Fun fact about this song: It's even not Babymetal song. This is a cover of a song by a band in where Su-Metal perform before Babymetal, even before Sakura Gakuin: Karen's Girls.
Yui and Moa danced choreographies to this song as an exam for Sakura Gakuin.
She was 10. And, unsurprisingly, cute as a button.
This song is a cover of the song by the group Karen Girls, which Suzuka was part of before founding Sakura Gakuin.
This performance was a dream come true for Yui as she dreamed of being a Karen Girl and idolized Suzuka before Babymetal was formed.

Well…yes, this is not top tier…BUT, as other have noted, this is an enormously important song for the history of BM: one of the first songs featuring SU on vocals (with Karen Girls, when she was…8?) and the one that Moa and Yui used for their audition for Sakura Gakuin. So is the song that,in a way, brought them together. This was still when they sung using a backing track (with Babybones pretending to play the instruments). Honest review, BTW 👍
Su was 10 years old when 'Over The Future' was recorded.
That was around February of 2008.
The anime 'Zettai Karen Children' first aired on April 6th, 2008.
The single was released on June 25th, 2008.
@@davethevalley Well, it was no highlight of Anime Songs. The real essential parts was a special concert, when the group was disbanded because the Series was dropped.
Yui had seen this song so often, but she wanted to speak to the girls and at the same time Kobametal really heard Suzuka for the first time and he was fascinated, because it fit into his Profile what he needed for his Metal Concept. He first needed a very strong but melodic voice.
This was one of the reasons for this concerts publish the talents in the hope that they will be found for other projects.

My favorite group is mamamoo, up with the best of the best for vocal talents and ability to do any genre and all of their songs are good to is it really possible for singers to sing that good live awesome but not all songs are equal. Baby metal is the same, pretty much every song is good and from there songs get better and this is not one of the blow you away songs. But as others noted this is really from pre babymetal days and they were like 10 years old but even at 10, they had songs that blew you away, this is fun, good to include in a performance .
The score is understandable. What some may not of said was this is not a Babymetal show. This was the heavy metal club. In a Sakura Gakuin show. This is a very very early time so it helps to see the growth of the girls in a sort time. They first did this song in 2010 as they had only 2 songs Ilne and Doki Doki morning, this show was 2011 for a pop show.

Good reaction, thanks. This was at Legend D (December 2012, Su-metal's 15th birthday concert). The Kami Band was not there, all instrumentals were track and Babybones were waving guitars and dancing round (remember they were not a real band, they were actors, dancers or staff members on stage for appearance purposes only ... and everybody knew it).
This is a one-off cover of a song by Su's previous group Karen Girl's. Of course it isn't as good as one of their own songs ... but that is not important. What is hugely important is what this song means to BABYMETAL's history and it is possible that without this song they may have never come into existence.
Kobametal first saw Su when she performed this song at the Karen Girl's farewell performance and he was so impressed with her that he had the mad idea of her fronting a metal-JPop fusion band.
Yui was inspired to become an Idol by this song and by Karen Girl's - she was a big fan. Also she had a close relative seriously ill in hospital - she wasn't allowed into the intensive care unit (too young) and had to sit in a waiting room every day - she watched Karen Girl's videos and learned all the dance moves to perform for her relative when they recovered.
At the same farewell concert Koba saw Su's potential Yui was in the audience dancing along. She said to her family that she wanted to be a Karen Girl's member.
Yui and Moa performed an audition video for Sakura Gakuin .... they danced to 'Over The Future'. Su's entrance in this performance was right at the same point in the song where Yui's and Moa's audition tape ended.
This performance on Su's 15th birthday was the moment Yui's dream came true - performing her favourite Karen Girl's song with her Idol and original Karen Girl's member Suzuka Nakamoto.
Your score was much higher than I expected, but it really wasn't an issue - this song and the performance are all about the history and most essentially the beginnings of BABYMETAL.

This song really has to be taken into context (I''m surprised you didn't know actually :P)- and it's a cover - if you heard the original you'd realise what an amazing job they did with this. good reaction but tbh it's not really comparable to their own stuff.

I had never heard this song before, I liked it, I prefer the older BabyMetal stuff, so this was an enjoyable song for me, and I agree it might not be at the level of Road Of Resistance, but still a good one.

