth, How do your goorkhalis PN Shah got power, by faking his ancestry as been Chittorgarh amd marrying Indian princess. He was the one who brought the Indian men, gurus and muslim men to train and use arms such as cannons to fight. Which power Nepal had fought..... in 18th century, British, no you didnt fight a british you fought a Bengal army within east India company. And where he got weapons to fight, from French east India company. You fought only one war.... All the KIngdoms which were annexxed were small Kingdom of his relatives.
If so called Goorkhalis moved east and west, why didn't they moved south, Why didn't they fought in plains, and always fortified their hill tops areas. IF they have fought Nawab of Bengal or Nawab of Oudh, both were rich in regions and weakening in power. Why they moved to west or eastwards to poor hill Kingdoms, why not they have guts to move downwards. Even in Anglo-Nepal war, they left tarai region to be looted by british and they fought from uphills.
Even in 18th century, on the peak of Gurkhas, will you be able to defeat powerful empire within empire Sikh empire, Maratha empire, Nizam of Hyderabad, Kingdom of travance, Kingdom of Mysore. Remember Both Maratha empire, Sikh empire and Kingdom of Mysore have defeated the British east India company when they were most powerful. JUst fought one war 1814-1816, which results in bad defeat. where as marathas have defeated in First Anglo-maratha war and fought 4 subsequent war.
I hope India soon or realise the true enemy, it was not pakistan nor muslim but it was so called goorkhas who were real enemy behind the shadow and had also grabbed a land terai region from it. India must realise and bring these war criminals so called hidden fox under disguise of lion need to be punished.
You guys India suppressing Indians during british time, enjoyed pension of britishes. You guys were lucky that India were trapped in Religious voilence,

this war ended with the death of bhakti thapa a great hero of nepal the british upon finding him dead with his traditional red scarf on
gathered up his body covered it in red silk and brought it too the enemy camp before giving a 21 gun salute out of respect for the dead and helping the people to build his funeral pyre
bhakti thapa had been killed rushing over the 3rd of 3 wooden ramparts armed with a shotgun and a khukri knife he had pretty much single handledly taken both the forward fortifications and was climbing over the third when he was shot and killed.
the british were so impressed by his bravery that their commanding officer stopped his men from desecrating the body and returned it respectfully too the enemy.
the nepalese government came to peace and decided to join the british military the next day, and from that point onwards the ghurka have been a proud part of the british military.
bhakti thapi deserves his own video.

Great choices of topics lately. American education doesn't really cover Asia so we miss out on formative moments of history. I see a lot of parallels in the successful use of the Kukri knife by the Gurka and the Tomahawk axe made famous by the Algonquin native Americans. It's crazy to think bayonets only recently have been phased out in most military units.

The bravery and fighting ability of the gurkhas were outright lies or exaggerated to make the gurkhas feel special about joining the British army. In reality the English needed cannon fodder soldiers and realized they can get stupid people to join if they convince them that they come from a warrior culture. The gurkhas almost always come from dirt poor communities with no education so they were easier to convince that they were genetically stronger and inherently braver than others in Asia. Plus a lot of British historians admit that the times gurkhas were absolutely humiliated on the battlefield generally got buried throughout history and when they performed well they gave them more praise to inflate their ego's. This divide and conquer method was especially useful in turning different groups of south Asians against each other for the benefit of the colonial masters.

Compared to the Marathas, Sikhs, and Pashtun the Gurkhas wouldn't have stood a chance though especially if it comes down to close quarters hand to hand combat. There actually aren't even that many reliable sources on weather the Gurkhas ever successfully dispatched an enemy with their Khukri's. It's all just exaggerated lore to keep an entire group of people under the yolk of European powers. The best way to victimize someone is to convince them they were never a victim in the first place.

I always laught when people bring up the stories of their ancestors's wars with the British as great acts of "Bravery". For me, it's just great acts of STUPUDITY ! I mean, seriously guys, fighting against the most powerful empire of the time is just sheer madness. Whenever i see these tiny little nations fighting the massive British Empire, one question always pops up in my mind :
"What the hell is going on in their heads ? What makes them believe they can win ? Why can't these countries understand after seeing the fate of all those who tried to resist that what they intend to do is litteraly an impossible task ?"
Especialy small countries like Nepal. What matters most is winning the war. So when a country loses a war, i don't give a sh*t about their "Bravery" or "Valour". All what i understand is you won or you lost. You lost ? Then don't tell me about your glorious and brave resistance, because it simply doesn't interest me. You lost, then that simply means you're a loser. Nothing more, nothing less. I honestly think that the tales of bravery of defeated peoples is just an excuse by the descandants of these people to retain some dignity after their miserable and obvious crushing defeats. And i REALLY think that these people themselves perfectly know that they are speaking crap 'cause they want to find a sense of pride so hard even when there isn't anything to be proud about in defeat...
