I must say, if I had been wearing pearls, they would have been clutched when you said “better than the original”...GASP!!!! I wanted this so bad when I first heard of it, but it wasn’t released in the US right away...in the meantime, I heard some reviews that made me think I can pass on it. NOW I’m thinking I NEEDS it 😂

Tom I bought this Philtre just after this review one month ago. I think I've almost used 1/2 of the bottle! Even my husband could smell it, came home and said the house smelled powdery. Yeh going crazy spraying this one. Can't get enough. Maybe I'll be buying another bottle in a month 💜

Oh my....... this sounds like big danger. Parfum Initial was an instant love back in the days and I still have it in my collection. Hopefully I will get a chance to smell this soon. Shops are still closed. How about the lavender top note? I am very fond of the idea. Is it perceivable at all? I have to admit I was a bit worried it might resemble Mon Guerlain in that aspect.
I don't smell lavender here, it's way too soft and ambery and fluffy. If it's noticeable on you, it's only gonna be in the opening for a short time.
Dear Thomas,.......Gosh, I am soooo happy that I have watched your video. I absolutely LOVVVEEE the Initial but it is sadly discontinued. Knowing that this is a reminiscent of that flanker makes my heart skip a beat. Will you review more vintage perfumes?They are soul healers. 🥺

Decluttered the original Shalimar EDP a while ago. Purchased this one and I am so in LOVE with this amazing scent. So out of this world GORGEOUS and sensual to me. I have a back up bottle already. I feel happy and heavenly! smelling wearing this, and I respray during the day just to experience the rush of that first spray again and again 🥰 I might order a second back up bottle just because it is beautiful, and I do not want to be without it at any point. Ever.

I love the history of Shalimar, it's been around for such a long time, but still seems to have a place in the market.
Beautiful perfume, fantastic review! SO relieved there is no civet - I can imagine the conversation between poor civet cat and the perfumer, like "Sorry...you want what? from where?" Its a synthetic now (I hope)!
Love the way you've described this Tom. I can't wait to try it. Have Shalimar Souffle Intense and also Shalimar Cologne so this might have to be another purchase because I also adore iris in perfumery.

I am totally allowed to use my music I have permission, but they keep messing with me. I can no longer monetise my videos with that intro so until they get their shit together I have to change it. Thanks for your colorful description of this new version of Shalimar. My experience of earlier forms of this classic is just as you describe -- the struggle with the civet and leather. Those notes become quite fusty on my skin. I am wondering how this might work with just a scant touch up of a one note Iris perfume. Your descriptions are the best.
Thank you for the incredible review! I purchased both the philtre and souffle yesterday because I couldn't decide and now I'm super happy I've purchased both! I can't get enough of the Guerlain powdery decadence. I'll have 12 Guerlain perfumes in my collection once I recieve these. Could easily double that.

Oh my gosh! When you opened saying that its lovely my heart dropped and then that you described Philtre and now I'm trying to imagine it. It sounds very soft and soothing but I wonder if I'll miss the leather and Incense and oppoponax? I've never tried Shalimar parfum Initial but a cloudy, slightly resinous vanilla sounds so beautiful 😍. Thanks Thomas, this was much awaited for me.

Hi Tom, I think Shalimar aka The temple of love was made to reflect the famous love story of Shah Jahan & Mumtaz for whom he built Taj Mahal which is actually her tomb existing till today in India. It's a famous monument for true love even now, cheers, take care.

This one is the first Shalimar I love! Samsara forever though but this one comes close to being a big love!
Oh my gosh! I didn't know about this release and Shalimar is, in vintage form, a fragrance I have worn for years and years and I LOVE initial as well!

ooooooooh i just got it from the post two hours ago :D it smells so goooooood ! this is my first shalimar ! shalimar initial was my favorite but i've ordered a bad batch to someone it had turned into something awful so i'm really happy with this one! the dry down comes quickly but i love it it reminds me a little bit of habanita la cologne! thanks for this review Thomas!!
I find original Shalimar a bit overwhelming. Too much vanilla to my taste, at some point it starts suffocating me. Now we have Shalimar Philtre which is a completely different story. It is breathtaking! Totally different type of vanilla. It reminds me of Mona di Orio's "Vanille". Does anyone feel the same way I wonder?

