  • Why Olivia Rodrigo's debut single Drivers Licence touched our hearts, blew up, and why it's changing what pop breakup songs can do. (Beyonce, Adele, Taylor Swift: take note) A gem in her album "Sour", Olivia drives us through the messy, contradicting emotions of processing a breakup.
She gives new meaning by grounding in the simple things (driving, street signs) that remind her of her lost lover. Let's dig into the meaning behind the lyrics and music.
00:00 most pop breakup songs are simplified
00:56 what if they captured a breakup's messiness?
    01:36 how the song starts
02:06 it sounds like a breakup feels
03:02 bass signals an emotional outburst
3:31 the chorus lyrics are CLICHE
    4:12 4 emotions in 30 seconds
6:02 lyrics put YOU in the drivers seat
    6:41 the bridge to surrender
    7:35 Olivia shows us we're a mess
lyrics genius lyric genius Olivia Rodrigo drivers license explained from Disney Channel's Bizaardvark or High School Musical: The Musical: The Series maybe about the Joshua Basset relationship. Story behind the song, how it was written, music theory.

That means so much, OOTS! :) Yeah, I found myself crying when I first heard "drivers license" & was like: "what just happened? I'm literally married to the woman of my dreams & haven't had a breakup in like 8 years..." Olivia just really touched something deep in a way most other songs don't, so I made a video to try to explore how.

@@itsdavidmora I'm 57 and Olivia did the same thing for me (made me cry) and I haven't dated in 3 decades! Maybe it's just the permission to feel. She gives us permission to feel those icky hard feelings we buried or ignored...

@@YourLuminousLife wow, beuatiful that we're all being touched by her art. Yes, I really think the rawness of that song gives permission we often never even thought to give ourselves. ❤️

OK we need more videos! I'm sure you are really busy but your videos are great. Watched your one about Johnny Harris and now this one about Olivia, plus your other one about how she wrote her song -- love how you find these patterns that we can learn from, and the way you analyze things so beautifully - Gen Z rawness versus the pulled together Boomer... Plus your camera presence and voice are wonderful.

How your channel or videos didn't blow up yet is beyond my comprehension. Maybe youtube's algorithm really is broken, maybe the masses won't ever focus on anything longer than 5 seconds ever again.
