Awards are being changed because they’re “not in direct line of sight of den leaders?” Sounds like the den leader needs more training/curriculum should be updated. There’s something super satisfying for a youth to wear a patch with pride, rather than another belt loop. The patch so different, it shows a unique moment of pride for a young scout, not just another piece to add to the collection.
1. beltloops cost more to produce than small patches. Scouting already costs too much. 2. Belt doesn't hold them all. 3. Nobody wants to look at a childs waistline to see awards.... 4. there is NO WAY only 1.5% is accurate. Whittling chit alone would be more than that. Shooting sports, outdoor award, cyber chip, etc are all EASY. Something is wrong with your "hard data"
1. both are around $2 each. 2. Scouts can wear what the scout wants, or none at all. 3. ???. 4. bottom line is most (95-98%) scouts don't earn these as they aren't top of mind. They are still available and now EASIER to earn. And no sewing needed! 23k responses to a scientific survey taken over multiple years vs your opinion. I hope you keep an open mind and see how it rolls out.
and as for earning them, we did a council survey and 100% earned at least ONE of the patches they claim only 1.5% earn. I can't imagine that we are unique. That 1.5% is complete BS and easily debunked simply by the SALES Numbers of the patches according to staff at my nearest National Store. @@evapartments6938

I buy patches all the time. RARELY over a dollar if you are willing to buy 100+. BSA would be buying 100K volumes. @@evapartments6938