This is a one-off performance covering Karen Girls' (Suzuka's former girl group) song. So, the interest in this song may be more about its origin and the back story (with Yui's personal experience and everything) already explained in other comments. It meant a lot for the girls.
The guys in skeleton costumes (babybones) are not a band. They were there pretending to play the instruments because they had no money for an actual band. Whenever you see babybones, the instrumentals are in a backing track. The real band, Kami Band was already in training at that time (late 2012), performing only in a few encores. They replaced the babybones for good in early 2014.

Nice reaction. This song has history for the band and that's what makes it special for the members of Babymetal. And because of how it connected the members together made this performance special and that's it. A good song. yup. Is it as great as their own songs. NO. But it does make me want them to do some more cover tunes. Happily, what we did get was fantastic collaborations instead. Still wouldn't mind some Babymetalized cover tunes. Good score. No need to hammer it in any harder. But I get it. Crazy fans are out there. I think that it was a great score considering their age at the time. Love the fact that they have improved so much since then. For every band there is always room to grow. I think Babymetal even with their inhuman amount of talent still had room to grow like everyone else. I bet if you asked them, they would say the same. Especially since they're so humble and gracious for everything they got. I think Su Moa Yui and now Momoko know how easily this whole project could have gone sideways. The foxhole is deep and full of surprises
Two things always amaze me about early BabyMetal. A: How all three of them were already so confident on stage, remember the choreography moves and sing or even mime, so well. B: How Koba Metal, thought and had the belief that BabyMetal, could progress beyond a sub unit of Sakura Gakuin.
Your score was much better than I expected. For me the way Su appears adds to the strength of this performance. It was not bad if Su did not appear.

Not many people are expecting a cover of an anime theme song to rank up there with a BABYMETAL classic like 'Road of Resistance'. : )
Although it's nice it's as high as it was, your ranking doesn't really matter.
The song is important to the BABYMETAL members themselves.
Su recorded 'Over The Future' in early 2008 as a member of the J-Pop trio Karen Girl's.
They were formed to record theme songs for the anime 'Zettai Karen Children' ('Psychic Squad' in the USA and Canada).
Yui joined Sakura Gakuin in 2010, largely to have the opportunity to perform with two former Karen Girl's members, Suzuka Nakamoto and Ayami Mutō.
Listening to Karen Girl's songs helped her get through a tough time when a close family member was in the hospital with a serious illness.
Yui and Moa danced to this song in their Sakura Gakuin "entrance audition".
For Yui, performing 'Over The Future' with her Idol Su, was like "a dream come true".

You don't have to choose words to evaluate this song. For fans who know more about the history of SU, YUI, and MOA than BABYMETAL, this is a meaningful song sung by the three. Therefore, please rest assured that this is not a stage to watch based on your singing ability or the performance of your backing band.
You have of course listened to most of the Babymetal catalogue by now, and we're sort of scraping the bottom of the barrel. But even then, some of these songs can be appreciated more with a bit of context. Of course, doing that type of research might be outside the scope of your reaction format, but I thought it worth mentioning none the less. I never cared for _Over the Future_ when it was sung by Su in Karen Girl's. It's just a rather average anime opening song. But knowing what it meant to Yui, and having seen Moa and Yui dance to it for their audition video to Sakura Gakuin, I literally start crying every time I watch them perform this with Su. Objectively, it's of course only a decent cover of a mediocre song. Subjectively, it's a tear-jerker 🙂

It's great for historical reasons. Queen Su is basically Yui and Moa's idol.. from the time she was in Karen Girls, before BABYMETAL. So they both just look so happy performing this song together with her
But it does highlight one thing missing from the current touring set list from recent years, that I hope we start to get back to. The way the song starts with just Yui & Moa singing on their own. There's hardly any solo instances for MoiMoi (or MoMoi now?) singing without Queen Su in recent years. I think we can extend out the gig length a bit by bringing back Su solo songs and MoMoi solo songs (Black BABYMETAL!!) again.. now we're back to an official trinity it just makes sense

Wow it's actually way higher than I thought, I thought you would give this a 5.7 or 6.2 maybe but well I'm not a person that deals with score lol but I could see by your reaction you really liked the song. I agree with you, there is songs better than others, I myself like Rondo of Nightmare better than Megitsune lol or Starlight better than Karate but these I consider all great songs still, but I confess I like all BABYMETAL albums the same so maybe I would give all of them a 10 score 😅 or 10 for The Other One album & 9 for the rest.
This show is available on Blu-Ray, I can't believe they supplied you such a bad quality video to watch. I guess the plus is it helps not getting video blocked 🙃

To understand what this one is about one should watch the original first, the audition video second and this one third. Letting you go into this one blind was not the way to do it.
I would have given it a slightly lower score. It's too Jpop. It's interesting as a historical footnote to see their beginnings.