I'm not a huge fan on the original purely because of those 'vintage' notes you mention, I do like the souffle though and this one sounds like it would be my kind of Shalimar! Think I'm going to have to try this one! 😁

I sent it back. There is something cheap and too sweet about this one. I much prefer the original Shalimar…. I love iris, I did not notice Iris or anything in particular. I can hardly fathom how he feels so strongly about this. Shalimar is so complex and beautiful, the dry down is worth waiting for. This new one was unpleasant on me.

Like your other subscribers Tom, I am refraining my urge to blind buy! I love Shalimar and I love iris. And love your reviews 😍! This sounds like heaven.. the only thing pulling me back a bit is the lavender note. For some reason I strongly dislike the note of synthetic vanillic lavender in Mon Guerlain. Wondering if this is perceivable here?
I certainly don't get much lavender, not enough to mention it as a note. It's citrus and then straight into shalimar fluffy goodness!

I wish this one worked for me as well. I love the evolution of this one but the opening is a big no. I love citrus but the opening smells like chemical cleaning products to me 😢

Are Shalimar and Samsara from house of Guerlain somehow similar to each other??
Hi Andreea. They are both oriental fragrances but do not smell similar at all to my nose. Shalimar smells like bergamot (a citrus), leather and smoky vanilla whereas Samsara (the current version) smells like a bubblegumy synthetic sandalwood with jasmine. I prefer Shalimar by miles, I find the current Samsara a bit screechy, even though if applied sparingly it is lovely. Shalimar is more timeless imo, Samsara hasn't aged particularly well, and this comes from someone who loves old school perfumery. This being said, Shalimar has quite an intense opening and an animalic facet that some people struggle with, so do try both to see where your preference lies :) it does take a few wears to truly appreciate the masterpiece that it is.

I am also into old school/vintage perfumes. *chuckles* Perhaps thats why my curent signature scent is Magie Noir by Lancome😇 I asked about the similarity between Shalimar and Samsara because I know Shalimar, I mean I've smelt it some time ago. But I didnt have the occasion to smell Samsara and right now with the lockdown we face in Germany I wont have the chance to smell it before buying at least a sample. Reading your description I am now really really curious about Samsara because I adore sandalwood in women fragrances❤️ And I totally agree. Whit such timeless perfumes you do need a few times wear in order to really understand the speciality one has.
@@andreeaalexandra4035 Magie Noire is so beautiful, especially the vintage version! I love it as well. Wish those woody green fragrances would make a come back. There are still lots of vintage Samsara bottles being sold for a reasonable price online so if you like the current version chances are you would love the vintage :)
They are nothing alike imo. You said you know Shalimar, so I don’t need to describe it. Samsara is, to my nose, all about jasmine and sandalwood. I’ve never tried the vintage, or the most current. I think the version I had was from around 2012-ish. It’s pretty, but IMO, it just wasn’t very special. It’s definitely worth trying, but I wouldn’t suggest a blind buy.
Samsara is gorgeous! I can’t compare it to Shalimar because unfortunately I have never tried Shalimar. With that being said, I passionately love Samsara and, based on the opinions I have heard, I understand that Shalimar is on another level of classy, timeless and sophistication however, Samsara is very comforting and romantic, very soft and versatile for everyday use and for all ages in my opinion (I first wore it when I was a teenager now I am 41 and planning on wearing it until it’ gets discontinued). It is a little bit powdery due to the sandalwood but it is also relaxing and cozy, I smell a lot of (sweet) rose in it as well, a truly lovely scent if you like ultra feminine fragrances.
