- Perhaps. I sometimes think that because we are 'western', developed, and allies of the USA, NATO etc, but away from those northern hemisphere places, someone might hit us with a nuke missile or biological agent as a demonstration of what might happen to our allies.
- Not sure if our allies would respond 'massively' if say Perth or Alice Spring was nuked.
- We do have important US installations here though Pine Gap etc.

This video doesn't mention my home country, Japan, but at that time Japan was at the end of the Showa era, and the economy was booming with the bubble economy. Japan has strengthened its economic advance into Southeast Asia, and was criticized by Japanese leftists as a "second invasion." It was also the time when trade friction with the United States reached its peak, and the Japanese were ridiculed as "economic animals" by the West.
The prime minister of Japan at the time was the conservative Yasuyuki Nakasone. In 1987, he decided to privatize the Japanese National Railways, where the labor union was extremely strong. Nakasone's reforms were successful, as JNR's labor union had caused passenger riots in the 1970s through repeated delays and sabotage, and had been abandoned by most Japanese citizens in the 1980s. However, if that were not the case, we cannot deny the possibility that this would have caused a left-wing rebellion in Japan as well.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, Japanese capital and products swept over Western countries, causing major trade friction. That's because Japan abandoned its pre-World War II military ambitions and focused all its energies on economic development and technological development.
The left wing of Japan was active in the anti-war movement against the Cold War in the United States, but unlike today, many Japanese had no interest in their country's foreign policy or defense policy.
However, among Japanese businessmen, the slogan for energy drinks became popular: "Can you fight 24 hours a day?" And everyone was working like a madman.
Japan today may be less of an international power than it was in the late 1980s. However, I also think that returning to that "era of economic madness" is not necessarily a happy thing for Japanese people.
In 1987, there was no EAS system in Japan. However, in news such as NHK, there was an "extraordinary news" (emergency broadcast chime) that started with a characteristic jingle. The same jingle was used at the outbreak of war between Japan and the United States in 1941 and the death of Emperor Showa in 1989. When the jingle rang, the Japanese felt the same sense of tension that Europeans and Americans feel about EAS.
Even if Japan did not receive any hits. The radiation and nuclear winter would have absolutely devastated it. Crop failure, contaminated water destroying fishing, not to mention there would be almost nobody left it could trade with. And I doubt they had more than say a week of food in reserve. That would have caused massive food riots, and likely a return to warlords before finally most of the population faded away.
Even IF somehow the farmers knew to switch to crops like beets that were better suited to growing in this hellish new world. The citizens of the cities would starve and would flow out to the countryside in desperation. That would lead to destroyed crops. Fights and looting, And the government would not be able to keep things under control. Especially once the military starts to starve themselves.
Basically the entire northern hemisphere in this scenario would be devoid of civilization. There would be no powerhouse economies ready to take over what is left of the world. And even the southern nations would be far too busy trying to survive than make any kind of attempt to capture the ruined north. Likely not for a century.
I do think there is a way it could have been mentioned in this video. Lets say in this 80s scenario. The world economic crisis has badly crippled Japan's export industry. The far right seizes on this opportunity and says Japan should return to being an empire. They seize power and then try to ally with this new Russia but at this point apparently Russia has decided on its own to launch. Leaving Japan on its own. Everyone is too busy to care about this new Japanese Empire but with massive crop failure and a collapsing society. This new Japan was not able to launch any kind of military operations before it fell apart.
Again not trying to be insulting. Japan in the 80s was indeed an economic powerhouse. It is just that in the 80s a nuclear exchange would be so extreme that it not getting any hits would not even matter.
Oh not part of the fictional scenario but Indeed returning to that economic era would be bad for Japan in my opinion. The nation already has a serious problem with people basically living at their jobs. And that has led to the population rapidly getting older. In the long run it means higher taxes and more demand for care for the elderly than what it can provide. Now if that economic event happens while at the same time there is lots of reform to prevent the kinds of issues that cause people to only think about their jobs. That would work. I just don't want to see Japanese culture fade over the decades because its population has declined so much.
@@kes7774 How did they announce serious events like earthquakes and tsunamis? I had read years ago there was a mistake with the processing of fugu and they sounded the alert to warn local residents not to eat it. Did they do the same type of warning in the 80s?

I think you understand the international position of Japan in the 1980s.
At that time, Japan was economically powerful, but the military aspect was too dependent on the United States, so international remarks were low. And in economic negotiations against the United States, Japan had to compromise on disadvantaged demands if the military alliance was taken out.
At that time, conservatives such as the Liberal Democratic Party said, "It would be okay if there was a Japan -US alliance." Conversely, leftists such as the Japanese Socialist Party and the Japanese Communist Party said, "If there is Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, there will be no war." In 1989, the Tokaido Shinkansen dedicated warning system (UrEDAS) was put into practical use, but there was only a function to stop the railway emergency. The committee, which predicts the Tokai earthquake through surveying crustal deformation, began activities in the 1970s. However, the committee only announced the press release on a regular basis and did not have a bulletin like EAS.
For this reason, in Japan in the 1980s, the following two types were used for breaking news and disasters that were announced. A method in which telop subtitles are displayed with different warning sounds for each broadcasting station while playing regular programs. And it is a method of broadcasting extraordinary news by interrupting regular programs.

The video was reported by a private broadcasting station's All Nippon News Network (ANN) about the crash of 123 Japan Airlines flights in 1985. This is an unusual case where telop subtitles and temporary news were used simultaneously. NHK basically used a similar method.
When Emperor Showa died in 1989, a few months ago his vital sign was displayed regularly in subtitles during a television program. I remember it was a very strange situation.
At a private television station, Japan's unique news program called "Wide Show" was involved in real -time reports of incidents, accidents and disasters. If a major incident occurs in Japan, Wide Show enters a special news system. Many reporters went to the scene and continued live broadcasting for hours, so the Japanese were able to watch the situation while watching it.
I have been watching this wide show in the Great Hanshin -Awaji Earthquake in January 1995 and the forced investigation of Aum Shinrikyo in March 1995.

One small problem I've noticed in this video and some of your other videos is that you often say "50 continental states", but we only have 48 continental states. Hawaii is just an island so it's not connected to the continent and Alaska is not touching other US states so it's not considered a continental state.
