Alan Medina this phrase shows us how lonely the king was. He can't touch, kiss or hug people and that phrase is like hidden hint. I feel so sorry for him, so young and kind.

How true it is today! A man is corrupt but has a silver tongue and he makes millions, while a just man attempts to right the wrongs but is despised because his language is harsh. In God’s judgment, one of these men will truly be justified and many shall gnash their teeth in fear of their own standing.
An average man would respect his fellow man becoz of the latter's wealth, looks & stature, but a wise man would respect his fellow man's wisdom & principle. What a great wisdom & principle king Baldwin IV possesed.
I can't help but wish I have King Baldwin IV's wisdom. That would really make me an extremely wise man & someone who can easily command respect even from people who dislike me.
The best way, then, is to suffer. Because through pain we gain knowledge and wisdom. And just as coarse sandpaper smooths a rock, pain and suffering smoothes out the rough soul and makes it gentle.
These statements were coming from someone who was only in his early or mid-20's. It sounded like it came from someone who was already in his 50's. Such a great wisdom king Baldwin had. Perhaps almost as great a wisdom king Solomon had.

Edward Norton really sold an impactful performance despite his features being masked and having acting constraints. The way he uses his eyes and jerks his head around as he talks makes you forget the mask and see the actor.
Edward Norton was actually casted as "Guy de Lusignon (Gi de Lu-sineon) but after reading the script, he got so fascinated by King Baldwin's character. Thus, requested the producer if can play him instead, and even stressed out that he wouldn't mind if he will wear mask and prosthetics all the time. He even requested not to show his name in the credits since some may doubt that he might use a double. But since his portrayal of that coveted role was indeed remarkable and poignant, his name was included in the video version of the film as a fitting tribute to his astounding rendition of King Baldwin the Fourth. And the rest is history.

I say this is the best scene in this movie. A very meaningful message is contained in this scene.

This scene is much better with the uncut dialogue but the delivery was better in the cut version

Always watch the directors cut
why did they cut it?