It's "Karen Girl's" (可憐Girl's), not "Karen's Girls" or "Karen Girls", or any other variation.
@rickwagner- considering that's incorrect grammar, I for one am fine with saying girls. But japanese translations and uses of loan words are rarely perfect.
It is a song written as a soundtrack/theme theme for an anime and sung by the first Su-Metal group, Karen's Girl. Adapting a J-Pop song into metal form is not an operation that everyone can enjoy, especially if adapting in this case just means playing the same melody with a distorted guitar, without much effort. The sentimental value is enormous, perhaps I should listen to it with a little distance, as if it wasn't performed by Babymetal.
I find it hard to consider Over the Future as a cover as Su sang on the original song. It feels like a pre-Babymetal song. I always thought they should have put it on a b-side and absorbed it into a part of Babymetals catalouge as a rarity. Maybe they had copyright issues. I think its a strong tune melody wise.
Makes me wonder if they will ever play this song again one day though, and what the occasion would be if they did.
I mean it's a cover because the instruments are completely different than in the original version. The whole genre is different:D
@@Tyyppl The instrumentation is different but it sounds close in every other regard. It's not a radicaly different reworking and both songs have the same energy. It's because of the connection with Su, Moa and especially Yui on a personal level is why i think of it more as a Babymetal song than a cover of someone else's song.

BM early didn't have a lot of songs to perform, so they did a lot of covers on their shows and they played over track

This is the one BabyMetal performance where it is ok to say "This could be in an anime," because it was the theme for the Zettai Karen Children anime. It's no Road of Resistance, for sure. This is more of a cool factor song, due to the historical significance. Fair grade.
Su singing Tamashii No Rufuran at Legend 1997 is also one performance where it's okay to say that since that song is also a song from anime:D

The score makes sense for what it is.
Not even a BM song actually, but something that absolutely doesn't affect the score of this is more the backstory, not even from Su but from Yui. Long story short, Yui had rough patch with family sick and she listened to songs like this, wanting one day to be a Karen Girl. kept her sane during hospital visits, so...some fun backstory to it. But yeah, its very J-pop, innit. So, not something I would listen to, but I appreciate the story behind it overall.
You actually gave this a way higher score than I thought you would give this. It's a amazing piece of babymetal history but as a song it's really nothing special. Only the fact that this song means to so much to the girls elevates it a little in my eyes.
I know I'm a bit late, but it's a bit sad you have to excuse yourself a thousand times for saying that every band has best and worst songs.
Even if BABYMETAL is my favorite band ever I can say for example I don't like that much songs like "Divine Attack", "Karate" or "Meta Taro". I do like those songs, but those are on the bottom for me.

This was a cover of the theme song for Karen Girls the jpop idol group that Suzuka was in before BABYMETAL (they did the music for a Japanese anime series called Karen Girls that played for I believe one season).
Yui loved Karen Girls and especially this song (she said it helped her cope with the illness of a close family member). Being able to perform it with BABYMETAL was a dream come true for her.
Honestly some of the BABYMETAL song/performances that your audience chooses for you to react to baffle me. I knew that this would underwhelm you.

Not a song i have on my playlist, and pretty sure its way down on the list by most Babymetal fans.
Think its sad that you feel you need to be that defancive before you give the score, we dont expect a 9 on this song, im pretty sure most of us BM fans thought you would give lower.

A derp look into Sus past. This was ome of the songs that she sung as psrt of the Karen girls. Anf this was a Song that according to zhe rumours Yui wanted to sing with her.
Hey David! Sorry if I sound too blunt, but it's not the first time that happened, so I feel like I want to say this.
You spent more time explaining that not every song of every band has to be good, complaining about bad comments you will get etc, rather than talking about the song itself.
Mentioning once it's fine, spending 1/3 of the reaction only for that, feels a bit of an overkill.
We get it, you said it every single time the score was under 8, it gets quickly old :D

This was a pretty good score, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of any of BABYMETAL's cover versions, with the exception of Tamashii no Rufuran.
It wasn't that I wanted a high score.
